I was told by an art teacher in 4th grade I had talent but she is the only one who ever said that. My mom laughed at my artwork and I decided at some point that I just wasn’t born with any artistic talent! I have since decided that learning how to do art is like a lot of other things, it takes practice! And while some are a quicker study at art than others, it is the desire to create art that feeds the practice and makes you an artist. So more desire and practice, the better the artist.
You're absolutely right Janet and good on you for leaving all that behind and just doing it because you love it. I left it behind for a lot of years too and only picked it back up this past couple of years so I am definitely still learning as well... And there's so many different styles, there isn't necessarily one shoe fits all!
Absolutely brilliant 💚💚! To be a really good Art teacher I think they need to really separate their own bias from the classroom. Art is Art, there is no "you're good or bad", everyone interprets it differently. Teach, encourage, and let the pupil grow ✌.
Absolutely stunning 😍 and yes art always seemed too boxed in. Although, in high-school I had a fantastic art instructor, who gave us free reign and that's when I felt artsy. 💯❣
Thank you Julia! It's good to know you had a great art teacher who let you play around 🙂 mine was just very old school and I had him all the way through school, so it just skewed my view on art for a while!
OMGeeeee!!! I love this piece. Your freehand whimsical/folk art paintings are absolutely awesome! I, too, had art teachers who continually told me that I was "missing" the mark with my pieces, yet (and get this) they'd put them in the showcases for parent/teacher night. One teacher asked the students to sculpt an ashtray out of clay... mine turned into a snake pit and my teacher said my imagination was "a bit strange" - but again, the piece went into the showcase. Through the years, I received many "critiques" from art teachers that weren't exactly favorable but they only propelled me to pursue my own style. I LOVE your style in furniture art - it is right up my alley! Sending love from the USA.
Hey Gina, it's lovely to hear your story and it's interesting to hear other people's experiences. He must have seen there was something special in you but just didn't fully understand at the time. Thank you so much for the love 🙂❤️
The real teachers will bring out your style not the style they think is the"correct" way to do art. I'm afraid those teachers are rare, I only had 1 in my time at school and with 3 grown children I've only came across 2 truly exceptional teachers 1 being a headmistress. Where as all my children were and are exceptional. If you love something you can developer it but its developing your style not that of an exam sheet. Lovely piece, nice to have a UK artist.
I totally agree with you... All of my art teachers in school were kind of old school and very stuffy. It made art no fun! Glad you have met a couple of great ones though and also nice to see someone from the UK 🙂
Love this! Gorgeous colors. I’m an Art Therapist and have taught art to kids and adults over the years and adults that crush a kid’s creativity drive me crazy! Those teachers should be banned! I really loved the organic quality of the hand painted details-even more than the transfers.
@@jodieflavell Yes. It’s a fascinating field. I got my MA in ‘94 and it’s been the foundation for everything I do. No regrets. I have looked more like an artist than a therapist over the years. I’m dying to try furniture painting! I’ve got great paint, brushes, etc- I just need to get started.
Amy , I still don’t have confidence, I have bought thousands of dollars worth of Dixie belle products and stencils decoupage papers and transfers by I don’t have the confidence to start a piece as I am worried I would ruin it
This is so pretty. Love the colors. I even like the "drips" and I'm not really a fan of that look/style. Also love that you just went for it Jodi on the free hand painting. I would of never done that, I would of practiced first and it turned out so good! And yes I had teachers like that too which is why I would of practiced first, so thanks for the inspiration. I'm old enough to be your mom and I so appreciate your wisdom
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed it. If I were to do that kind of style again I would definitely do a little more planning in terms of placement, but I enjoyed it 🥰
This turned out beautiful 💖 I love the colors you put together on it. Your flowers came together & fit right into the piece beautifully. I love the gracious courage you have in your tutorials & artwork. You’re a true inspiration!
I really love this colors harmony. I wished you showed all the process on the entire furniture for the colors, it s really beautiful! I m not sure how to get this gradiant effect, specially with the purple shades. thanks for sharing your Art and skills, dear🙏🌈🎶🥰
This is so nice. I have done a little of this but have a desire to try and do it a bit more in the near future. I feel I have found my preferred teacher in you and your videos. There are lots of them, but it seems you strike just the right chord in me. I am David in Bemidji, Minnesota. Blessings to you.
Hey David, lovely to meet you and thank you so much! That means a lot to hear 🥰 Definitely give it a try! It was a new look for me..I struggle with symmetry but it's definitely something I want to try again
This is such a gorgeous piece. I’m not skilled enough to do any hand-painted designs (trust me!). Do you think that the combination of transfers and hand-painted designs is necessary to achieve this look? Might one approach the same aesthetic using just transfer? Thanks! Jennifer C.
Hey Jennifer, absolutely! Had there not been any extra panels I think I would have just kept it at the transfer, but there was a lot of space to fill. It's called Latin Floral and it definitely has a folksy vibe

I absolutely agree! I think hopefully things are changing now and people are much more open minded then when I was at school! ❤️

I love the idea of the paint spray. I'd never have thought to use it In that way. Bloody brilliant 😊

Love it, yes I had a art teacher who diminished my confidence by telling me how bad I was at art
That's so sad.. I was in the exact same boat. I hope you don't feel the same way now? ❤️

I love this piece! Yes, I was told that I had good design ideas, in school, but that my execution lacked quite a bit. 😁 Working on that.

Thank you Virginie 🙂 The purple shades were created by the Plum Crazy Spray. As it was diluted enough that when it dries, it dried quite soft
Awesome!!💖
Thank you! ❤️
