Today is my birthday and I received the MkII 50. I was quite happy. Then I saw this. Now I’m coping
@LiamM272 happy birthday! And hey don’t worry about it, the mk2 is still amazing when you connect it to a pc/laptop and use tone studio. I don’t see a point in getting a Gen 3 yet.
Happy birthday, your amp is still great so no worries! I hope you have a lot of fun with your new amp.
Happy birthday! It might be under the return policy still. Absolutely no shame in returning it for any reason.
Keep it, save up for the Katana 100 Gen3 and run both together.
I have a GX100 and run one line to my Artist and one line to my Kat50. The Artist provides bottom end and the 50 provides great highs! My sound is incredible and full now.
Give it back before it’s too late 😭
I took the Katana on tour back in 2022 and it was one of the best decisions ever. It will never be what a tube amp is, but: it weighs like 35 lbs, doesnt require a massive pedalboard to get 95% of the way to the tones you want, and in the case of damage or theft, I'm only out like $300. That to me is really where it shines: Affordability and practicality.
Yep. That's why I decided to go for the Katana as well. I really wanted to go the route of building big pedalboards with "classic" amplifiers, but it's difficult to beat the value of what the Katana can do with such an easy and simple setup. The cost is a factor too, theft is definitely something you gotta worry about when you're not playing at home.
Stop lying.
@@kennethc2466 Lol plenty of people use katanas in live settings.
@@photoniccannon2117 Sure. I'm totally convinced that kids play them in their parent's basement, 'live'. You prove it quite well.
@@kennethc2466 You haven’t been in your local music scenes then.
"You may be called BOSS, but you are not the boss of me"
- Mike Cole, 2024
That feeling you get when your Katana Artist is less than a year old and you find out a new one is coming 😳
I feel like if you have the Artist the new ones aren’t worth the upgrade
@@stirlinghoweI'm in a similar situation, but I can't say that I fully agree. In the new andertons video they demo'd for the Gen3, they did a comparison between the Mk2 and Gen3 with everything at 12, and honestly the tonal difference was certainly there and was even more tube-like. With that said, it was done with th what looked like the 50 models. So a true comparison won't be available until they release the artist gen3...
@@aiden4269 Funny I'm watching that video as I type this! It's always easier to split hairs when doing A/B testing, but in a real-word scenario your audience isn't going to hear the difference at all. And for bedroom playing, you can definitely dial in a similar, if not exact tone with some fiddling. I suppose if you just want to plug and play without diving into the Tone Studio, it might be easier to squeeze out a marginally better sound with the panel on Gen 3.
50 Mk2 to Artist Gen 3 is a more substantial upgrade and one I'm kiiiiiinda considering. But if you're just looking within the same line (i.e. 50 to 50, Artist to Artist), I don't think it's worth the upgrade, especially if you've just purchased a new Mk2. Just my 2 cents!
That feeling you get when you just bought a katana MK2 100 last week
Oh the joys for digital
Great video as usual Mike. It is important to keep in mind the various types of guitarists: bedroom/beginner, first time band, open mic/busker performer, or pro like yourself. Most UA-cam guitar videos are produced by pros, teachers and stores so the lower rank of players never get a voice in what is important or even necessary and most UA-cam gear videos do not address our requirements. The Katana II 50 EX goes a long way to meet our needs. It is affordable, flexible, small and light enough to transport, yet has a big sound. What it is missing is the XLR output for PA when doing open mic gigs. The Katana II 100 EX has this, but it is too big, loud and expensive for most home use. I would love to do an "amateurs" review based upon real life experience. Then again, someone like me would never get selected by BOSS.
The boss katana is a fuckin workhorse, shit does what it needs to do so well. Mine has had an entire bottle of beer spilt on it, sat in a slightly flooded basement, and its resting place is my cars trunk. I basically run a permanent torture test on the thing and it just takes it and keeps pushing. Fuckin well done Boss.
Yeah, but now they've got this one, and you've got to worry that they didn't cut corners..... again.
@@Da_Publickfrom his personal experience he just wrote about above, there is no need to worry about cutting corners is there?
@@jasonlewis5350 There's always a need to worry. He's gonna have to give it the 'Beer-and-Basement' test. 🤣
@@Da_Publick LOL nice.
Great job showcasing that amp Mike. Ive always loved Boss pedals for their awesome effects and relatively quiet performance, but that amp sounds lush! Especially with the push engaged ❤️❤️
Ordered a Katana 50 MkII this morning and the same day, the Gen 3 comes out...
At least it came out the same day you ordered so you have a chance to cancel!
Yes agree I bought A Boss Katana Artist 2. A month ago. Love it. Really like the control knobs facing out instead of from the top. Versatile amp 💯. I have a Boss me 90 still in the box in my closet. Haven't had time to mess with yet. Uggh. Hopefully soon 😊
I use a Katana 50wt, and I love it. Inexpensive, and does what I need it to. Works great for recording and performing.
I bought a Boss GT-1 about 5 years-ago for quiet practice in my tiny L.A. apartment.
I can get just about any sound that I need out of that thing, and my tone-snob buddies think I’m miking my amps. 🤷🏻♂️
“My tone snob buddies” 😂 roasted lmao
Good video. Very informative, thank you. I just got the katana go and I really like it so far. Had the katana 50 mkii and the 100 mkii amps but ended up selling them and getting a Roland blues cube. It’s a great amp but I do miss some of the effects from the katana amps. That’s why I picked up the go and it’s serving it’s purpose. Boss has an advantage in the solid state world with their tube logic technology. Gets you pretty darn close to a tube amp. Good time to be alive and play guitar.
Liked and subscribed.
Thanks
“Wait, wuddyu MEAN there’s a NEW one?”
Oh, how many times have I said that to myself?
I usually play a small two rock, and I swear when I heard you play Lenny I felt like it could have been coming out of my own amp
I’ve only played the mki but the feel with boss is great too.. good on them, killing it
Bringing access to great tone
The Katana was a game-changer for me. It doesn’t do any one thing superlatively well, but it does a good job at everything it does. I gigged with a Mk. 1 for years. It was lightweight, took pedals well, it was rock-solid all the time. I played solo jazz/fingerstyle gigs with it, then went to rock shows. I also never needed the 100W mode. 50W was plenty loud enough for rehearsals and shows. I’m excited to put a Mk. III through its paces.
I have a Kantana Artist 100. It’s great amp. I was playing an outdoor gig and there was a cloud burst of 1.5 inches of rain. We scrambled getting the equipment separated from electricity. I found the boss six button foot controller for the Kantana in 2 inches of rain water. 💦. The amp survived and the foot controller dried out and worked fine later that week. My only complaint is that the overdrive voicing on all the channels sounds fizzy and undefined. It’s also a great amp if you’re using only in ear monitors
Always wanted to try these amps thanks Mike for the review
nice job mike,.. really like your product reviews Dig!
The pedal platform! Thank you. Yes, I'm thinking about one.
I recently decided to pickup bass and bought a Rumble 500. For grins, I decided to model preamps on my Helix and run it into the FX return of the Rumble. Best backline sound I’ve gotten from my Helix and it only weighs 36.5 lbs.
Such a missed opportunity. The katana Go has a small LCD screen that allows for a tuner and to see what effect is selected so you don't have to carry a crib sheet to see what effect "yellow" is. It's their own design! Why isn't it in the Katana? Such a shame.
Awesome vid man
Being a tube/valve amp loving Canuck I’ve been afraid almost of what might be left In the future as these things continue to become more rare for parts and expensive to build (good ones, subjective as that might seem it’s not)
Great clean to me is about feel and this seems as close as I can hear
I’ll try one at my local long and mcquaid with my gig board and see what happens
I still stocked up on 6v6 and 12ax7s for my pair of fenders
Shalom from Victoria BC
Bonjour From France,
I bought recently a Roland Blues Cube ( 30 w ) Hot and an Artist ( 80 w). I’m really satisfied with both.
The 30w Blues is a one channel amp ,so I need two overdrives pedals , one to push the other.
The Blues Cube Artist has two channels. For classic Rock ,one overdrive pedal is enough to push the drive channel and get creamy tones.
When I use my Strat Ultra with vintage noiseless pick ups, I turn the bass and treble down a bit on the amp. The JHS hauting mids ( always on,) fills the big mid range gap , without adding some weird character to the Strat.
Contrary to my last amp ( DV MARK JAZZ 12, all transistor) , the Roland Blues Cube can be heard ( if I turn it slightly towards me ) even on a chair placed two meters away on my left, with my mixer in between. There ‘s no deep volume cut when you make two steps away from the amp.
Some purty playin in this vid! Way to go Mike! Really nice!
I’m getting one. I’ve hade the original and the mkii. They just sound great every time. Best value on the market.
Great video. You've converted me to a subscriber with just one video. I really enjoy your relaxed and knowledgeable approach as well as your playing. Hi from Canada. :)
They sound incredible! I decided on a Roland Blues Cube, but Boss is making great amps!
I bought new the Katana Artist 100 three years ago and I love it. First of all it’s more amp than I am a guitarist but I love all the features and the WAZA speaker is a singer for sure.
I'm sure you can dial in the "Pushed" sound in the Mark II no problem ;)
Or Mark 1 for that matter.
Kinda. Most of the tone benefit so well with the greed overdrive setting anyways. But I think this will add SOME degree of variation to the choices now.
Dang kid! That chunk of non-tube horse crap sounds dang good!
I was hoping they would include a built-in looper for the 50 or at least provide send-effect loops. I can't justify getting the 100w as a practice amp and perfer the smaller size.
If pedals are your thing, you could always snag a used GT-100 for around $200-250 these days. It's a little bit older, but it was actually the direct predecessor in terms of the underlying technology that was used to develop the Katana. Probably could get fairly similar tones and flexibility out of it, but have a proper full pedalboard with a more flexible signal chain built in.
It would be nice if the Katana 50 EX had the effect loop though, even if they didn't want to put it on the base model. Upgrading to the 100 makes the amp bigger and heavier, and not everyone really wants the size increase.
Yeah I live in a small Brooklyn apartment and I do not want the amp to be furniture size.
One question I have for you is how does that vintage sound on the Katana compare with the Nextone Stage?
@@raulrodrigueznyc I've never used the nextone, so I wouldn't have any ability to do a direct comparison myself. From what I've heard though, the nextone series sounds really good. For what it's worth, a lot of people who have tried them seem to prefer them over the Katana.
Trippy, we both have a Katana AND an SE Silver Sky. I hardly ever use either, opting for my Martin 000-10e through a Fender Acoustasonic 90, XLR out to the board, instead, for ANY genre, Pop classics to Hendrix. One thing I don't like about modeling amps and preset tone settings - when you manually change from a preset, you get those weird tweaking sounds as it sweeps from the preset you came out of. On stage it just sounds glitchy. I'm REALLY an analog kind of guy. I AM "Relic"! But for band sets, the Katana 100 with the PRS SE Silver Sky is a good affordable working rig.
I love the tones and information! Excellent as always. But the craziest thing about this video is the iPhone ringtone coming in but you picked up an android 😭😭😭
🤣🤣🤣
Hey Mike great vid.. will be checking out Ver 3 for sure.. What camera do you use for your YTing ..Thx dude!
I’ve still got my MK1 katana head which I’d only use as a very reliable ’dumb’ amp for a typical pub gig…..but since my tiny little Hotone Britwind pedalboard amp paired with my minimal pedalboard gets me all the tones I use, I rarely bother with wood box amps anymore…..lugging around less crap has become my #1 priority
Cool vid, sweet playing, I have the Mk2 100 1x12 and although it's a great amp and I really like it, it doesn't even come close to my Marshall dsl40cr all tube amp, and I may get the Gen 3 Kat eventually, but in no rush to do so for the time being, but I like it!
I have a Vox Valvetronix 100, not too different from the Boss Katana. The Orange Super Crush 100 also sounds great. We live in a great time for amps and guitars. A quality and dependable giggable rig can be put together quite cheaply. I literally bought my new amp (lightly used, excellent condition) for $171.
Great for folks that are looking for their first katana, but for those of us with a Mk2 all you really need is a low gain pedal to emulate what the pushed offers.
The xsonic airstep is phenomenal too - been loving that for a few months now!
Yea, find I can get decent "on the edge of breakup" tones just by adding using a clean boost to the clean channel. It doesn't sound exactly like "pushed", maybe less vintage than the new options in Gen 3, but it still sounds good.
first amp was the Katana 50.
really love it.
skipped the mk two, but will prolly get the three.
Mobile app is the big bonus for me! Im no longer tethered to my pc . I don’t mind the price of adding a dongle.
I already bought 2 pedals for my 100 mk2
Just wonderful that I bought the katana artist mk2 like 2 months ago
Had the mkii 100 and really liked it. I now have the mkii Artist and absolutely love it. I am curious to see what this gen 3 Artist will be like
Hey, do you still have the cellophane on that pickguard?! Nice video!
I’m a katana fan. I have a 100/212, and the amp is a tank.
But now, I am interested. In Gen Three. After watching this video,
furthermore, by the way, I love your videos, Mike.
I’d love to see how close to the Pushed amp you can get by just adding some gain to Clean or backing off the gain on Crunch. I kind of saw a continuum from Clean to Crunch on the Mk II that didn’t necessarily leave room for a whole other amp in between. But you do make it sound sweet!
Would an effects loop be required/ideal for playing into a Katana? I haven't tried playing a pedal board into the front end of a 50watt Katana because I assumed the built into effects of the amp like compression might negatively effects the input of pedals?
Looks like you are playing a 100w when you use the pedal here?
Still enjoying my Katana Artist Mark 1 - no need to upgrade. If anything, I'll get a ToneX before upgrading my Katana.
Nice video, Hey I'm in between the Katana 100 mark 3 or the Marshall DSL 40CR which would you choose?
yep, im convinced. i want one now.
Waiting in the wings with a knowing smile, the Quilter Avaitor Cub.
Nice Review - thank you
...the Katana is much like my dirt bikes. I save up to buy the latest brand new model and another one comes out..yesterday, with that one little feature I'm looking for...
The Katana is a solid state amp with a AB circuit just like a tube amp including software....it's not digital. And in doing that Boss created the best selling amp in the world for going on 10 years now . The gen 3 sounds great so far but has a whole new engine so we shall see in the months to come. So far so good 👍🏻 though . I've never had my artist hooked to software I use pedals with mine . Just a fyi for artist users it will save about 300 hours to ditch software and simply buy a few boss pedals
I have an original that I have barely exercised but maybe I should go state of the art with the v3 and start over?
I watched the review (i.e.; come on down and buy this new thing) on Anderton's. Like a lot of people said, it's a REAL shame that Boss didn't include Bluetooth. Instead, you have to go out and buy a dongle. But the amp itself seems really good.
Great review, what speakers are in them?
What song did you play at 3:42?
My jazz teacher's old vinyl-padded amp with pull-out vibrato knob. The verses from "Happy Anniversary" by LRB? Lol.
Hi Mike, if you have the opportunity, test the Jims 45 from TC Electronic. I think it's the best solid-state device, and it works fine without the IR when connected directly to the FX return of an amp or when using cabinet emulations on the DAW. It has the best high-gain sound. Cheers!
Just bought a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster head and tube amps, have no competition.
Most newly released individual pedals are $150.00-$350.00 depending on the variation. BOSS Katana Series (Old to New) at the 50 watt combo price point is (new) $229.00 - $349.00. So why not get the whole amp for the relative same price of your next pedal. I'm getting one, but waiting for the EX Gen 3 version in June to drop.
Great line of thinking - and also get a whole bunch of built-in very decently emulated Boss pedals and rackmounted effects as well...
Mike you are a likeable guy. enjoy your content
Legend! Well said Mike. Love that you love it!
what do you think about the new Line 6 Catalyst CX amps ? would be great to having your opinion
I kinda like the Katana, but it felt like I always trying to dial in a tone that I couldn’t get. It sounded good in other aspects I couldn’t describe but in the end I got a Blues Junior IV, and had better luck dialing in tones with pedals. MK2 Artist was no slouch but it was different to navigate when you need a stomp box to kick in the effects you want as opposed to turning on a witch
Your videos rule Mike!
While I like today's digital amp options, I have to also consider that I had my 1973 Princeton Reverb repaired in 2023 and it's great. Would the Katana even be useable in 2073?
I want to see the blue Sterling guitar review. I’ve been thinking about wanting to get one.
Future me is excited to hear your comparison between this new Katana with your ME-90 into it and also into a tube amp.
My man working hard for all the sponsorship
I would say this and the Gamma 25/50 watt. Only down side to the gamma is it doesn’t have an onboard reverb. The gamma has no built in effects
hey mike my boss died. can i take it to a tech to fix like my 5e3 that i've been using hours a day since the 90s?
damn im jst getting bombarded by these gen 3 videos
That's hiw i use my valeton 9:09
I choose the amp tone i want, and then adjust the effects to suit the tone i want. Now i have a bank of amps and cabs with their own effects
Also a church guitarist
Played a katana next to our guitarist reverb deluxe, once volume gets cranked to stage level the rich tones of the valve made the boss sound very cheap in comparison, still love my katana but for live it's mediocre sadly but it's cheap and amazing value
I won't be buying a gen 3 katana but, out of interest, does anybody know if the "sneaky amps" can be unlocked on them.
m a beginner and see that several videos show a mic in front of ther amp being demoed...why is that ?
wait until you try peavey bandit, the red strip one, your mind would be blown.
I'm still waiting for the update on my Peavey Triumph PAG 60, but for real...30 years later, I finally put new caps in it, didn't really even need that =)
Mike's channel got bigger. His gear got more expensive. LOL LOL. Funny how that works.
It's truly odd! It's almost like success allows you to enjoy nicer things.
Liking the pushed sound... John Mayer is my idol.
I have that Strat, it’s great.
I got line six, Hughes and Kettner, fender and Marshall amps
I also have two katanas, katana air and headphones and a gt100 from boss
Hands down for the money, boss has big balls to make such a cool amp. Way to go Boss!
So what did I do?
I bought the Gen three because they did it again even better
Nice video too Mike, keep it up
Nice playing!
I bought my 150w Katana Mark II for $150 at an estate sale. My neighbors love it. 😂
anyone knows what’s the song name of what he was playing the first half?
I have a katana mk2 100 watt amp and I have been playing it for while and I have tried a bunch of patches and just wasn’t happy with the tone. I got a used Tiny Terror and an Orange PPC112 60 watt cab and the sound is so much richer, also the distortion or crunch (just raise the gain a bit) sounds way better than the katana. I am not sure if I am just an odd duck but to me it isn’t all that close.
I was at Guitar Center a few times and I tried both the katana mkii 50 and an Orange combo amp. Hated the tones on the katana but liked the orange better. Not enough to buy one but it's something I would consider if I found it at a good price.
@@mr.d.572 I ended up getting a Helix LT with a Headrush FRFR speaker. I am programming it now with the sound I want. Great effects so far will tell you how it sounds once I get the HeadRush delivered they didn't have anymore at guitar center. Got 48 month financing 0% interest.
Ive got the 100w MK2. I dont see anything on the new one that makes me want to upgrade. Great amps though.
The Boss Katana 100 really can do it all.
I like how you try and make like BOSS didn't send you or pay you, you are by far the most subtle UA-cam peddler
It’s always a little silly when they actually try to tell the public that brand is just as good as a tube amp. They’re pretty close, but no, they’re not as good.
Has everything but a tuner. Wish they’d add one to the footswitch.
I own a katana head mk2 and to be honest i don't feel the need to make the generational jump. The new series as still that annoying high end and I'm my mk2 all the effects are amazing, there's everything I need and it takes pedals like a champ. I think a new buyer who doesn't have any version of the katana should go for the mk3, but who plays the mk2 can still enjoy their amp with no worries.
I'm a bedroom player who was really intrigued when then the Catalyst came out, although I was happy enough with my Katana 50 that I stayed with it. The big thing with the Catalyst was I'm a clean-ish player, and most of the amp models on the Katana are for the high gain guys. The Catalyst on the other hand had a couple more clean-ish amp models for guys like me, and listening to them on UA-cam, they sounded fantastic. I'm guessing that the 'push' mode on the new Katanas is to address that issue, although I'm not really sure they addressed it adequately. I think I still give that one to the Catalyst.
Yea, the Katana can do really nice clean tones too, but it really only has one channel for it. That's fine for me, but I have noticed that I sometimes have to put a little bit of extra effort into dialing it in if I'm playing a guitar with high output pickups and want to limit the breakup.
Agree. Had a Katana head for a while and was never really happy with it.
Got the Catalyst a while ago and the cleans are definitely better (in my opinion).
Also, it takes pedals well if needed and the ability to bypass the amp and use it as a FRFR speaker is great.
Been using it like this with a Headrush MX5 for a while now.
built like a mobile phone, will last just as long
I use the Cortana for one thing and 1 thing only Practice you can turn it on and off at will and not hurt anything where with the 2 bamp you definitely would cause problems turning it on and off like that but I would never play Live with a cortana
love a good Cortana🤣
But how is it in a live situation in a small club, competing against a hard hitting drummer, when there is only a crappy PA for the vocalist?
Don’t think there’s enough changes to upgrade from mk2 to mk3.
Planning on trading my MKII 50 in for an artist 100 1x12
I'll stick with my mkll. Not enough there to warrant the upgrade.
When it's able to move my guts around I'll believe it can replace a tube amp.
I remember that Jimmy had a digital amp with the ability to update the software on the computer. LOL
Now today we spend thousands of dollars, all the neat computer gadgets etc.... to re create those very same tones.. LOL
