The funny thing for me is that I never remember ever learning to kick a football. I don't think it was until much later on where coaches would give positive or critical feedback. I'm not sure the dropping the ball on the ground would have helped me in my initial years, but I guess I can't know either way. I think the best approach would be basically where you tell a person, young or adult, "try to kick it", and then look at what they can do, and give them the slightest thing to consider and keep doing that over a period of time. I say this because to me kicking a football just came naturally without really thinking about what I was doing, just doing it enough times.
Yeah 100%. A typical coaching session goes like this: Have a kick to warm up and see how their form is. Film their technique from various angles. Show them and provide feedback. Then have another kick and just let them focus on the area for improvement and if that doesn’t work then we do drills like the ones in this video to fix where it’s breaking down.

My issue with basically teaching people to drop the ball is that it could actually give them the habit of literally dropping the ball in a game.
