Century - Conquest of Time ... Fantastic album !
I listened to the Drain & Prong albums thanks to Canz, immediately bought them. I also bought Dying Fetus thanks to Count Ralfus and Cruel Force thanks to Nick.
@ Craig Kaminski - Black Rainbows. Just go back in time with their catalogue. The current drummer has been with them for the last three albums (also Cosmic Ritual Supertrip and Pandemonium). He's the best and most groovy drummer they had. Really improves their up tempo songs imo. The more slow cosmic songs were always great.
Lots of great stuff to discover. Holy Moon is great.
Will do; thanks!
1.Duskwood..The last voyage
2.Extreme..six
3.Therapy?..Hard cold fire
Only 3 that really done it for me this year and thanks to Pete for his review on Duskwood that's what got me to buy it and I love it..
Dead on, Butch! Rival Sons are carrying the flag for American hard rock. And yes, Jay Buchanan is the preeminent vocalist in modern hard rock - his range, tonality and power simply drops jaws! European rock fans know what's up......criminally undervalued here in lame hip hop nation.
Here’s my top 5 favorites and honorable mentions

They’re very cool and almost totally unknown! Glad you liked them.
Uriah heaps chaos and colour is hands down the best album released in 2023 it stands up with their very best albums. Can't understand how it wasn't even mentioned.
It's a masterpiece
Spoiler alert…it’s one of my favorites of 2023, but I didn’t mention it because it’s coming up in my favorites daily countdown.

2: The Zombies - Different Game.
3: Church of Misery - Born Under a Mad Sign.
4: Primal Fear - Code Red.
5: Ihsahn - Fascination Street Sessions.
Nice!
Rival Sons were the same for me like King's X was for Pete. I never got them until the last few months. Now I think they're the best hard rock band out there. What talent in this band. Have to agree with Butch's constant praise for Jay Buchanan. Has to be the best singer out there these days. Up there with Glenn Hughes in my opinion. Wishing a Happy New Year to the SOT crew and nation. Thanks for keeping our music going! 🤘
For me, it's the debut from Jelusick, Follow the Blind Man, as my top album of 2023. Phenomenal. The production is top notch, the songs are loaded with hooks and choruses, no filler, and amazing vocals and guitar work. Just love it!
Inclined to agree. Top album and great to hear Jorn type vocals with John Sykes style guitar. Classic Rock UK magazine didn't place it in their top 50, which shows how clueless they are.
Cirith Ungol rules, that album's a banger for '23. ⚔🧝
Great number 1 Ryan great band waiting for my copy to,have 2 t shirts as well.
My top 5 would be:
Katatonia - Sky Void of Stars
Ad Infinitum - Chapter III Downfall
Velian - Spectacle of Tragedy
Within Temptation - Bleed Out
Smoulder - Violent Creed of Vengeance
Honorable mentions:
Primordial - How it Ends
Kamelot - The Awakening
1. Green Lung-This Heathen Land
2. Dozer-Drifting in the Endless Void
3. Blood Ceremony-The Old Ways Remain
I need to hear that new Green Lung one, but definitely dig and own both of those other two!
@@markfurru3368 it’s not as bass heavy and more melodic than the first 2 so it may a little off putting at first but the songs are more mature (absolutely no filler) and I can’t stop listening to it. For me it’s their best yet.
Cool to see Christian bring up Kvelertak. I bought that record about a month ago as a blind buy based on the cover alone and still haven't got around to listening to it. Now I can't wait to crank it up!
Excellent show, everyone. I haven't listened to (or bought) anywhere near the amount of 2023 albums covered on this episode. I did get some, but I plan to reveal them slowly over the coming months in 2024 on some show or other. 😉 With that said, I think now is a good time to reveal one of my 2023 purchases, one that I am sure will make Pete (and possibly a few others around here) smile. I actually went and listened to Enslaved's Heimdal - and no, not just now, but right after the album review was posted back in March. I loved it, though I didn't get around to buying it until the following month. It arrived on an overcast/rainy Saturday afternoon back in April; opened it, put the disc in, put the headphones on, and hit the play button. In addition to a wintry setting (I fully agree with Steve on this), the album fits right in with rainy day listening. I eventually bought more albums from the band, and I'd have to agree with many around here - these guys are great!
Great episode!
Once again i want to thank SOT for another great year.I am going to check out ALL the picks in this video.Already Prong and Black Rainbows is on my bulk annual purchase list...Have a great holiday everyone...and looking forward to 2024 with you.....Its a pleasure for me to be a subscriber to this channel.:)
Every end of year, i go through the hard rock and metal lists on youtube and usually discover 1 or 2 new albums i hadn't heard and enjoy a lot. I'm glad to see a lot of variety in the picks on this channel, as a lot of other channels are all about death/black metal and you rarily see power metal or traditional metal.
Some of my top albums this year include Kalmah's self titled, Avatar's Dance Devil Dance and Twilight Force's Heart of Wintervale.
Well, my favorites of the year might be a bit different. No particular order either.
5. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation (Yes, that's the full album title)
4. Suburban Legend - Durry
3. O Monolith - Squid
2. Darkfighter - Rival Sons
1. Everyone is Dead Except Us - Wolfie's Just Fine
6. Dream Machine - Des Rocs
7. Living Proof - Drain
8. This Heathen Land - Green Lung
9. Fatalism - Polaris
10. Lightbringer - Rival Sons (it's an ep but whatever)
My top 5 metal is so so different from all your lists. Here it is. Be very surprised!
1. Crown Lands, Fearless
2. Forod Lad, Chapter Prologue - And then came the Silence
3. Niovel, Never Strangers
4. Ekyrian, Cuentos Junto a la Hoguera
5. Angra, Cycles of Pain
Chris Reifert is going to be on SOT??? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AUTOPSY RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Good call on Ice Age, Christian! Never thought they'd create another album after so many decades. But it's quite solid! Lotsa fantastic stuff this year, including Prong, Metal Church, Peter Gabriel, Steven Wilson, Moon Safari, Uriah Heep, Winery Dogs, Steve Lukather, Pattern Seeking Animals, Overkill, Sorcerer, Crown Lands, etc.
Good show, I got a few things to check out, including Traindodge, Angra, Ritual Howls, and The Bretwaldas of Heathen Doom! Glad to FINALLY see folks talking about High Spirits here. I've been talking them up in the chats weekly all year that the majority of the SoT community would love High Spirits, and it's been crickets. It's worth mentioning that while it is a one-man band in the studio with Chris Black, who also does Superchrist, Pharaoh, Aktor and Dawnbringer, the live band has been the same lineup for a decade and is super tight. Also, his more traditional metal band Dawnbringer will be playing Hell's Heroes VI in Houston in March.
And a Happy Holidays HVS
Another great show, guys. A lot of homework now.
1. Alkaloid - Numen (progressive, technical death metal)
2. Avenged Sevenfold - Life Is But A Dream (they are now art/prog metal)
3. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse (quirky metal)
4. Riverside - IDentity (prog-rock)
5. Scaphoid - Echoes of the Rift (instrumental prog-metal)
HM's: Lovebites - Judgement Day, Steven Wilson - The Harmony Codex, Mushroom Giant - In A Forest (instrumental psych/prog hard-rock).
#1: Ne Obliviscaris - Exul
#2: Church of Misery - Born Under a Mad Sign
#3: Unearth - The Wretched, The Ruinous
#4: Spirit Adrift - Ghost of the Gallows.
#5: Majesties - Vast Reaches Unclaimed. In Flames - Foregone. Enforced - War Remains

Thanks Butch for bringing out Anthem. Never heard of them before. I've been listening to them solely since this episode came out. Incredible music!
Happy holidays HVS crew, and thanks for the fun show! I mentioned my 5 hard rock/metal picks in chat. They will be showing up in my main list too.
My albums of the year 2023
5. Within Temptation Bleed Out
The symphonic/ gothic Dutch metal band provide what you'd expect with their eighth album, sultry lush vocals fronting hook laden power chords. The full and open production allows the band to excel in their execution of light and shade. This isn't subtle. It's theatre of the most accomplished kind. Within Temptation's dramatic delivery bridges instant accessibly with a depth that allows for repeat listens. Simply put, the band's conviction is infectious and leaves the listener devoted well past the initial seduction. High reward indeed.
4. Overkill Scorched
2019's Wings of War was a solid effort, but this effort appears to be sweeter. New Jersey's finest prove again they can hit harder than most. Bobby keeps "blitzing" with a vocal delivery that oozes charisma and real bite. The production captures the band to their core: punchy, well rounded with serious bottom and brimming with underground piss and attitude. This is not the sound of a legacy band fat from their previous feasts, the skull-bat maintains it's urgency and appetite.
3. RIVAL SONS Darkfighter & Lightbringer
Yes, these were released as two individual albums but one is the yin to the other's yang, and therefore it's fair to view them as one entity. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it)
To the curmudgeons that rant about how the best hard rock bands have long lost gone, "There's nothing out there of monolithic value" - stop listening to Physical Graffiti for the umpteen time! Give it a rest, it's not going to vanish and slap these records on. Jay Buchanan oozes "rock star" from every pore and Scott Holiday soars with the highest of flyers, ably supported by a rhythm section that is content in the pocket. The breadth and depth displayed in these album(s), the fact that they were released separately and not as a double album, shows a maturity and confidence that places them head and shoulders above their peers. This is 70s rooted hard rock with a modern flair and a rapturous dynamic. Soon these brazen rockers will warrant their own monolith and the lands will be futile around it.
Killers: Mirrors, Bird in the hand, Guillotine, Mercy, Redemption, and Mosaic
2. Soen Memorial
Soen deliver the album the audience have been hoping for since Imperial. Memorial is bleak, emotive, powerful, and anthemic: a testament to a band at their apex. The album benefits from distinct variations of shade that keep the listener engaged, there's plenty of scope here. Most importantly, there is beautiful songcraft here. This is their most mature effort and it sounds effortless.
The production sounds huge complimenting the sheer ambition of the songs. If Soen aren't elevated higher with this release, the world should sulk away in shame. Modern metal does not get much better. This proves the Swedish masters to be unbreakable.
Killers: Sincere, Unbreakable, Violence, Hollowed (Elisa), and Memorial.
1. Earthside Let the Truth Speak
What happens when four gifted musicians come together with the Herculean task of creating something that is transformative, transcendent and tantamount? Without sounding pretentious, this is the prize.
This is "cinematic rock" that ventures through new age, ambience, contemporary jazz, soundtrack score and dare I say it - new metal. The diversity here is organic and the vast sonic landscapes are untethered and limitless.
There is also level of sophistication here that is normally exclusively seen in parties at the top of a particular genre, here we witness an almost musical polimathic ability. It's remarkable and at times overwhelming.
No album this year is more aspirational. No album this year displays more grandeur. The kaleidoscope of colours and emotions drawn are majestic and the frontiers journeyed are pressed further with every listen.
This is not overstatement, it's simply the truth. It's Earthside and it's magnificent.
It’s finally here! I love this episode every year. Happy holidays SoT! Also, can we get Alo’s picks?
I hate this time of year. I have so much more music to listen to now. Ha ha. Thanks for the great show Pete.
I've seen Rival Sons twice and they were perfect both times. I am in the minority but I don't want them to be discovered. I saw them twice and it was only 40 bucks. I'm tired of paying hundreds of dollars to see a concert. The fact that I can see the best rock band in the US in a small theater for 40 bucks is unbelievable.
I saw Rival Sons this summer in a theater I think I only payed 50 dollars not sure but worth it and was a great show

UDO is touring next year and he will play a really small club like 5 minutes from my house. Plan to check out this legend, as well as Uli Jon Roth in the Spring. Should be another great live year. Lots of great picks, many are on my list. Dozer "Drifting in the Endless Void" was not mentioned, one of the best of the year IMO. Also Mammoth WVH's sophomore album is even better than the debut. That one is high up my list as well.
I like that Karen once again gave props to Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats that live album has me pumped & hoping they jump on a tour in North America in 2024
Surprised that Alice Cooper the Road didn't make his Top 30 because it had me going back to it multiple times
Enslaved continues to put out great music for sure make my end of the year list
Enjoy the holidays 🤘🤘🤘
I have a lot of catching up and investigating to do with some of these picks🤘

@@sotdude7 Awesome work. Thank you so much! Have a nice Xmas and New Year to you and yours!!
Butch ....great pick with Anthem , spot on about their catalog as well . I saw them in Japan in June in Tokyo , my first time seeing them as I have been a fan since the beginning but the touring just didn't happen here except for 87 , but that got derailed in L.A. Growing up on long island and of the same age grouping , I'm 54 , this band is so underrated and should be more well known by all their output , its fantastic .
It was my 18 year olds first concert , we went over to Japan as a father son vacation/high school graduation present . Now , I'm broke , 😂 , but also bought tons of music at disk union too . Best time of my life !! .
Merry Christmas to all SOT , cheers from Sarasota , Fl.

Just watched it now so I'm rather late to the party here - but have to say that Butch's #1 pick is great. I have never heard of them before but have just checked out the album on Spotify and boy, it's good. I hope it's out on CD as I prefer physical copies of albums I really like. Also, I need to shout out Ryan's HM Bretwaldas of Heathen Doom. It's totally Lemmy singing! Buying that as well.
