Yeah, that (and the fellow being clearly far too young and virile) ruined it for me. At least split the difference by actually howling the word "howl". Quite effective.
Maybe- Isn’t the scene ‘unactable’? Unless you are Olivier... Let me share a tidbit with you: Lee J Cobb did this scene on a Dean Martin variety show, late 60’s.. I was still in High School when I saw it. The howl howl bit was a gutterall scream... a really amazing performance. Martin was a real champ to let Cobb perform this on what was really just a light musical-comedy format. Probably Cobb’s lifetime dream.
I wished I had seen this but I was somewhere else at the time. However thanks to UTUBE for letting me have an opportunity to a glimpse and I can imagine those that were blessed to go and see this know they saw something memorable.
This is the least heart-rending rendition of that scene I have ever watched performed. I agree with the previous poster who said Shakespeare intended for the actor to howl rather than to say "howl".
I agree. I wept bitterly to see this scene so terribly butchered. By far the most soul-less rendition I have ever seen. It was like watching castrated mice performing Shakespeare and hamming it up
william mann film Yeah and so I happen to have an appreciation more than some as someone who has not only studied and followed Shakespeare's works , but also I have a GREAT deal of respect and admiration for Greg Hicks as well ..
That's great for you, someone who has studied & followed (whatever that means) Shakespeare's works.... I'll try to remember you when I'm rehearsing Macbeth to perform it in 2 weeks in China & Hong Kong, and when I act & direct Hamlet, Othello & Lear later in the year.....
This is one of the most heart-rending scenes in the entire history of theater.
I really can't help but feel Shakespeare intended the actor to howl rather than say howl.
Maybe That's usually how it's done.
Yeah, it drives me mad. Everyone seems to do it...

I think he is imploring everyone else in the scene to howl, to share in his grief.

A great actor.

He sounds like an English Christopher Walken!
i like when he said howl ;)
hello, who was playing King Lear please ? I have resumed my studies and I wanted to present this scene at my literary's class.
This is Greg Hicks
No one ever has the balls to let it all hang out...nfucking balls ...check out the Russian lear from 1970...see how shakespeare intended it
Albert Finney did a good job of it in "The Dresser".
Can you send me a link to the Russian version?
I may find the RCS version of King Lear unwatchable, if this particular rendition of that scene is any indication of the quality of the whole.
I did king lear in school last week and today and I was the last daughter to die and it was so fun
King Lear's pride has consequences
Cordelia my beloved Cordelia
Who is here from that creepypasta?
EXCELLENT BEST KING LEAR EVER
He should be louder and more distraught.
poor acting
spolier much????? :P
that was awful! the man is holding his dead daughter in his arms and that is the best he can do?
this guy cannot act - this is funny
william mann film You wouldn't know talent if it smacked you .. His name happens to be Greg Hicks and he's an EXCELLENT actor and director !!!!
