      He meant psychological westerns that looks at the inner side of what fuels a cowboy, which I would expect from a guy who wanted to make entertainment more than analysis.

      ​@@daltonanderson3718 He said psychotic, not psychological. Red River is exactly what you described as a psychological western, so that would be a strange thing for Hawks to criticize.
      Based on his criticism of High Noon and The Left Handed Gun, I believe he meant westerns where the hero is emotionally disturbed or weak and it feels like they don't "belong," to cite the man.
