  • Hey friends, this video is dedicated to all you newly graduated vets (congrats!) who are stepping into your first veterinarian job. How exciting! These are mistakes and lessons learned in my first 3 months out as a new vet, I've learnt so much more since then (and will likely continue to do so!) I hope they can help ease some fears & help you transition into your new role better than me when you first start 💖

    I am a recent veterinary medicine graduate from Cambridge university, one of the Chief Mentors at Vet Mentor, and currently in small animal clinical practice. I make videos to help pre-vet students get into veterinary school, how I am surviving new graduate vet life and trying to be the best version of ourselves.

    I'm studying veterinary in a country/language that I am not native in and it is honestly just so much extra stress on top of the actual courses. I'm looking through your videos to find advice in the veterinary world or anything that I could relate to or prepare for, thank you for the videos you make.

      I was originally thinking of doing something similar myself, however I was warned not to because of the language barrier. May I ask what inspired you to study in a different country (ex. for financial reasons)? And do you think it was worth it?

    Hi! I'm currently 14 and about to go into my freshman year in high school, I was just wondering if you have any tips about what I can start doing now to maximize my chances of becoming a vet. It has been my dream since I could talk and I would really appreciate any things that I could do!

    What exactly happens during emergencies? And there isnt enough time for the client and doctor to talk about prices but the client has made it clear that they want their pet to be well and has agreed for the vet to do what ever they may to help. What would happen during or after this situation?

    • @MayYean
      @MayYean  Рік тому +3

      great question Joice! So if there is a patient that needs medical help urgently, we will definitely stabilise the patient first (straight to oxygen chamber/ intubate for oxygen, pain relief, any medication if its in shock/ seizure for example, resuscitate if collapsed etc..) then if there is a staff available they will then consult with the client, get the history (eg. was it traffic accident, was there a toxin exposure), and then make a plan from there together with the owner (as after stabilisation and history you may have some idea on the prognosis, how much the owner wants to do for the pet), it definitely depends on a case-by-case basis as to what will happen next!

      hi, i have experience as a nurse at an ER vet hospital, and for us specifically, our client service representatives had a sort of script they went over with clients whose pets were rushed to the back right away. It has an exam fee, then an initial stabilization cost estimate, then a very rough further diagnostics estimate that the client can agree to immediately upon arrival. The client can agree or disagree to any of them (like yes to the exam but no to the others, or yes to the first two but no to the last). The vet team in the back would be able to start care immediately with a rough limit of care, and then once a nurse or doctor was available, they would go into the room for history and begin preparing an actual estimate for the client to agree to for further services.

    I’m just about to start vet school next month! Any advice if I could manage a job whilst studying. Just thinking about 12 hours or so a week and making sure i can take time off during exams or placements? Did anyone you know manage this?

    • @allyssabc315
      @allyssabc315 Рік тому +4

      I know there are a couple people in my class that hold a job during the school year. They have very very good time management skills and they really enjoy their jobs and see it as a way to get away from studying. Everyone is different. First year is a major adjustment, but I know that others have balanced just fine! If you find you are struggling, you can always quit the job and just focus on school!

    • @MayYean
      @MayYean  Рік тому +4

      yes definitely what allyssa said, its different for everyone, but I'd say try to get adjusted to the schedule first (esp if its your first year!) because it can be overwhelming, but once you've found a good balance then don't see why not, finding a part time job to build on your other soft skills etc is also beneficial :) all the best!

    My oldest jack Russell border collie mix has extreme anxiety about vet. She always needs her anal glands extracted so I think this associate vet with pain.how can I help her? Vet is always busy and understaffed I understand but hearing her in the back crying hurts our hearts we know she's not okay.
