This surface rust nonsense on mot's is in my opinion the powers that be trying to get us to buy new or nearly new cars , my Toyota is 11 years old and runs like a Swiss watch , I will not be getting rid of it anytime ever .

I lot of subframes have signs of rust shortly after they were delivered new. It's probably because manufacturer's only seem to give them one coat of a black gloss, if they did a better job of priming them like the whole body then they last a lot longer.

Love the advice at the end.
    My classic isn’t exactly a firebird, it’s a MK1 Mondeo TD
I took it out today for the time in ages and amazed how smooth it is on the motorway compared to newer cars. Best advice get them out and enjoy them

I have just had the MOT done on my 2000 Vectra which I had a lot of restoration work at the back end done when I bought it. It was quite ruthless, I got the phone call and they asked if i wanted the discs /pads done. I told them on the basis of the advisory report and the corrosion on it I pointed out that as it was on its deathbed it would not be economical to do it they then started back tracking on it ! So yes it’s going to be like that going forward.

It's down to testers discretion, and yes there's an advisory pre set for undertrays I think its down to experience/ product knowledge to advise for that given I understand the tester is responsible for certain things after a period of time but we all should test with confidence like I said advisory's are subjective from tester to tester.

U will get surface corrosion on subframes it happens on a car that is 10 years old.as along as it’s not corroded to the point on it needing replaced then it’s fine.its just mot testers being absolutely picky.if u had things like springs corroded. Struts corroded suspension arms corroded exhaust corroded u would have advisories three or four pages long.

Hello James, interesting report on the "Raffle mini" (well done to the winner!) and the natural concern about the corrosion / surface rust - well, to be expected due to the age of the car, BUT, it could have been worse! No it'd not a "rot-box" as the MOT inspection has given it a pass! I do like your brave attitude concerning the Land Rover, (as it is a make that constantly found in a garage having work done) and hope your wife enjoys the (expensive) car? Best wishes from Lincolnshire.

My garage has had 4 Vauxhall mokkas in with the Citroen/peugeot engine and the belts have started to break up and the car is only 4years old. Told the customers to go back to Vauxhall to c if they would contribute to the repairs.also had the Peugeots and Citroens in with the exact same problem. Mostly with the belt breaking down and blocking the oil pickup, but I understand some just because a tiny engine in a large car is a stupid idea. Tiny scabs from flaky powder coating should not receive the subframe corroded but not seriously weakened advisory.
You'll know exactly what I mean if I said a fiat 500/ ford Ka / Toyota aygo when they are nearly rotten, completely brown with surface rust, THAT is what the advisory is for - corroded but not yet seriously weakened.

There’s been no new instructions about advising this stuff, I think maybe they’ve got a new tester who loves the advisories. The thing to know is that mot standard is very low, so to fail on corrosion it has to be absolutely hanging, ie holed, so to advise it should be bad, surface corrosion will never warrant an advisory.

Is it true that you don't even need a driving licence ( or functioning eyes?! ) to drive one of those Peugeot 2008's?😉

Subframe rust? Wouldn’t it make sense to wire brush & paint before MOT? 🤔 Of course cars this age are going to have surface rust. The MOT system is becoming as woke as the rest of the UK 🤦🏻‍♂️😂🤣

I bought a 55 plate Renault Scenic with surface rust noted on the rear subframe - I had a look under before buying and it didn't look too bad. I've since had a trusted garage look at it and they complained about the mot changes, saying they'd probably have to note it, but it was not at all bad.
I'd second the suggestion that the government want old cars off the road - they do last a lot longer than they did in the late 80's (when a 12 year old car was barely alive) - the newest car I have is 15 years old!

I'd also just seen your video on the subframe of the car you had on a small lift in your 2nd unit ... so was a bit cavalier in thinking it wouldn't be too costly to fix ...
The Scenic actually came from your area of the country, with stamps from dealers / owners addresses in Barnstaple and Bideford.
It was a smoker's car, though the smell is fading. The door handles and centre console are sticky - and any cleaning that removes the stickiness also changes the colour (Old Gold fades to silver), which looks odd as the car interior is mostly shades of beige ...

MOT testers will have to tell you if the wheel arches are muddy soon.

Surely you can buy a cover for that seat base from Kia, they're not difficult to fit.

What a ridiculous state of affairs. Show me a car more than a few years old from this climate without any corrosion. Other parts will die on that car before it rots away.

(I believe that there is something in the pipeline from the european union ( and I would suggest from the WEF) about scrapping cars greater than 15 years old which they deem unfit for repair. Hence in a slow, step by step approach, you are seeing the introduction on the MOTs of rust of the subframe. So, by chipping away at both ends (new cars/old cars) you will see the end of petrol and diesel cars.

Great video and content. I hope you sell the Discovery, I am sure High Peak Autos would love to buy it, or maybe if AutoAlex is after a camera car. ♥🤣You got some great stock.
