It's amazing how weird the pre-bank stuff was in response to having multiple accounts, between this having a straight up save file limit, and box inexplicably having a "100 pokemon caught in the dex" requirement. I guess they were really scared of people like getting the dex done too easily.
It's capitalism, really; fixing a man-made issue. It's easy to get around, they just won't do it because it means they can't shove out something cheap. Like, My Pokemon Ranch is just a Mii Channel with Rumble models...
Thank you for bringing up the fact that we're all just sentient Ships of Theseus, it's always fun seeing people trying to twist their minds around that fact.
I lost SO many of my old pokemon because i wasn't aware of the "can't transfer between trainers" thing. I reset my older games semi-often, so imagine my shock when i found there was no way to rescue my pokemon. RIP Shiny Staraptor.
It was a really bad Wii that couldn't be connected to the internet - you can technically put Ranch on it through some...unscrupulous means though. It was a commercial failure and I remember some ex-employees mentioning that it was made solely because dinosaur executives thought an internet connection on a console was unnecessary in a post-Dreamcast gaming landscape. Very, very weird console.
@@PlaguevonKarma That's so wild to think about when you consider the age we live in! Cause even then the Dreamcast was ahead of it's time with events and patches! Really not surprised it flopped, but Nintendo really were dragged into the world of online kicking and screaming 😂
One, blessed acknowledgement of pokemon ranch, great way to just vibe. Second, you gave me genuine existential horror with that image of a 3ds with fungus in it
This is a great video. I bet you could've removed them by faking the original game, no? Where you replicate the tid/sid and trainername / gender and withdrawn them that way? Maybe it'd even notice at that point, though. Pokemon Ranch is so awful, it's worse than normal Box equivalents(even though it's cuter) since you can't transfer to other games using it. It's just extra pc storage for just diamond and pearl lol.
I did note that bit about the TID/SID somewhere I believe, not vocally but as a side note somewhere. That does work, but it requires even more work than just what I did here.
This is mad helpful! While I don't necessarily need this myself considering I got my current save files I'm sure my friends who use Ranch might appreciate the work you put in to make sure we get our pals back! Great video! ^_^
Between the lack of support for Plat/HG/SS and the fact you can't even transfer Pokemon unlike Box I'm surprised it had a use besides just storing nothing but Feraligatr.
I bought ranch a bit before the wii shop shut down, hoping to work on a living dex up to gen 5. I haven't gotten around to it. If i do go for mew, i promise not to create 8 files and delete them (honestly did not know this, wow)
For about 6 years now I just assumed the community would have found a way to unlock Ranch Pokemon from their eternal tomb, without even needing to look it up, and now this just confirms it... Also seemingly one of the only videos on the topic from a lite search, so thanks for that. Now just to find my Wii, hope it still works (or worse case hope that it's possible to harvest the hard drive to be transplanted into a functioning Wii), then extract my Very First Pokemon Ever a natural Level 100 Infernape that I managed to retain for almost 2 decades (wild that's only 3 and a half years away) thanks to Ranch...
It’s a good thing I never got this like my friend wanted me to. Not only did the family wii screech itself into oblivion, but I’ve reset over every single game I’ve ever haD
I've used all of them. Home is the most fit for purpose, while Ranch tries to be a game. Box and Bank are literally just storage systems, the former being extremely anti-consumer.
@@PlaguevonKarma that's a fair point! I just wish people would stop pretending HOME is inherently flawed just because the recent *games* don't allow certain transfers - like that's not a HOME issue that' a games issue and four years into dexit...I really don't think dexit is a problem anymore tbh. And I'm saying that as someone who's top favorite (furret) got Dexit'd TWICE. This was a long time coming and people shouldn't be surprised it did [shrug]
Oh, gracious, it's a bit of whiplash to hear someone I've spend hour listening to, herself getting into something I have some experience with. For a few years, it was my hobby to update the hacks for several systems -- at least three 3DSes, a Wii U, two PS Vita and a PSTV, and a PSP (that one being the latest, funnily enough). The robustness of 3DS hacking is such a heavensend, gives such a feeling of security in managing that system. Wii U felt more jank to me, and I never did figure how to get Final Fantasy VI Advance moved over to it, to the point I ended up completing my first playthrough via the Game Boy Player on an S-Video Out GameCube instead.
i have somewhat of a similar story, though it's not with pokemon ranch, but rather pokemon battle revolution...which is in no way a pokemon box style game... its the feeling of seeing pokemon that you cant get back okay 😭 to make a long story short, my very first run of platinum was connected to PBR and thus it has a save of not only all the pokemon i caught there, but also my main team and legendaries from pokemon sapphire (it was the first run i ever caught rayquaza, and i did it by playing through XD Gale of Darkness entirely just to transfer the master ball over. I was dedicated.) Come 2013 and the disk reader on my wii wasn't working anymore, got a wii u, never transferred any save data. So then, after I've grown into an adult with a job, I finally go get the disc reader repaired and my wii is up and running. And upon checking through the saves of all the games I had, I saw the file with my pokemon from Platinum...All the way from 2011. Obviously I had reset Platinum itself a long time ago, so there was no way to get them back. There were some rare events on there, too. I actually managed to download the events for Darkrai and Shaymin on that file before Black and White came out. But alas, there they are, stuck in limbo to this very day. And I don't think any sort of hacking is gonna let me reverse engineer that save back into Platinum.
This is probably too complicated to be practical, but have you considered RNG maniping for the same Trainer ID as the save files? Theoretically at least it should be possible to create an identical save file if the ID, SID and name match, that is if these are the only parameters that the game checks. If you`re lucky you may have a high level Pokemon like a Legendary without any EVs allocated to its stats, I haven`t used Pokemon Ranch, so depending on how much information the summary screen provides, it may or may not be feasible. But it`s probably easier to just use external software, even if the stars allign, you would still have to reverse search the SID for all eight saves (assuming they even have Pokemon suitable for calculations). Also I`m pretty sure that the gen 4 summary screen only shows the date of capture and not any additional information, which is just to big of a time frame to be realistically calculated, at least for some of the legendaries we can assume they hit earlier frames, since they may have taken a couple of attempts. If you`re already using thirdparty software, you could just access at most of the information required, but at that point it`s just easier to recreate the pokemon´, then to jump through all these extra hoops. Also chances are you already considered most of what I said becuase you`re you and probably know more about the games inner working than I could ever hope to. But I guess if you`re really adamant about doing it without cheating you could probably brute force a way.
This is all very possible, though Ranch doesn't have a summary screen for Pokemon, so reverse engineering a save you're after may not be without an external device. If you do have the values though, you can just straight put them into a save file as I note at 3:41. Pokemon Ranch Tools can spit out these details, but if you have Pokemon Ranch Tools, you may as well go for the convenience measure that achieves the exact same desired thing. There is very little difference between these two methods in terms of what's achieved.
Probably to prevent Pokedex cheesing. In Pokemon Stadium 2/GS, there was a similar lockout where you couldn't withdraw any other players Pokemon unless you already had 150 entries.
Huh, this was so interesting!! One question: does Pokémon Home not trip a hack check if a Pokémon from Gen 4 shows up in BDSP/SwSh without like, a “paper trail”? I vaguely remember every Pokémon having a Home ID that Home uses to track its movement between games
The Home Tracker is applied when entering Home, so no - this is why people got tripped at VGC 2022, as their Urshifus and Landorus-Ts had no Home Trackers.
@@PlaguevonKarmaohhh, so you need to put it into a DS game with the PkHex method? or is it just “deposit it and Home doesn’t have logic yet for making sure the Home tracker for a Pokemon that should come through bank has actually come through Bank”? Or am I misunderstanding?
The Home Tracker is applied UPON ENTERING HOME, so as long as it gets there somehow, through legitimate means, it's fine. There are no Home Trackers before Gen 8. Be it transfer, depositing, or otherwise; after all, depositing a Pokemon from Gen 8-9 is where a Home Tracker for that Pokemon comes from.
Wait, hold on, I still need some help.
