There’s something interesting about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU. From the Hulk, and Ant-Man to Spider-Man and Iron Man, scientists and speculative science play an enormous role in virtually every plot line. This defining characteristic actually traces back to the original comics. These characters were introduced in the throes of the Cold War, when nuclear science, radioactivity, and space travel became existentially important. As such, these radioactive heroes earn their stripes fighting Soviet communists and protecting the USA.

I bet this is also why the MCU was so successful. It reimagined the marvel heroes in contemporary conflicts (like iron man in the Middle East).
Exactly. Feige made the MCU entertaining, but it was also connected to the real world just enough to make it relatable
They did that in the comics constantly
And Captain America The Winter Soldier ( The topic of security vs privacy in a post 9/11 America)
a part of social programming, "show them what to think before they think for themselves."?
I just binge-watched all of this channel's videos. The production, the storytelling, the essays, it deserves way more than the 100K subs it has, I wish you the best of luck! and keep doing what you're doing you've earned a loyal subscriber.
Thanks, Omar! New video near the end of the month!
@@HistoryDose Awesome! Can't wait!
YES
Joe Rogan helped that out! Lol! Congrats man!
Agreed!
Great video as always. You can tell how the government investing in science had a domino effect on the focus on media for years. In the 50s, there was a focus on westerns until the early 60s. Then the focus was on Sci-Fi with movies (Star Wars/2001), tv (Star Trek/ The Twilight Zone), books (Dune), and comics. That was until the mid-80s when action movies became more prominent.
but star wars came out in 1977
@@SUPERRRSAIYANNNNN Yes. My point is the US government's investment in science in the 60s, created decades of Sci-fi trends in media.
Congrats on the only video I’ve ever seen that I’ll accept comic sans in
Now that’s one giant leap for mankind
I cannot get enough of this channel. The narration and storytelling are impeccable. Keep it up and thankyou!
I'm surprised to hear no mention of the Comics Code Authority, established in 1954, whose General Standards explicitly went after horror and crime comics and implicitly championed the superhero formula.
For instance:
- No comic magazine shall use the word horror or terror in its title.
- Scenes dealing with, or instruments associated with walking dead, torture, vampires and vampirism, ghouls, cannibalism, and werewolfism are prohibited.
- Restraint in the use of the word “crime” in titles or subtitles shall be exercised.
- In every instance good shall triumph over evil and the criminal punished for his misdeeds.
- Criminals shall not be presented so as to be rendered glamorous or to occupy a position which creates a desire for emulation.
- Policemen, judges, Government officials and respected institutions shall never be presented in such a way as to create disrespect for established authority.
- Crimes shall never be presented in such a way as to create sympathy for the criminal, to promote distrust of the forces of law and justice, or to inspire others with a desire to imitate criminals.
And so on.
@Awe Sean Superman made a marked change from attacking politicians and corrupt cops, to stopping bank robberies during this time.
I honestly feel like omitting this part made this video very different, as especially towards the end when they frame the paranoia about communism as somewhat justified, that paranoia of communism also spread as a boogeyman for anything “subversive” to current American society at the time. It saw a marked trend towards censorship and moral panic about other “communist” things such as lgbt, and civil rights movement. When Stan Lee talked about everything relating to communism, he was right, but only because they always pointed a finger at communism for anything they disliked.
@@bobettethedestroyerthebuil1034 the equivalent of that today is calling someone a racist homophobe so you can cancel them.
@@surov8182 Whatever you say man.
The comic code of conduct is why the 60s-70s sliver age of comics mainly dc were trash
You deserve so much more subscribers these videos are really well edited
I was the only one that knows about this and now you know when everyone knows now didn’t you know it’s also on Smithsonian
Good to sea the channel growing you guys deserve it without a doubt
Thank you very much! Appreciate it!
damn, if there never was a cold war, think of all the good movies that could have been made recently
If it didn't happen we never would've had Pixar. That was made from a studio bought off of George Lucas after Howard the duck bombed
@@brutongaster859 TRANSLATION: Yeah, some of the Marvel movies are good.
Think of all the good comics that wouldn't exist but your probably not a fan
Such a great channel man i can’t wait for more ! You don’t have a ton of videos but they are all like some of the topics I’m most interested in! Who thinks about native Americans meeting Vikings !?
Why isnt this more popular. Very interesting and factual.
RIP Stan Lee, what a legend, I miss him ;_;
Swear to god bro, I sound like you cracked a few cold ones with this man
Great video, once again!
Your production quality is god tier! Keep up the amazing work!
Low bar for gods innit
The moment I saw the USSR logo above the marvel title I knew shit was boutta go down
You should do a video about how the Jewish-American identity and struggles molded comic books and superheros. It's not well known that almost ALL of these creators were Jewish
If a person didn’t know, they should have been able to see by the looks of the super heroes… especially Superman

Awesome job 👍👍
Love this channel
Do you do your own editing? Incredible work.
We're a brotherly duo actually!
Chris is the history guy who does all the research and narration, and Joe (me on this account rn) is the artist and editor.
Any chance you can drop your song/sample link used at 4:20?
@@HistoryDose a dynamic duo of you will😉! Amazing work! New sub for sure.
Your VoiceOver is simply amazing.. ❤️
Great videos man, if you need ideas the history of the Dominican Republic has not really been put into good English videos yet. I would love to see the story of Enriquillo or Juan Pablo duarte done by you folks. I'll join a Patreon if you do lol
This is a very different video, but like the Moustache one, really a cool answer to a question of never thought.
Thanks! We occasionally dip back into the slick video essay style for less serious topics, similar to our Mustache and Suntanning episodes.
I love your channel. Similar to lemmino in terms of the wide variety of content and type of videos. Beautiful
Thanks! Lemmino is a huge inspiration for us
Fantastic content, I would love to see a video on the battle of Vienna the ottoman invasion of Europe.
Slight correction: the part showing the documentary you watched about fusion is incorrect as you showed a diagram of fission, not fusion
Fusion is to combine elements together to create a new more powerful element and to abosrb and use the energy of the combination, fission is to split an element into different components to harvest the energy of the separation
Hey History Dose, I thought it was super cool that you noticed the nuclear explosion on the front of SPHS.
Had to give a shout-out to my alma mater!
It’s a very fascinating phenomenon
Cant believe this level of high quality videos go unnoticed to the huge amount of youtube users
Great videos. I find it crazy my name Is Joe and my older brother is chris. You guys have good names and good videos.

bro really went to school with gumball and darwin lol
This video was so chill and enlightening. I didn't realize that superhero media has always been following societal trends this hard; sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Maybe people today who feel empowered by superhero movies will realize we're still being pandered to, just like in the old era comics.
This should have 1 million views
Thanks :) this one doesn't get much love!
I started collecting comics recently and just stumble upon this. Sometimes I’m so grateful to come across an old vintage nostalgic stuff
I need more!!
Historic hero's were noble or from gods.......Thor: "Why not both".
Remember that DC comics rewrote many of it's golden age heros into science-based characters first. Flash, Green Lantern and Hawkman were given this treatment. In fact the success of the team up comic Justice League made Marvel create the Fantastic Four.
The big difference is that most of the DC characters are not genius level scientists. Hal Jordan is a test pilot, Barry Allen is a detective, and Katar Hol is a cop. The only character who really fits the Marvel model is Ray Palmer.
I dont know why this video underperformed, its one of my favorite. Sucks to see you guys have to change the thumbnail so many times
Glad to you see you leading the cult following :)
"Cap! Stop! They're just kids!"
"They're communists, Bucky! Better dead than red!"
"This is wrong! Can you imagine what the public will say when they see Captain America execute children!?"
"The Vietcong murdered our friends! WERE HEROS BUCKY!!!! HEROOOOS!!!!!"
Dang, where is that from?

It worked too. We should revive this program to outpace China.
Odysseus was sort of a genius
Before it was called atlas it was called timely comics
The subtext from "the cult of the genius" that's been promoted since WW2 is a low-key message, "dont even try; you're hopeless idiots (by comparison)".

You have rouined history videos for me. When they dont look and sound like a minni documentry films I become discontent and move on. You must right this wrong by posting more to make up for the other channels I can no longer whach. Please, I beg you. Satiate my deep desire, nay need for more interesiting visually pleasing content. Your unwilling fan.
Haha sorry about that! Fingers crossed the algorithm will continue to bless us and we can eventually go full time--would love to make this channel our livelihood!
Stan Lee was a hack, you should have looked into Jack Kirby's life experience. He was the creative mind behind most of Marvel not Lee.
Bro, you need to change those fonts
Your best video by far is alexandre dummas one, the pctures, script and music in that one are phenomenal, it made me cry. I know youre trying to please the algorhytm with these types of videos but those ones seem to be your bread and butter
We try to vary the catalogue of videos quite a bit. This one was a return to our original, slick style for a video with a lighter tone (after several quite heavy ones), but rest assured more narrative, art-heavy ones are on deck!
So incredibly opinionated, but interesting.
Laughing in Fauci
Now the focus is LGTB and race division 😂😂😂
You’re so funny
Uh okay?
Don't forget: Capitalism helped the Mujahedeen, an already terrorist organisation, to get rid of the Soviets, the leader of the communist world, in 1979 during the reign of Jimmy Carter.
So to communism
No that's a myth
I'm here because of joe rogan
Thor is a mythological god and the x-men (sic) are mutants. They never fought commies, nor were they born of science. Fantastic Four fought the Hate Monger who was Hitler and the Avengers fought the Sons of the Serpent who were the comic book version of the KKK. You are giving a very skewed presentation of what Marvel was during the early '60's. Comics reflect the prevailing zeitgeist. Now, they are all sjw's.
I’m afraid you are mistaken here. Thor does indeed fight communists from the start (see “Journey into Mystery” #83-87). His mission is particularly on the nose-you’ll see him smashing planes adorned with hammers and sickles! #87 of these Thor comics is even called “Prisoner of the Reds!”
The point about the X-Men unfortunately hurts your case when considered in context. So heavily had the Marvel team relied on “scientific” origins, that Stan Lee admitted, "I couldn't have everybody bitten by a radioactive spider or exposed to a gamma ray explosion. And I took the cowardly way out. I said to myself, 'Why don't I just say they're mutants? They are born that way.'"
Of course the claim here isn’t that every single villain in these comics is from the Soviet bloc, but precisely that Marvel reflected the prevailing Cold War zeitgeist.
@@HistoryDose The point is Thor is not the product of science, nor are the X-Men--mutations are naturally occurring. I left out the most anti-science character of the 1960's era marvel universe that being Dr. Strange whose mastery of the "mystic arts" is antithetical to anything scientific. Thor may have had one bout with commies, but you can not draw the inference that the storylines in this title carried this theme beyond one story arc. What about the anti-nazi and anti racist themes of the FF's clash with the Hate-Monger and the Avengers clashes with the Sons of the Serpent? These villains were not communists by a long-shot. In any case, being anti-communists, or more accurately anti-Soviet Union, is not some sort of "Dark History" unless you condone a system responsible for literally millions of deaths from the Red Terror and the first famine in the Ukraine on through to the Holodomor and the Gulag. If Marvel could do their part to fight this system, that is not any kind of "Dark History" but reflects a goal just a laudable as Lee's anti-nazi and anti-Klan story lines.
Here because of joe rogan
Terrible thumbnail. It gives the impression that communists or that system of government promoted the development of comic book superheroes when the argument is that it was a response to these bad ideas.
