Uptick rule explained | Trading concept to know

- We've already talked about upticks and downticks. These concepts are universal and we have demonstrated them through GDAX. What I want to talk about in this video is regarding a technical piece of regulation that applies to stocks. Even though this topic doesn't directly apply to GDAX at the moment, I wanted to cover the concept to deepen our understanding of trading in general, and it is possible that a rule like the uptick rule could be added to GDAX in the future.

Hey Ben - You are welcome! Thank you for letting me know!
question regarding the uptick rule..., if I placed a short stop market order below the current price and it drops to that as it is going down and then my order becomes a market order which means I would get the “ask” price, with an uptick rule , would the broker fill it or reject? (Assuming it is an easy to borrow stock) or could it just not fill cuz the bid/ask have to actually both move up a cent? Also, I use Td in Canada trading is equity’s, my broker says there is the uptick rule but doesn’t say anything about the 10% drop.. does that mean I can’t short any stock at all unless it is moving up?
Thanks for all the educational videos and the great content. There is one thing I didn’t understand in this video:
If the uptick rule is in place there shouldnt be any down ticks (red) in the trade history because all takers are byers and you’re only allowed to sell as a maker. In the video you said that all down ticks are actual sellers. But if I understood you right there can’t be any down ticks because all sell side orders are makers. Could you explain how there can still be any down ticks in the trade history?
Hey alarjo - Good question. The rule applies to "short sellers", and so the distinction here is with "sellers" vs "short sellers".
Seller - A market participant who owns an asset and is attempting to sell it.
Short seller - A market participant who borrows an asset with intentions to sell it.
In the video, I used the word "actual sellers" to mean emphasize the fact that this type of seller actually owns the asset.
Let me know if this makes sense.
I would like to learn the basic concepts, rules and strategies of stocks trading too. Do you also have a tutorial series like this for US stocks? Or are there any tutorial videos you would recommend?
Hey Jason - I don't have anything I can recommend at the moment. However, all of what is covered here in this course also applies to stocks in general.
When is SSR lifted?
any website to see insider trading n websites recommendation?
If you are interested in stocks in the US, the insiders file with the SEC. Start here: www.sec.gov/reportspubs/investor-publications/investorpubsinsidertradingguidehtm.html
So the Uptick rule is the same thing as SSR (short sale restriction)?
It is a type of short sale restriction.
