Something so very hauntingly nostalgic about the era the moves… the words I can’t stop watching this cartoon & I’ve been searching for the actual video … THANKS for this upload
You smoking that good pack my brother this shit is ass compared to what is possible today. Looks cool just because it is old like a classic car or house, and like them, has long been obsolete in terms of production and marketability, used rarely only as an aesthetic
Do you have links to the original videos on the left? I type in St James Infirmary Blues live and a few different ones come up but none of them match that one
The second half of this video is from Betty Boop Snow White and the song is St. James Infirmary Blues, sung by Cab Calloway.. That movie holds a special place in my heart because they would show it every Saturday night before Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Strand Theater in San Francisco. This was in the 80s and be there every week when the doors opened at midnight. We all sung and clapped along with the movie, getting hyped up for what was to come.
1:41 They didn’t exclude the live part of this move because of its anatomical impossibility, they excluded it because Calloway actually did the move and it was to horrifying to be shown.
The stage crew watched in horror as Cab's features rapidly disappeared as his body took on a stout round shape with a large "20" embellishing the front of his now armless frame. His band kept playing as his legs elongated and weaved in and out of themselves, eventually hooking to the metal rafters above. Now the eldritch transformation had left him a horrible, fleshy figure in the vague shape of a gold chain. The song continued and the changes quickly revert themselves back to a human appearance, like a wind up toy resets it's motion, and his performance continues.
Max Fleischer invented the "Rotoscope"..it took live movements and you could trace to animation, very eery and lifelike, took a long time to draw as well and time being money, not used that often. This was before Disney. Not only that, you often didnt know what you would end up with. Thankfully these old classics are still with us today and Fleischer productions saw smooth black talent that fit his (adult) cartoon style and was not afraid to run with it in a Jim Crow time period. I think it was paramount movies that picked up and bought his early shorts before they went out on their own (out of the inkwell, Popeye the Sailor, Etc)
@@MsSwitchblade13 Fleischer started in '21 and Disney in '23. Most inventions in animation were by Disney (or Geroge Lucas LOL) which is why Fleischer's contribution is notable. IMO rotoscoping gives a really stiff appearance and poorly translates to a cartoon. However, this Betty Boop cartoon has some extremely natural rotoscoped movements. Perhaps this is because the cartoon character being rotoscoped from Calloway is so dissimilar to Calloway's appearance. He is fatter or skinnier, or his legs are way too short or way too long. Did this give the animator the freedom to create a cartoon while still exactly translating Cab Calloway's ridiculously smooth dancing onto an animation cell?
My favorite Cab Calloway move is when his head pops off and turns into a giant liquor bottle, then he pours his on brain fluid into a glass. One of the greatest dancers of all time for sure
Funnily enough he knew all style of dance in those days and was exceptionally good at it, he inspired the likes of James Brown which then inspired many more. His type of dancing should probably be in a top 10 these days in my opinion. Because he was an innovator of dance, I bet if a professional dancer nowadays was to watch him... they would be more than surprised.
Well you see, not many people know this, but Cab Calloway was actually an Eldritch being who transmorphed his flesh into the vague shape of a chain. The reason we can’t see this live is an unsolved mystery, as this part was scrubbed out of any recording and had the music edited over to make it seamless.
It's amazing how the old cartoonists were able to perfect a person's movements... Traditionally. CGI would not be around for fifty more years, but they put CGI to shame.
it's called animating on ones! I don't think it can be any more than 24fps since that is the source film, but it definitely stands out in a cartoon where a lot of other things are on twos (12fps) or threes (8fps!)
I just realized that iMonster says "where ever she may be" the same way he does. It's wild how new music draws inspiration from things almost 100 years old
Cab was nigh on to supernatural!! Moves! Voice! Melodic scat! Who better?! I love these Fleischer cartoons, but what-the-hell with the round bellied walrus and that weird long legged white ghost thing? Look at the films! Cab’s smooth as can be. Muscular and totally controlled! Nice lighting on these shoots to accentuate his movement and anatomy! He’s the best! Nobody like him! The cartoons are cute, but to hell with that walrus or hose legged ghost! Cab’s a one and only unique talent! Accept no diminishment! The real guy is the best!
Caio Ramirez WTF with YOU man??!! You always step on a guy’s groove? Constantly feel the need to throw cold water on a hot rant? Can’t just lay back and enjoy it? Nothing like being told to calm down to rile me up! I’m betting you’re the same.
See, old cartoons weren't always bouncy rubberhose people. Sometimes they were weird ass Cab Calloway rotoscopes.
True ²😂
I'm not entirely convinced Cab himself wasn't a bouncy rubber man.
@@AzhreiVep there's plenty of vids on him on YT to support the idea, thats fer sure
@@themadmallard one word... Cocaine
@@ericstapleton9577 Wasn't Cab strongly against drug use?
This is rotoscoping done right. The animators didn't just trace over the footage, but invented surreal visuals on top of the realistic movements.
Now I want to see a rotoscoped King Dice animation.
A good idea indeed.
Good idea dude
YOO
Yes😆
Someone made it.
I've always loved his movements and how I was hoping they were real and not just cartoons, I'm so glad I found this video
So that's how they made the characters move like Cab Calloway!!
Cab was smooth as hell…
Why is he more energetic than the cartoon that was based on him
I feel like that has a lot to do with the animation style of the time and the limited technologies they had to capture lifelike movement
That's a good question. And a good answer.
DUH He's a actually person not fake
They even combined different footage when rotoscoping and connected it neat
Cab....a genius dancing....Part of the great american heritage....
Something so very hauntingly nostalgic about the era the moves… the words I can’t stop watching this cartoon & I’ve been searching for the actual video … THANKS for this upload
Brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to put this comparison together. There simply isn’t enuf footage of the early Calloway, so this is fantastic.
Cab calloway was... is a legend, i remember when he passed away in 1994.
Cab Calloway is an icon
God Bless Cab Calloway... The joy that man has brought me, I cannot even tell u... But man am I thankful he existed...
This is so cool, but at the same time, old cartoons always feel so eerie 😅😅
old animation is precious and looks so much cooler than modern
Agreed!!!
Pov: you haven't watched cartoons in years
Yea it looks homemade and comforting well at least to me

This is what I call a Smooth Dancer! Gee!
Can Calloway is a legend, there will never be another like him
When you move like a rubber hose character, you become one.
Detroit: become cartoon
1:13 When I’m By myself at my House Please Believe I’m Doing these Dance Moves!!! Forget moves like Jagger, I’d Rather have The Moves Like Calloway.
Cab Calloway was one of the few humans who can move like a real life cartoon.
I love the description message
Alguns: Dança macabra
Eu: DANÇA FODA!!
he’s dances more cooler then the fornite dances
Still uncanny enough to freak me out more than any scary movie
Amazing rotoscope animation I did rotoscope animation at school last year
I fucking love this resurgence in love for The HiDeHo Man. Always been one of my favorites.
bro this is very beautiful
GHOSTMANE brought me here ,stunning performance
Hey thats dope bruh, I believe ghoste was paying homage to Cab with his videos
thatk Cab Calloway know he was BAD!!!!
This is a gem
*desperately looks up "how to rotoscope", "Can Calloway live", and "King Dice references"
And here I'm because of GHOSTMANE 😂
Gosh, these are terrifying for some reason
I love this soo much
If Cab Calloway can dance in a suit as an adult then I have no excuse as a spry teenager busting my knees trying to dance at homecoming
This reminds me of Cuphead, same type of animation.

Cab Calloway was the MAN.

Cab calloway was a big influence with cartoons. Til this day
It’s amazing to think that staggering around like a drunk zombie was considered a talented enough “dance” to painstakingly rotoscope into a cartoon.

Jajajajajaja XD
I stretch like that before every workout.
A little known fact about Calloway is that he started his career as an Eldritch abomination.
The stage crew watched in horror as Cab's features rapidly disappeared as his body took on a stout round shape with a large "20" embellishing the front of his now armless frame. Cab Calloway’s talent as an entertainer, be it sining, dancing, or otherwise, cannot be overstated.
So weird.
An animated character doing very very realistic movements
The first animal and the ghost scares
Uncaney valley
The animation is traced over the film.
That's rotoscoping
The walrus looks weird doing it,but the ghost/clown looks cool and smooth

Tell me im not the only one who tried to copy his dance moves at midnight while listening to the songs on the cartoon shorts
