- Just another day crossing jobs off my list. Folding Newsletters on the MBO. Strange tabbing issues when I move my martin Yale tabber to another area in the shop. Perfect Binding soft cover books. Talking about the nationwide toner shortage for Konica Minolta, Xerox and other printers. What are you doing to prepare for worst case scenario?

Hi. I worked for Xerox for 13 years as either tech support, sme, or colour analyst. I'm now technical accounts manager at a software startup. Something I want to share with you that I confirmed with EFI R&D before I left that dumpster. You can jinx a fiery if you apply a patch or let the autopatcher apply a patch that requires two reboots. Usually, its the huge 100+megs security patches. So if you want to be extra careful, patch auto all the way up to those huge patches, then run the sec pat separately, then continue with your autoupdate. Cheers :)

We found that out the hard way some years back with our first Fiery system. What a nightmare. The system we have now has done fine with updates but recently, for some weird reason, the license for the imposition software just suddenly ran out one day and it's supposed to be good for the entire 60 month lease. Long story short; it 2 weeks for Konica to hash it out with Fiery before we could get the license re-instated.
The toner production plant for KM in Japan had an explosion and was not allowed to start up again before they find the cause. I think now it’s almost back running but we going to experience this shortage for another two months. At least that is what KM tells me. We have a C6085, C2060 and a office bizhub 875 and for that last one there is no toner shortage. For the production machines we have toner left for maybe 1 month and then it is over and out…
I assumed there are several Konica owners around that are getting nervous!
Same experience here in Canada with our 6136s.

Same here in the UK, we had to have our Colour C6100 modded by KM to take toner from a different press to keep us going. But our BW 6136 is now on the last bottle. Been told that the production restarts in Japan for the production presses in November. Supplies should start arriving in December hopefully!
On the official KM press site are some notes about the incidents that happend in one of the toner factorys. The last one sid the production in one of them has restarted on 18/10 and the second plant will resume production on 8/11. This is good but it won‘t help as there are no capacities to ship the toner to the US or Europe before christmas.

I have been fighting the toner issue too, i had a stack for my C3080 and my 6120 but that is dwindling down. great channel keep up the great work.

@@justaprinter I am too. Down at the moment. Hoping toner for Monday. Might have to uncover my old abdick. And prepress equipment for some rush black and white forms. Cheaper then running on color copier. Stay strong. You have a great shop and business.
The toner shortage after the explosion in the factory hit us too. We ran out of toner and it is no toner in sight. I expect that we receive toner not before Februar. Hard times.
That would be bad. Many printers might have a few weeks off until this gets fixed.
Thanks for the heads up about the toner. We have a 2070 and were down to 2 boxes of each color. Our supplier didn't seem to flinch when we put in our order to stock up though.

We are going back to sheetfed. Just bought a 14x20 5 color. We are replacing a GTO 2 color with this. We have both digital and sheetfed in our shop, but for some jobs digital makes more sense. For our Konica Minolta 1070 that is self serviced I went to ebay for toner. You can still find them on there sometimes. Our other machine is under contract.
Yes, kind of wish I kept my ryobi 3404. But most of what I print are pre-collated books so offset won't work. I should pick up an offset press, I miss running them. :)
I updated my Fiery a month ago when I replaced the print controller HDD and operating system. That’s much better now. I stocked up on toner for my smaller Konica’s. My Accurio is still under service contract and haven’t had a issue getting toner (knock on wood). Some paper has been a couple weeks longer to get from the mill but I’m trying to be proactive rather than reactive. Hope everything gets back to normal soon.
Agreed! Normal is easier. I too have been stocking more supplies than normal just to make sure I have plenty.
On my first efi fiery I did ssd upgrage and maxed out memory to 16 gb worked like a charm
To save little toner, you can opt in Toner saving feature. It's in paper settings, change, expert adjustment. Output is a little brighter, but there are cases when you can use that. Regards.

Paper mills have been on allocation since September. Toner is back ordered till the end of time. Don’t try ti swap out other toners on those KM’s, you will be sorry. Times are getting weird!!!
Keeps it interesting for sure. Toner swapping would be last scenario and only if the print job was paying really well! LOL.
I run one of these KM engines inside a Mark Andy Digital Pro hybrid label press. We've been limited to 2 of each toner colour per week by our supplier. The shortage is definitely real. Great videos by the way!

Yes, I am beginning to realize its real.
Starting with CW 6(?) you can archive your jobs onto an external drive. We backed everything onto a 256gb flash drive. It was nice to have access to previous jobs. We could double check color settings or use the old jobs to troubleshoot issues.
Exactly what I used to do but my tech figure how to get a partition set up on the 4TB SSD I put in the controller so I archive to the partition now. Fiery is stingy when messing with their setup lol

We are currently refilling TN-619 with toner from TN-622 bottles. Working great on our C3070. Maybe you can get your hands on some of that :)

I have a Ricoh 9200, but it’s leased through Heidelberg. My Heidelberg rep assured me that although toner supplies are taking longer than normal they will not run out hell or high water. It’s scary out there right now though with paper and toner supplies going out. I feel you, Dan. Hope you can secure a good source somewhere.
I have a few tricks up my sleeve. But worst case scenario, I get some time off! :)

A machine that was gaining a lot of space on print shops here in Brasil is the RISO COMCOLOR machines, a Lot of people are buying those machines, idk if you guys in US know those machines but its an awesome option...
Yes, I have looked into them in the past. Might consider picking one up. It would be good for light coverage work and envelopes!
@@justaprinter I had a Risograph in my shop as it was used for single color work and printing on Paper bags. Very underrated machine that is extremely profitable and very efficient. The problem is the ink will never dry. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.... She was a bad Mofo....
@@justaprinter The newer ones are really good machines, the only thing that maybe will put you back for them is the fact that the machine wont print on coated papers, as an inkjet the ink wont dry on a coated paper, but, it is rated for 500.000 clicks a month, and run envelopes better than any laser printer...
What I did was buy all the TN621 those ones are compatible as they use the same developer, but now that one is also out of stock. We are a medium shop so we realized last year things could go sideways if we depended on a single brand so we opted to buy 4 Ricohs 9100, 4 Canon vp 8000, and the 4 konica 3080s, the scary thing now is that we weathered the paper allocation by buying a year worth of supply, but now there is no toner for almost all machines. We bought oem from china they also said they barely had didn't want to sell me more then 60 sets. Did the same with the rest of brands, but this will only last me until the end of the year. It's a scary thought having to close shop and sending people home when we have so much work to do.
Agree that it is wild. I also have so much to print but once out of toner, we sit and wait. Or try to figure something else out! Good luck! I'll keep you posted to what goes on in my neck of the woods.
Put an SSD on your Fiery, night and day! We’ve been having ridiculous shortages too. I do know some newer command workstations won’t work with my ricoh firmware so I haven’t updated yet. Xante seems to be ok on toner which could be a good alternative but not for high production unless maybe some envelopes…

@@justaprinter I work in a medium size print shop and I want to learn as much as I can about and I come across your channel which I think is great content. I currently learning about position for the 4 color press ,and we also do bunch of mailing service binding, news letters and such.
4over is always a great backup but they even are having some turntime issues.

Here is also missing toner. We use the Konica C8000 or C1100 and reload it for smaller equipment.
I don't think those machines use the toner/developer mix. So long term you might have problems.
It’s the perfect time for me to buy a new label press that uses toner form KM. 😬
I think you should be fine as long as you have a service contract. Either way, we will prevail! LOL.
hope you installed the patches in the right order after you upgraded the fiery. May have odd issues if you don't .

With the shipping container situation in California I wouldn't count on anything overseas getting here on time. From what I hear it's getting pretty bad. Sure wish a US based company would build a production machine here in the states including all the consumables.

I just saw your comment of reinstalling your EFI rip. I used to have more than 14 KM machines with EFI and on the bigger ones like the 7000, 8000, 1070 I changed the hard drives to SSD drives and you could really notice the difference. If ripping time is important to you I suggest you try it. Buy high quality SSD’s.

Hi, i have a small MAGNUM folding machine, any tip (if you can help) why i can't fold a small cover when i have full printed colour in the back of that same cover? Get stuck in the machine... When the back cover is white or some minor things printed it folds all the way... That issue happens with all with gsm paper, except normal paper (75 or 80 gsm)...
@Just A Printer. Good work on the folding/tabbing combined operation sir! You may already know this. When running the MBO second station for cross - folding, you should be able to reduce the speed so that it is at least 25% slower than the first station. If you consider that in your first fold to a 4pp. you have doubled the weight of your single sheet of paper, say 70g/m sq. to 140g/m sq. (sorry I am working in Metric). With heavier weight papers, you can afford to slow down the folding process and give the sheet more "rolling" time in the cross fold rollers. Try a sheet to sheet spacing of 50mm/2 inches on the second station. Let the machine do the work as the flow of copies will slow down. Then when you adjust the speed of the delivery table to suit, you clear the copies less frequently.It saves your shoe leather!
You worked out the correct placing of the steel ball in the cross fold sidelay! I used to tell my trainees to have only plastic balls directly in line where the sheet transferred from the first station, and 1 steel ball at/near the lead edge of the sheet exactly as you showed! The sheet is then pulled into the sidelay quickly and accurately. Did you set up the creasing device to position the cross fold?
Can you explain what your tabbing machine does, because I am not familiar with this piece of equipment. You and yours stay safe and well.
Thanks for the wisdom! No, I don't have a creaser installed on this folder. The tabber puts a sticker over the edge of the mail piece to keep it closed during mailing.

Maybe you can whip out the old 6500 if you run out of toner to get you thru these toner shortages.

@Wayne M Yes, I basically gave it away for $400 to someone starting up. Was just glad to see it go to someone who would appreciate it. LOL.
Konica production machine toner is set to resume manufacturing on November 18, 2021.

If your dealer or KM can't supply you with toner, contact the finance company and dealer and ask that your lease and service billing be paused until the dealer or manufacturer can perform.
I might need to consider that. I have an open order for toner with Konica for the past two weeks that has not shipped yet.
Dan. What's the model name for the MY Tabber? Do you ever run coated cover stock with it?
Its a Martin Yale EX5100 tabber. I have run coated material. Worked ok for me.

Definitely nervous about the toner supply. I was looking on Alibaba and didn't see oem just katun. Is that what you ordered?
It was on aliexpress. I forget it it was oem. Even if it wasnt oem I just wanted something on its way.
Greetings dear, it is advisable to put toner from another machine, example c8000 to me, the person who sold me the machine told me to use that toner and it lasts longer.
C8000 toner would work in a c6500 but not my current machines. I need to toner that has the ferrite mixed in.
I ran out if yellow for my c1070 and I used the toner from c8000. Used for about a week the yellow was beginning to start to print lighter. I received my original toner and is back to normal. If I had to continue using it, I believe would start to run into color matching issues.
@@justaprinter You could try plugging the developer drain temporarily and it would work like a c6000.
I'm located in germany and just realised the Toner shortage. My Xerox C75 is under service contract but even Xerox is not able to send me new Toner. Ordered middle of September, -maybe- next week they can send me one set of CMYK.
Don't want start to talk about paper shortage. :( Is this on topic in the US, too?
Yes, paper inventory at my local supplier is getting smaller and certain papers are out of stock. I am buying up what I can just in case!

Hello Dan, I need advice on what printing machine to buy that is affordable. This will be my first time for everything, I appreciate your pointers on this.
The info I have so far::: I was planning to buy a Brother HL-2270DW laser printer. I don’t know where to buy the cover papers (I’ve been trying to search no success yet.) I also don’t know what kind of paper to buy for the book.
I was thinking of getting the VEVOR Wireless Glue Book Binding Machine A4 Manual Hot.
I know there is probably a lot more I need and I would appreciate the advice you can give me on this.

I only know about production Konica Minolta machines. I'd reccomend you buy froma dealer who can fix the printer. Search for a local paper supplier or find another printer and ask them where they get their paper. You might need to have it mailed to you depending on where you are.

I am considering buying another machine also. Machines can’t stop running so things are getting desperate. Getting a lot of run around and LIES from Konica since I have contracts on several machines with them. I’ll be contacting my attorney also to see what my options are. They still expect you to pay the lease even though they can’t provide the toner to keep it running.
It‘s difficult to find machines right now here in Europe. At least used or refurbished machines are not available here in Europe. It‘s such a hugh mess.

As long as they are soft cover. Although Harry potter books are printed on huge web presses which makes it more affordable.

Why didn't you trim first then print and fold at the color machine finisher?
Because the artwork bled to the edge of the paper.
sir...I have a problem with konica 6000 printer.
it prints perfectly all internal test prints perfectly.
but when we print throw Fiery E - 100 fiery controller, it gives an error mezsage PRINT IN PROGRRSS and a white blank paper comes out and the printer hangs.

Had to buy them on China, placed amn order of more then 60 sets just to be sure, we have 4 3080s and we do a set every 2-3 days. So hopefully we are covered until there is toner back in the 🇺🇸.

I would not recommend it. People have told me that generic toner will cause problems. Stick with OEM.
Reuse your waste toner. It works

If you need black and white, my old reliable "Betty" has lots of toner capacity. Please don't put another brand toner into your machines, especially color. Even if in theory the generic is good toner, so many times the two different molecules will not work well. And the toner particle may not be the same size and the OEM toner. Toner is actually organically grown and the newer machines use much smaller particles that are supposed to give more detail and higher resolution. If you try the generic and find you have to flush out all four toner systems you will cry and/or spend a fortune doing so. Not worth it my friend.
Yes, that would be a last resort and only if I found someone else who was successful. I was curious how close the toner for Konica 12000 would be to my machines. I also have a service contract on my one 3070 so I might have to run that as long as Konica has toner.
Don't reccomend after market toner in high production machine. The algorithms. Is designed to mess with the output of images. Plus dirty toner will destroy every thing else. Tried it and failed
I agree that OEM is best for sure.
The reason of paper supply problem is that every printshop in the world is trying to make a year long paper backup.
Thats true, and paper mills slowed down last year, so its all coming to a head now.
You are not Using Copy Contract ?
One machine has a contract, my others are self-service. I'm concerned that even the contract machines might have trouble getting toner.

You can exchange de Y Laser for Cyan Laser and you will have the answer Laser or printer
