I've made it my goal to have no grass in my central illinois yard. I'm about 70% there. I can't even count the number of native plants I have. I love my yard and think it's the most beautiful in the neighborhood. It certainly has the most wildlife. The neighbors, however, hate it and have reported me to the city repeatedly. My mason bees are going to sting their children, the birds poo on their cars, I'm attracting squirrels that are going to chew through the siding on their homes, their dogs are going to get ticks from my yard. It goes on and on. Ignorance is the biggest problem we native plant lovers have to overcome. Well, that and apathy. Thanks for another amazing talk with Dr. Tallamy!
You're welcome! I think we need to gradually acclimate people back to what our landscapes are supposed to look like. In the suburbs of Chicago I did my FRONT yard in all natives. I showed intentionality with grass paths, flagstone walkways, bird bath, bench, etc. It looks like a garden, not a prairie. So far I have had all positive comments.
Homegrown national park is the best idea ever. How can this idea spread fast so that people actually understand it AND get excited about it on a grand scale??? I honestly have already created a beautiful and very biodiverse little place and am active in various community projects. Just now came across your video and want to thank you very much.
Thank you for watching and for the work you do! Our thoughts at Sag Moraine are that many people understand the "why" of native plants but they don't understand the "how". We are trying to fill that gap, especially for people who don't have much experience with landscaping or gardening.

the Q & A was my favorite part
I've heard of Doug Tallamy a few times before, but this presentation showed me WHY I've heard of him.
He's a fantastic speaker and author!

Offer the neighbor a native plant that they admire in your yard
Great idea!
