I have the same set I purchased from Jacksons also. Did you notice the pans were a little smaller than regular half pans? They seem a little shorter to me in height for some reason when I compare them to a regular half pan.

I have been using the transparent versions of raw sienna and burnt sienna for years and love them. They set better than any other brand in pans and are so easy to rewet. I also love the fact that the paint tubes don't get clogged and dirty easily because of the long shape.
Something to keep in mind, from my research, is that these use the Blue Wool Scale rather than ASTM for lightfastness, but they use the five stars to express it. Basically the stars equate to a blue wool rating which you can then compare to ASTM, if you want to get a better idea of what the stars mean. AFAIK both 4 and 5 stars would be comparable to I in ASTM.
I love Schmincke watercolors. Both their Horadam and their Akademie are amazing and I love working with them. I actually find that the Akademie and the Horadam are pretty similar, not like they are the same, but one can definitely tell that they come out of the same factory. I really adore them both. If only they stopped adding white to their naples yellow! That is one color that I prefer from other brands for said reason. But other than that, I have not had any reason to complain, ever. Definitely paints that I would recommend to anyone looking for high quality watercolors. And their gouaches are also amazing, I particularly like their HKS designer's gouache, but their Horadam gouache is super as well. If you like working with gouache, I would recommend you give those a try.
Very thorough review. Schmincke is the Porche of watercolor. I have never heard anything negative about them except cost. 💰💰💰💰💰 Perhaps I will order a dot card someday so I can try them.

So I am a big fan of Schmincke Horadam watercolors and like to collect their special edition sets that is why I call myself a Horadamoholic 😁 I like that the pans are poured and that they provide the same quality no matter what you choose, pans or tubes (unlike Sennelier where the pans sometimes have a different shade than the tube paints). It is easy to pour the paint in your own pans or palette and for most colors you see no difference, once again unlike Sennelier which are so sticky and unlike Daniel Smith which become quite hard. While I love their professional range, I am not a big fan of „Schmincke Akademie“ their student range. They only come in 24 colors and while there a vegan, they seem to lack some of the flow I like with Horadam. Maybe it is because of the oxgall which is only added to the Horadam range. Also, for a student range, Akademie is quite expensive and while Horadam is far away from being cheap, it is worth investing in from the start. I really like how easy it is to mix colors with Horadam, so a 12 pan set, maybe with Magenta and one of their „Cyan“like blues (the brochure mentions 2 which you could use but I can‘t remember them now) as add ones and you are good to go (says the person who is only about 20 colors away from completing the full color collection 😂)
You sound exactly like the store clerk, when I went to buy my first water color set at the age of 13. I told her I wanted to try some proper watercolors, not those school-grade stuff (Deckfarben, meh). She was like: 'Alright, Schmincke is the one for you to go. Forget the student line, they are way better than whatever you use in school but they still suck. Better get Horadam from the start.' I ended up with Magenta, Cadmium Yellow Light and Heliocerulian as my primary and mixing colors (thanks god that lady was not one of those blind Itten-red-blue-yellow fangirls), Light Ochre, VanDykebrown, Neutral Tint and Lampblack as convenience colors and Cadmium Red Dark cause it's a dope awesome color. Best spent birthday money ever.
Thanks for the review, Teoh. Being in Germany Schmincke has always been my go-to brand. I believe, I have a very old box with Akademie paints from my grandmother but I have not really used them lately. Other than that, I only have the Horadam paints and they are expensive here but worth it. I love DS, Sennelier and the few W&N paints I have but Schmincke will always be my favourite as they are the most consistent in quality over the decades. Plus I love their vibrancy and that most of them rewet very easily even if the paints are ancient. The only ones I could not recommend were a special set they came out with a while back containing a Lapis Lazuli, Green Porphyr and Red Opalite. Those were expensive 5 ml tubes and very disappointing. Some artists might not go for Schmincke because they are not vegan as they contain oxgall as their wetting agent. Recently, I have seen more special "super granulating" sets called Deep Sea, Glacier and Galaxy consisting of 5 paints each and each paint apparently containing 2 granulating pigments. I have not yet found the pigment information online to see what they actually are though. These paints come in 15 ml tubes and are sold exclusively at Gerstaecker here in Germany. I really wish I I had the € 190 to buy them all to test them!! *dreams* 😀🎨🖌
I think according to my swatches that schmincke is more matte ( some watercolors are slightly shiny) . They are very good for moody , soft florals and people and pets.
That's because Schmincke paint is very 'pure'. You have pigment and gum arabicum, end of story. Many companies add honey, glycerin and whatnot to their binder. That makes the paint smoother, more creamy and somewhat more vibrant, but also gives them this undesirable shine, when there is enough pigment in one place.

Like you, I've noticed that Schmincke half pans are shallower and the plastic thicker than the other brands I have. I can place 52 colors in my 48 half pan. The colors are exceptional and the texture very creamy. Also, even though they are very concentrated, I have the impression that they wear out faster than others brands I have. I reserve them for more serious projects. They blend very well and overlap well. Ideal for portraits, you can make delicate fades. When I want to experiment, I use cheaper but still professional brands.
Hi! When I use them with other brands I forget how well they rewet and end up putting way too much paint on my brush. Maybe you do the same ? I noticed that when I use only Schmincke paint I don't make that mistake. Maybe you do too?
I think it's worth noting that the cobalt blue you show in the beginning isn't a true cobalt blue. True cobalt blue is PB28, but since it's pretty toxic and harder to get a hold of, many manufacturers have switched to using PB74. It's not a bad colour and is very light fast, but it is decidedly darker and more violet compared to PB28. They do still produce true Cobalt blue as far as I know, which they have named Cobalt Blue light.
There are different variations of Cobalt Blue. PB74 is Cobalt Blue Deep or Cobalt Blue Dark. I love PB74 because the granulation can be really intense, especially the one from Kremer Pigments.
I have a tube of cobalt blue hue (series one) from Schmincke. The tube says PW4 + PB29, zinc white and ultramarine blue, which makes it semi-transparent. I do not like it for mixing, tends to slightly grey or "pastell" them, but bought it for sky washes. It is quite good for its purpose and not as chalky as others.

The german shop is called Gerstaecker, they offer quite a number of watercolor brands including Daniel Smith, Qor, Sennelier and of course Schmincke. They also have a online shop called kreativ.de, which is more for hobby artists and crafters, the shipping costs are lower. If you are located in Germany, the shop airbrush-city is a good place to look for Schmincke, the seller is also on ebay and Amazon, they are often the first shop that offers special edition sets.
Teoh, hi Can I ask how do you like Turners yellow? Other than the fact that it is semi opaque, which I know you don`t usually like, what do you think of other color properties, mixes and tone itself, which seems to me is kinda creamy and different to other yellows. I have both Schmincke Horadam and Akademie. I have 10 colors from Akademie (wanting to get the 24) and 3 colors from Horadam: Magenta PV42, Cobalt blue tone PW4, PB29 (wish it was a single pigmemt tho) and Cadmium Yellow Light PY35. I also used to have Ivory Black PBK9 but it got mold and I had to trow it away. I find them both very good quality, but I think the Horadam line is more transparent, has a more clean look to it and spreads a bit more. I live in Europe so both are quite accessible here. Akademie is the best Student grade paints I've ever used so far, they are way better than the W&N Cotman line for sure, all colors are vibrant (24 total) while in the cotman it's a hit or miss, or very vibrant or very weak.

This brand isn't that easy to get in Canada, or at least not where I am but I have tried them before and the pans are really nice. Its good to know the tubes do really well when put in pans.
Thanks Teoh. These are very vibrant paints. I would love them but they are very expensive here. I've tried ordering through Jackson Art but not successfully. Could have been a website problem but they say they don't get my order. Maybe their online ordering is not mobile devise compatible. I do not have a hard line computer.
If you want Schmincke then use the professional Horadam range from the start. But I suggest you buy a tin and choose the paints separately, not in a set. Schmincke put a lot of opaque colours in their sets, although there are so many transparent colours in their range. I don't know why they do this. However, if you like opaque watercolours, then choose a set.
Compared to Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolours (which I assume used to be called "Artists Watercolours") are these more brighter and vibrant or the same?

I have W&N Cotman and Schmincke Akademie, so on non-professional level I would say that Schmincke’s colours are indeed more vibrant. Also I love how creamy they are, so I think I will stick to them and move to Horadam gradually because of the choice of colours.
I started out with WN and switched to Daniel Smith because WN is almost 2x price of DS here in Singapore. Quality of paint from prominent companies like WN, DS, Schmincke, M Graham should be very similar.
@@xvslnx I think between a student grade of paints, the Schmincke's Akademie is the TOP! Especially their vibrant colours are incomparable to other student paints. The "problem" is their price - for the same price you can get some really good one professional paints. Horadam is perfect, but WN professional is also excellent. In this case, depends more on your preferences of colours and compare really just those exact colours.
I got a great sale price on a 48-pan set of Schminke watercolors from Jackson's a few years ago. I'd heard endless praise for this brand, but I was disappointed, The colors were weaker than all my other paints. The 48-pan was only different from the 36-pan by the addition of several useless blacks and whites, gold and silver, and a pan of gum arabic (Why?). Most of the blues looked the same. Schminke's Translucent Orange is gorgeous and vibrant, but I already owned this color in a tube. I don't use the set at all. Waste of money.
That pan of "gum arabic" is actually oxgall. You can take some on the brush and add it to your mixes, but you have to be super careful doing so, so it's usually better to just add some to your water.
@@teohyc Fabriano was better then as now...have Fabriano artistico too but i prefer Sennelier paper and Centenaire pure cotton. Never found such a perfect and cheap paper:-)

Hard pans? Cracks don't affect performance. Just use them normally

I don't like Turners Yellow because it's opaque. The selling point of opaque colours is opacity, e.g. they are better for covering over other colours.

I can’t say one is better. They are just different. S6 Lite is more value for money as you get more storage and the pen is included.

Jackson’s don’t shop outside EU anymore due to trade agreements ? Any other source of reasonably priced professional / artist grade paints in Daniel Smith or Winsor &Newton?
This brand isn't that easy to get in Canada, or at least not where I am but I have tried them before and the pans are really nice. Its good to know the tubes do really well when put in pans.
If you’re in Canada, you can get paint made in USA. Eg Daniel Smith, M Graham

I only have their cobalt green pure and I like it it works. Have yet to try other colors from their lineup...
Thanks Teoh. These are very vibrant paints. I would love them but they are very expensive here. I've tried ordering through Jackson Art but not successfully. Could have been a website problem but they say they don't get my order. Maybe their online ordering is not mobile devise compatible. I do not have a hard line computer.

I would love to try schmincke but sadly is expansive for me. For now i only able to use alpha colours
Would you recommend Schmincke for a beginner or perhaps another brand?
It's good for beginners if you have the budget. Note they have student grade Akademie and artist grade paint.
If you want Schmincke then use the professional Horadam range from the start. But I suggest you buy a tin and choose the paints separately, not in a set. Schmincke put a lot of opaque colours in their sets, although there are so many transparent colours in their range. I don't know why they do this. However, if you like opaque watercolours, then choose a set.
Compared to Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolours (which I assume used to be called "Artists Watercolours") are these more brighter and vibrant or the same?

@@teohyc "Should"? haha! Okay... I got the impression from other artists online that Schmincke were more vibrant but without having any myself I can't tell.
I have W&N Cotman and Schmincke Akademie, so on non-professional level I would say that Schmincke’s colours are indeed more vibrant. Also I love how creamy they are, so I think I will stick to them and move to Horadam gradually because of the choice of colours.
I started out with WN and switched to Daniel Smith because WN is almost 2x price of DS here in Singapore. Quality of paint from prominent companies like WN, DS, Schmincke, M Graham should be very similar.
@@xvslnx I think between a student grade of paints, the Schmincke's Akademie is the TOP! Especially their vibrant colours are incomparable to other student paints. The "problem" is their price - for the same price you can get some really good one professional paints.
Horadam is perfect, but WN professional is also excellent. In this case, depends more on your preferences of colours and compare really just those exact colours.

Scrape up the moldy bits, dispose of them properly, and you should be good.
Why are you saying Schmincker? It’s Schmincke
I got a great sale price on a 48-pan set of Schminke watercolors from Jackson's a few years ago. I'd heard endless praise for this brand, but I was disappointed, The colors were weaker than all my other paints. The 48-pan was only different from the 36-pan by the addition of several useless blacks and whites, gold and silver, and a pan of gum arabic (Why?). Most of the blues looked the same. Schminke's Translucent Orange is gorgeous and vibrant, but I already owned this color in a tube. I don't use the set at all. Waste of money.
That pan of "gum arabic" is actually oxgall. You can take some on the brush and add it to your mixes, but you have to be super careful doing so, so it's usually better to just add some to your water.

The square paper is Fluid easy block, sketchbook is made with Indigo ArtPapers and swatches with Fabriano Artistico
@@teohyc Fabriano was better then as now...have Fabriano artistico too but i prefer Sennelier paper and Centenaire pure cotton. Never found such a perfect and cheap paper:-)
