This is so funny. Michigan did this to me! I was accepted at Harvard, Chicago and Dartmouth and Michigan rejected me. And was a Michigan in-state student!!

In state? Like your parents pay Michigan taxes? That is absurd. UM exists to educate people from the state

@@21stcenturydadd Yup. I grew up in Michigan and graduated from a public high school. I feel fairly certain that they rejected me before I rejected them. This was before the common app and they asked what other schools I was applying to. I foolishly told the truth and got a nice rejection for my honesty.

Ditto. Someone I know was accepted at MIT, Harvard, UPenn, UC-Berkeley , Harvey Mudd, Olin College of Engineering, RPI, Case Western, OSU and Georgia Tech Honors. That person was also waitlisted by Cornell, Princeton and Dartmouth. And then got waitlisted by UMich. Go figure!!! Insane, Can even fathom what their logic or reasoning is. Maybe they figured out that the person was way too over qualified and will not ever show up at UMich.🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I agree with you about Case is not YOI from my son’s experience. Another comment - they are not need blind and want your demonstrated interest.

The counselors at my sons' high school (outside of Chicago) first told us about YOI for Michigan. Crazy. But we could see the stats on Naviance where Michigan was rejecting or waitlisting students that had the highest GPA and ACT/SAT scores. They were admitting students from the same high school that had lower GPA and scores. It was eye-opening.

This happened with us at Elon. My oldest was waitlisted with a 4.0 unweighted GPA/4.9 weighted, IB Diploma, strong essays. My second child also had a 4.0/4.94 weighted, but AP classes and she was accepted but got no merit. But then invited to interview for honors. I think they were testing her interest. She actually was very interested but she was turned off by lesser students getting scholarships right off the bat. She ended up getting a complete full ride at a more competitive school.

If Elon is managing their yield, they’re doing it wrong. They admit 2/3 of applicants and only get 13% of the ones they offer

This makes sense now. My son wasn't accepted to his dream school which seemed to be his safety. He's currently a freshman at a much more selective school and his fellow students are shocked to hear this.

Encouraging students asking that hard question to an admission officer is a bad idea. Meister feels like he needs that data point, students don’t.

In that situation, why would they not waitlist him and then pluck him off if he demonstrated his interest

My daughter was waitlisted by a few schools, but she eventually got into her dream school, which was far more selective and prestigious. She even received a likely letter. I believe that the admissions officers at these schools did an excellent job in identifying her genuine interest and passion for this school, which ultimately led to her acceptance.

Would it be fair to characterize Tufts as a YOI (trademark pending) school? Seems like it.

Unless a college explicitly states that it's not a YOI, you should consider it a YOI. Good luck.

Idk. Did this person do anything to demonstrate interest in Umich? If they couldn't even be bother with doing a virtual tour then who is to blame?

I lost you when you started talking about Case Western is NOT yield obsessed. Among parents, Case Western is known as the epitome of being yield obsessed, probably because they are a small institution. Many parents have advised me to visit Case in person because they say that if you visit Case Western, you are far far more likely to get in and likely with a good merit aid. If you are far away like in the Bay Area, where it is less likely you may go to Case as opposed to other colleges on your list, they try to change your EA application to ED2. Then they defer you to RD even if you fit their profile easily - from RD they defer you to waitlist and they make you write every week (or maybe 2 weeks) that you are still interested in them. If you end up writing enough of those, I think they will likely admit you but most students with those good profiles end up having better options than Case - and hence never follow up.

When he said the two schools, I immediately said “Case is the YOI!!” But Tulane is the ultimate YOI.

Idk when the story takes place but putting Umich (even if it’s a state school) as a SAFETY school seems a bit naive. Like yes, these schools might not have acceptance rates below 10%, but Michigan as an absolutely guaranteed acceptance… yikes. I think a lot of kids with high sat scores and good records feel entitled to be accepted into every school over a certain acceptance rate, but in reality *no one* is guaranteed an acceptance anywhere, especially at a selective institution.
*Unless you live in a state like Texas with a literal automatic admissions program for high performing residents

    • @Yhowdyy

Not saying yield rejection could NEVER happen or hasn’t happened before, but I think a good amount of ‘yield rejection’ cases are from students who underestimated the admission standards of a certain school and don’t want to admit that they couldnt not get a spot without some huge conspiracy against students like them or can’t admit that no part of the us college admissions process is objectively fair
