I was offer this brand when I was a buyer in the Hi Fi trade. They were incredibly good tapes. I liked the chrome ones the best and your right they were made by BASF which was a brand I stocked.
The irony was that I could buy the BAF tapes in bulk and get a much better price than buying another brand. Almost every rep you met had another brand of tape to offer you and the market was becoming flooded with lots of cheap brands that spoilt the market for other brands like Tudor. Market loyalty was another factor. I would have people come in and ask for several boxes in one go and if you suggested an alternative most people would not listen. People got caught up in the hype which made it hard for even companies like Ampex to make inroads to the UK market.

I was always a fan of Boots own-brand cassettes. Before they went with Maxell stock in the late 80s, they used a mystery Swiss supplier for their tape stock, with distinct dark grey hubs. Both the type I and type II tapes bore the IEC logo, but I never knew who really made them.

    • @CassetteComeback

ICM in Switzerland. Very decent. They also made Saisho cassettes for Dixons at one point.

@@CassetteComeback ...but weren't ICM just a loader & shell+hub manufacturer? Basf or Agfa (more likely) inside those Saishos and Boots? Or did they make their own tape in the end?

Hi Tony, these Tudor cassettes look like they were made by Dessauer Magnetband GmbH from East Germany. The company was known as ORWO before becoming Dessauer Magnetband GmbH. It was then acquired by Turkish Raks. ORWO had been producing quite decent Cr (pure Chrome) tape that was used in their own cassettes as well as some cassettes made e.g. in the USSR. So, I guess it is not BASF, but might well be very good value for money anyways. If you google for Dessauer Magnetband GmbH pics - there are cassettes with these kind of hubs and shells bearing their own name. thanks for the video! great job.

    • @CassetteComeback
      @CassetteComeback  5 років тому +2

Cheers. The CR Type 2 have identical hubs to the 1982 BASF CEII, which is what made me make the link. I've looked at Dessauer Magnetband GmbH pics, but I'm not seeing any with these exact hubs.

    • @ychesnokov
      @ychesnokov 5 років тому +1

@@CassetteComeback yeah, the hubs design for sure has BASF as origin, but they might be even having some cooperation with them in the early 90s.. here are some pics and the story (in German) forum2.magnetofon.de/board13-verst%C3%A4rker-phono-decks/board61-cassetten-decks/13453-cassetten-sch%C3%A4tze-teil-7/index19.html

@@ychesnokov Pls pardon me for interrupting 😅 but there have been different theories.
Firstly. I wouldn't count too much on brand acquisitions, albeit they were indeed very important. It could really have been Dessauer, could have been late Magna (loaded with Grade A++ ORWO/Dessauer), ...could have been a duplicator job. Lithuania (дратвути 🤗) had some prominent music labels dash duplicators in the 90s who unanimously wound BASF tape into smooth clear shells (which, closer to the turn of the millenium, transformed into a patterned Kolormagnetics affair with distinguishing "A" and "B" markings, but here's one of the older make: img.discogs.com/857Lw33B_r76Hn1Ceh3DgfEhVXQ=/fit-in/600x397/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-6965929-1430578857-7474.jpeg.jpg ). Spain probably did that as well.
But I learned from someone who comes from Belarus that our duplicator chaps also sold blanks 😶: forum.onliner.by/viewtopic.php?t=6525932&start=24500#p104053068
Not news for many, 100% news for me.
Acme (=/=AcmeHK!), another Lithuanian blank media maker-electronics relabeler-current entertainment label, is one more prime example... except that it was a blend of BASF, Emtec and Chinese shells with dotted hubs and red clips which, sorry Tony 😶, are a bit too shoddily made to qualify as SKC. They could be coming from Forward Electronics of Taiwan who made plastic components for A LOT of tape makers, see here: www.ez647.sk/cc/philipsi/b/philips_cdone9098ac.jpg www.ez647.sk/cc/panasonici/b/panasonic_ep6095c.jpg www.ez647.sk/cc/konicai/b/konica_xri9093jc.jpg www.ez647.sk/cc/emteci/b/emtec_fei9002c.jpg www.ez647.sk/cc/basfi/b/sound.jpg
Mind the clips, they're practically identical.
Now when it comes to the relation of Emtec, RAKS and SKC... it's a weird complicated mess IMO. There have been claims that late budget RAKSes have bottom-of-the-bin SKC tape inside. One could say Emtec/late BASF tape (especially their very last FeCo offerings) could also be SKC. Some say the design and plastic parts of Emtecs were a result of the Korean KOHAP handover. Some say it's not KOHAP but SKC. Some say it's also late RAKS, which in its turn, is also SKC. It's such a convoluted story... as they say, "what is this I don't even" 😓
And on the topic of Spanish makers: www.tapeheads.net/showpost.php?p=775331653&postcount=13
I don't wanna point fingers (or put words in mouths) at anyone and especially Martin who's behind the post (он не истина в последней инстанции и сам в этом признаётся 😉), good sir has contributed *A LOT* to the Web database of cassette history and is doing his own research. But Spain *might* have had their own tape.
Shortly speaking, it all comes out to the fact that BASF tape was *ubiquitous* among 90s duplicators. On the other hand... there were quite a few European manufacturers around that time. ECP with its "BASF tape technology", AGFA shell heritage and MK legacy* 😆 comes to mind first, but there were also all kinds of Magnas, Permatons, Dessauers/Lazers/De-Was/SKs with all kinds of tape (ORWO formulations? New formulas and tape coated at the former ORWO place in Dessau? SKC bulk orders? BASF? Hong Kong? Seems like it was a rollercoaster) ...don't forget the weird Italian animal called Magnex (Scotch factory? Sony plant? Own formulas?) In the end, it all again comes to 2 things:
      1) Some Euro brands are still unexplored. They are items of collectible value but no one really unwraps one, recalls what they sounded like back then, 25-35 years ago, or reports their findings on the Web (as if they were obliged to 😄)
      2) The other brands either have marvellous-sounding, or at least decent, tape or they are loaded with Type 0.
(And it's not "shortly" anymore 😜)
(And maybe the quality *IS* the top priority thing? Forget the tape anthology shenanigans and focus on the rust? B-but IMO it's an interesting kind of research 😅)
*Были жалобы, что ECP начали с ленты BASF, продолжили со своими басфовскими наработками, а закончили с сыпящимся низкокачественным чудом в лучших традициях Союза 😄 Не проверял, но в каждой шутке есть доля правды

Really interesting tape. Here in the US most of what we had to buy was either the usual suspects like Sony, Maxell, Memorex and Fuji and totally cheap stuff like Certron and the store brands.
I agree with you that this is the time to buy if you're in it for the long haul. I'm personally embracing the secondhand market as I can still occasionally find collections of music I don't want to listen to and will wipe it and replace it with my own recordings.

I'll be honest, I'm a TDK fan, not the kind that only gets TDK tho, but for the same price, I'll always choose TDK over others. The funny thing is, that I mostly find just TDK xD
In thrift stores, I still find plenty of brand new tapes, the last 2 years, I probably added 60 new tapes and 15 of those where type II (mostly TDK SA). Usually cost me like 20-30¢ per tape, so this hobby is really inexpensive to me. I got a Luxman K-111 for 3$ 3 years ago at a garage sell, my best buy yet, never had a deck that sounded so good.
Been taping since... well always. Was born in 95, so when I was a child, I was taping and I just never stoped.

A long time ago, in the nineties, 95% of people in Poland bought TDK, SONY and BASF cassettes. I then chose Raks, SKC, Maxell and Fuji. I've never been a fan of one or two brands. I really appreciated Raks and That's tapes. It was only from your movies that I learned that Taiyo Yuden is responsible for the latter company. This in itself explains the excellent quality of these tapes. Now there is no such choice as it used to be, but you can still own enough good Fuji cassettes (K2 or even Z2) as well as Maxell XL-II or SKC LX for little money. New tapes, from new producers (especially American ones), are saddly has poor quality and more like sandpaper than a magnetic carrier. I do not buy such tapes, but what Korean companies release is still sensible and still maintains a reasonable level of quality, so from time to time I allow myself the luxury of buying a new cassette. Is a pity to tire the old ones :).

  • @tarstarkusz
    @tarstarkusz 5 років тому

This tape sounded quieter than the source. I usually cannot hear any difference at all between the source and the recording when you switch back and forth, but I could hear a difference on this tape. It might have just been volume though.
To the best of my recollection, pretty much all pre-recorded tapes were type I. I have a bunch of tapes I made in the late 90s on Nicorette Gum tapes that were included in the gum packs. They all still sound pretty good. A lot of them, from what I recall, were made from mp3 files I downloaded off the internet. I burned them to CD and then taped them for use in the car, along with recordings off of records. Ah, the good old days...

@ungratefulmetalpansy And as for cassettes, there are some "paradise" merchants on Ebay with bargain pricing, interestingly most of them come from only several countries - and I'm not talking the U.S. (however cheap the price tag may be on a job lot from the States, shipping+customs taxes very often eats up double the original pricing). Not all hope is lost.

Interesting review. I'm with you that the Tudor CR could be a BASF chrome. For the HF tape, which looks a bit like the BASF LH-D tape, there is also another possibility: It could be the same tape which was used by Philips and PDM for their FSX and FE/FE-X models, the ones that came in Swiss ICM shells. The entry level model Tudor DS is probably no BASF, and I have not yet found a matching counterpart from a known tape manufacturer.
Now to the shells and hubs. While the hubs are clearly a BASF design, they can also come from a third party manufacturer. Even BASF did not make all of the mechanical parts in-house. The clear shells used by these Tudor and late Socimag cassettes are made in Spain. Inside some of them, you can spot the embossed word INVERHOUSE, sometimes only IH, sometimes there is nothing.
To our Spanish friends: Did Tudor make tape themselves, or did they have the cassettes OEM made/assembled by Socimag? I only know of Tudor being a battery company.
Oh, I need to make some test recordings on my Tudor cassettes, maybe I can find out more that way...
In Sweden, I have also found Tudor cassettes from the 70's, but these were coming from Pyral instead!

Hi, Tony! Good thing is that people getting to know some not very famous cassette manufacturers. Recently I purchased from Russian internet auction seller TUDOR CR 90 tape and also SOCIMAG, and also I bought from him a TUDOR DS 90 Type I cassette. I just wonder, how good TUDOR DS would appear to be. Do you know anything about TUDOR DS? (It says "Dynamic Ferro", so I expect it to be probably close to BASF Ferro Extra I. When it will be shipped to me, I will try to record on it. Currently I have very good Soviet deck as I told you, but it is two-headed only and has only bias adjustment screw under the cassette door. But I like this deck, since after professional repair, tuning and capacitor replacement it can get decent results from almost any cassette I tried to record on it. So, if you wonder, I can let you know how Tudor DS did perform on my deck. By the way, since nobody in Russia knows about TUDOR and SOCIMAG, the price for these tapes from that guy was very reasonable, TUDOR CR was even cheaper, for example, then some BASF Type I tapes.

I made the comparison test with 1997 TDK D tape, and what can I tell you& Tudor DS got better bas response, then TDK D, as of my ears, but highs are more crisp in TDK D, but not very significantly. Tudor DS takes +3 level easily, without any distortion, and doesn't give level loss. During playback lelel was pretty much the same as during recording. I didn't experiment with bias adjustment, since my friend, who calibrated the deck, told me better not to touch it. So I would recommend this cassette as good ferric tape.

Audio cassettes have a certain sound about them, that modern digital is missing. This is a main reason people come back to them, along with their aesthetics. Video tapes don't have that character and are bettered in every way by DVD, let alone Blu-Ray.

Would be interesting to know whether the DS is above or below the HF in the lineup 😏
And Spanish tapes on the whole, it appears, are a treasure. Heck, maybe even old LN (pre-IEC low-noise-not-so-high-output) formulations are a treasure, unless you're dealing with reslitted video tape - and if the equipment allows you to compensate for miscalibration. Yes they tended to saturate earlier (if I'm not mistaken) but... the noise floor was also lower, again IIRC. In short: why not try everything you get hold of?.. I don't think a tape can damage your deck SO badly you'll want to stay away from anything excluding TDK and Maxell 🙂

Great video and a great channel - I've learned a lot from watching and listening to you - cheers :) On a similar note to the one you made in the video: for those on the diametrically-opposite end of the fanboy spectrum who don't care what you record on as long as the end result sounds good, keep an eye open for "The Classical Collection" - it was a periodical that ran in the early 90's published by Orbis that came with a 60+ minute cassette. I was given a whole heap of them by someone on Freecycle who was just having a clear-out. The performances are basic (Point Classics, need I say more) and the sound quality is pathetic... but it's BASF pure chrome tape inside; Crayola smell and all :) The shells are built in such a way that it only takes a set of pliers to create a Type II notch; tape up the write-protect hole, and voila! A 60-minute pure chrome BASF saved from someone's dustbin.

Been looking for the Tudor brand in the German brands register (on the off chance with BASF and AGFA both being German companies) I found something else instead. register.dpma.de/DPMAregister/marke/registerIR?AKZ=603193&CURSOR=8
The name on the cassettes shows an identical brand logo to the one registered by a Spanish battery manufacturer. So they were possibly produced for the Spanish market?

Indeed, they were for the Spanish market, hence why they're relatively unknown outside of Spain.

I’ve never seen the Tudor HF before. Sony did the HF cassettes back in the mid to late 1980’s right up until the 2000’s, but Tudor took a stab at the HF name, because Sony already did the HF name on cassettes.

i do wonder, if you could experiment with double speed recording and see if or how much quality gain you would get.
i know about 1 4 track cassette recorder that does 2x recording, but i guess this isnt common for consumer recorders/players since it will turn a 90min to a 45 min cassette.

It is better quality, hence why it was done speed for "pro" application. There are some double speed consumer decks out there, but they're not common.

@@CassetteComeback one more thing and I'm finally shutting up 😄: it'd be nice to check the Saisho tape colour. If I'm not mistaken, dark "rich brown" = BASF after the Agfa acquisition; rusty brown = AGFA or earlier BASF, or late BASF "Ferro Standard" (a grade below Extra, possibly just an older variant); very rusty, almost orange, brick coloured brown = Emtec; and milky (sorta like whitened) light brown (I ♥ that colour) = another kind of AGFA. There may be errors.

I actually got some 20 minute BASF Reference Maxima 2 for another project, but did make a calibration tape with one. 400hz @0db on one side for level / speed (as the dragon is quartz locked) and 10khz @-6 for azimuth on the other. Don't know about selling alignment cassettes though, it's fine for my own use, but I don't know whether I could "stand by" them for others.

He was like “But But, They got record company’s & movies. Had to tell him “Yeah! And who pays for music anymore.” (This was several years ago) & their movie studios only big Products were their back catalog. Same as the record co. He couldn’t believe when I told him that Sony was selling off other properties that they Had, to lessen their profit loss. The only thing that they had that was really producing revenue for them was PlayStation. He didn’t want to believe any of this b/c of his blind fanboyisom!

The same products allso but for a price less, called Aristona and more less was Erres. So why not that BASF does have a wide tape and the inner side is called BASF and the outer site called Tudor? I've just orderd some cassettes but, I'm thinking to order some off those aswell just to try out.
