  • I'm always looking for new ways to capture great wildlife images, and in this video I'll be starting my journey into camera trapping. It's only natural to want to expand and improve your portfolio and hopefully this new discipline will help in that respect!
We're going to have a crack at camera trapping, so armed with my Camtraptions setup and a steep learning curve we're going to attempt to capture some great wildlife images after dark.
Join me in this first episode as we talk about the merits of this form of photography and take a closer look at the gear that were going to be using.

You can never have too much kit Simon, even the walkie talkies (even though they do back chat 😏). I’ve got 5 or 6 and use them when we go out as a group - much easier than using mobiles. Now then lad, fingers crossed for the move, that's the most important thing. Trail cams are excellent, if low res, and our ability to site them in the wrong place is legendary. We have two, and I'll call them "Nigel" and "Giles" here, so as to avoid them suffering social media blowback and abuse. They do their best. Good luck, J&A&B&T.

Brilliant that Simon 👏. Dead chuffed you've decided to do this. Looking forward to the future vlogs. I've started putting trail cams out in July. I've had some great results 4 badgers all at the same time, foxes ,roe dear, mice ,rats and even had a barn owl. Not bad considering I live in a built up area, between Bolton and Bury. I look forward to learning from you over the next few months, in order to take me to the next level 👍. Ps if someone does nick my gear, then it all over. I wouldn't continue leaving gear out. The way of the world I suppose. Anyhow good luck with yours, I'm sure you'll get some brilliant footage 👍

Cracking video Simon! I’m finding myself pretty uninspired photographically, totally fed up with cut and paste paid hide photos and inconsiderate photographers swarming en mass with no regard for animal welfare (I think having my local short eared owl location broadcast nationwide broke me!) so I’ve started looking into wide angle photography of more overlooked species.
Can’t justify the financial outlay of a camera trap setup but I’m finding that remote triggering my camera from a short distance gives some of the results of daytime camera trapping with the buzz of in person photography! Early days yet, might try and move over to using sensors next year but as I’m on public land there’s always more risk of the gear wandering off…

Totally agree Joshua, I know exactly what you mean. Can't beat getting out there on your own. So much more inspiring and rewarding. Not sure what system you use but I'll be showing the Nikon Autocapture feature which acts as a camera trap. Love the look of short focal length wildlife shots. ATB, Si

Great video as always Simon. I have the wilderness bundle myself and its a steep learning curve but many ups and down so its fascinating stuff. A little tip i learned along the way mate is you will notice at times you will get condensation on the housing glass so putting a little bag of silica gel solved that for me or a carbon tablet, i believe camtraptions have brought out a heated patch too. All the best in your future cam trapping adventures.
