    These calculators existed in that era is the reason we have modern devices in current era, fine piece of engineering.

    Best explanation I've seen of the Curta thus far. Good job! What got me interested in looking at this video is that I learned that the first computers performed multiplication and division in exactly this kind of way. They could not do it as a single operation. They would do addition or subtraction multiple times. I supposed modern computers may work that way too.
    While people may laugh at the old fashion nature of these mechanical calculators today, they are excellent tools in teaching people how machines perform mathematical operations. What is going on is very visible. When it is electronic, you don't see the repeated operations going on. It is invisible to the user.

      That’s a fine observation. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! R.R.

      Modern computers work the same way indeed.

    Why the heck would you show me this Ricky ... Now I have to go out and find one ... fantastic amazing little machine.
    Thanks for sharing !!

    Send the new Intern out for a box of Curta batteries...

    How I wish that I had one of these as a kid (before pocket calculators had been invented)!

    Incredible yet so simple at the same time. It's all about adding and subtracting but in orders of magnitude. Very cool to work out what's going on :)

      the use is really quite simple. the engineering behind the mechanism on the inside on the other hand is mindblowing. the creator of this thing must have been insane.

      They still are if you ask me. Roots are so sweet to just calculate by looking at a plastic stick!

    Thanks. Great tutorial. I just got a Type II, so I followed along. These are amazing machines.

    I like things like that, I know Ricky Royal hates electronics, here is a good idea R R start review none electronics.

    По конструкции и способу счета похож на калькулятор Одднера. Только у Одднера были колеса, а здесь валы...

      yes, I have an Odhner calculator too; it’s a beauty but very heavy!

    Very very nice video, Thanks!
    Btw. your Curta definately needs a good service. I can see you need to put in WAY too much effort to spin the handle. And the rattling noise it makes sounds scary to me.
    I've got both my type I and II serviced a few years ago and the difference in operating ease is unbelievable. These machines probably aren't serviced ever in their lifetime so almost all of them need a cleaning and good quality oil. Oil dries out.
    Good luck!

    nice machine , but can quite understand why (after WW 2 ) the design fell out of favor.
    (hint: it's shape resembles something, that reset lever looks like a safety pin for a Gre....)

      Production only started after WW2, and the machine was pretty popular, from what I hear.

    what happens if you divide by 9

  • @johncherry108
    @johncherry108 17 днів тому +1

    Your examples of multiplication were too trivial. Try 14593 x 846. Give it a go...

    • @BoxofDelights
      @BoxofDelights  16 днів тому +1

      it's actually very simple with the Curta. You put 14593 in the register, then shift to the 100 spot and turn 8 times, then to the ten spot and turn 4 times, then to the 1 spot and turn 6 times. The answer has been said countless times...

    This calculator is too complicated. Whether it too complicated to use it and so too much complicated to make/assembly it. ASIAN TRADITIONAL calculating tool far more practical and easier too assembly. This curta curse is stupid engine 😂😂
