she turned out wonderfully..with the lights & nav beacons going she looks great. really enjoyed your 11 week epic journey & the Enterprise D looks beautiful
On the strobes I had pretty good luck with fiber optics. I heat up ends to flare it up a tiny bit and shield it with paint or shrink tubing and generally get minimal light leakage. Lou , youvevinspired me a lot and have so many amazing ideas .it's a joy watching your videos
The Galaxy Class is just a big lumbering beauty! A hilton in space with a lot of wasted extra room, off weight balance, overly top heavy and clumsy looking! And I’ll be damned if i don’t find it absolutely beautiful. Congratulations on this build, even in it’s imperfect stages (during your process) it’s still wonderful looking! And watching you work is mesmerizing. Ok, i’ll stop gushing now! ☺️
Your eleven week effort produced a beautiful 1701D Lou!!! There were so many small details like those windows and lifeboat decals that I admire you for finishing without going nuts. I think the paint/color turned out great and looks like the 1701D I remember. You are truly a master Lou!! I hope there's some more of those lights left up at Wal Mart but since we shop at the same one I may be too late. :) Take care my friend!
The model is beautiful. I really liked this series of videos on the Enterprise D. This really showed the viewer how you have to buckle down and get things done in a certain order to get great results. Thank You.
Absolutely awesome a real work of art showed the final video to my wife both her and I cant get over the final lightning effects realy fantastic. THANKS Looking forward to your your next project!
You did one-hell of a job with this great kit!!!!! If I had bought this kit, my wife would have sent me into orbit! So I have only the memory, thanks :)
Lou - if its any consolation - on camera the ship looks just about the perfect color :)! I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your build - in preparation for my own... I definitely picked up on a few gotchas that I will endeavor to try and avoid :)... and picked up a few new tricks I'm gonna give a try. Thanks a TON for tackling this beast of a kit, and I look forward to Enterprise D part Deux :)
Well done, Lou! My love, hate relationship with magnetic wire is long and sorted. What I have found that works is organization, organization and pin those suckers down as you go along wiring. I have used CA, small styrene tubing and shrink tubing. The wire itself is not delicate but the solder points are. Thank you for such an awesome series!
HI Lou, Man that is an awesome work of art. It looks absolutely amazing. I have followed all your videos on this build and have learned so much I can't wait to get mine and start on it. Looking forward to watching your other projects.
This also a perfect example of how colors are relative. I thought the ship was too blue, but I had patience over the weeks and waited for the phaser strips and decals to go on. Definitely makes the ship look correct now . Again. Great job Lou
Simply stunning, superb build . Highly educational, a joy to watch a master at work with all of your efforts rewarded with a fantastic result. Well done, congratulations and Bravo. A great way to start the new year!
Such nice colors on this model!👍 Regarding light-blocking the deflector housing and dish: I think laying down silver paint on the front surfaces before applying the orange colors could work.
Hey great build, as you said. With the led lights on the disc, that you didn't want to use metal as it would short out, youcould have used plastic pen cylinders to block them from the bleed through the window's. But all in all beautiful job.
Would be nice if this kit was made available via Polar Lights. I like things to be in scale and 1:1000 seems to be the scale that most of the ships are available. The smaller scales are just too small so 1:1000 is just right.
I'll be honest -- the strobe behind the bridge WAS overpowering. If you have to lose a light, that's probably the best one to lose! That looked like a heck of a build. There's gotta be an easier Enterprise-D to build because that just looks very involved! It's a nice size model if you have room to fit it but wow did that look like a lot of work. I hope you felt rewarded when you finished this one!
We are always the most critical of our own work. I think it's beautiful and well done. However, I am glad you are done with it cause I can't wait to see what you are going to do with the ktinga.
I’ve loved every step of this build, Lou. I know you’re not 100% happy (who ever is?) but it’s turned out stunning. Technically flawed or not, it’s a helluva showpiece. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Looks good overall, Lou! I think you're probably being a little tough on yourself, considering the length of the build time, but it was a very BIG build. I mean, sure...if you want to get picky, picky, the paint might not be perfect around some windows, etc, but it looks amazing all the same! The "paint cancers" might be bothersome to some, but for me, it can add a little realism to the model. Like battle damage to the hull that was repaired at a docking bay at some station. Heh. One what you said earlier: I imagine that it's extremely important to wash the parts of a garage kits more than once to ensure that all the release agents, oils, and so forth are completely gone by the start of the building process. I've had to learn this lesson over a couple of times myself. Sometimes I can get a little too eager to start a build, and I forget that moving too fast can cause a lot of headache later on. I enjoyed all of these videos, even though I much prefer the original USS ENTERPRISE (NCC-1701) to the the 1701D version, you did the build justice.
Man, Lou! This turned out fantastic! There's nooooooooooooo way I would have had the patience to work on something like this. Lately I've been in a bit of a modeling funk and have been doing Lego sets instead! Haha! My trying to not get frustrated with some of the kits I built over the last year has worn me out so I've moved on to something simpler. Really great job on this and it's been a pleasure watching you work on it!!
Lol, i always see the length of these vids and get antsy, (i’m not watching all this superfluous stuff, i just want to see the build) and then inevitably get so caught up in your process and presentation that i found i’ve lost a whole hour without skipping ahead once! Catharsis is addictive!
How much does this cost? Its on my dream list of kits especially as I am building all the newer 1 1000 trek kits and dig the scale (I built a massive 50 ship fleet in 1 2500 with a college friend ten years ago)
Just in case anyone is still wondering, my local Walmart had a whole display of those LED strips as of Jan.5. They were branded as AuraLED, not Monster, and the strip is white colored, but everything else is the same. Probably a regional thing, but I bought a half dozen.
pretty amazing job there, you deserve more subs. I would suggest using resistors in ten forward to make those lights at the very front just a little dimmer
Hi Lou, I know it was posted a while ago now but Ive just spent the past few nights watching you build the Ent-D and it was captivating. So much Im gonna build the smaller clear version and do the lights like you did (do you produce and sell the masks for them and the aztecs???). Ive subscribed now so I can watch all your other vids, well done on your fantastic work and channel 😁
We're finished? I was beginning to think the TNG March was your new theme song! Spectacular model with similar build problems. But the end result is mind-boggling and beautiful. I can well understand the urge to have another go, but wait till the escape pod shakes settle down. I still can't stop thinking there's an nav light solution somewhere. There are side-firing LEDs out there-- the last time I checked they were so-so, maybe they're better now. Perhaps another case style-- or sand one flat with a piece of fiber optic stuck to the flat. Paint Tulip all around save for the business end. Okay, here's the craziest idea yet-- a piece of satin "bare-metal" foil. It's about .001" thick so it's a minimal surface dispruption. 'Satin' so you can paint on it. Yes, it's a pain cutting out around windows and such. But I can't see any way around surface leakage. You might be able to do that now, at this stage too. Oh, it's a headache-- but not like escape pods. As for your next build-- saw out the nav light area and build a light-tight or metal box around it. Then re-install the chunk. The lost strobe is a tooth-grinder-- though you took it well. One of the charms of magnet wire is that it's so thin-- but Circuit Specialists have rolls of similar number wire with insulation. 30 ga. and it's not that much thicker. They might have 32 ga. I really enjoyed this, Lou-- all my carping was just a bonus! The end results are worth all your struggle-- me? I just drank more coffee during your hardest parts... but I did chew a nail.
Hello everyone! thanks for the many kind words you have posted about this project! I am pleased to announce that the painting templates and masks are now available for purchase. If you are interested, please email me at aztekdummy@att.net and I'll spill the details.
oh man. I want one, but I don't want to build it.... Can I just throw my money at someone to do it for me? Once I have money to throw away, I want to commission someone to build like an actual huuuuge metal version, like museum level awesomeness. Like have it be above a bar, and encompass the entire bar! That would kick ASS!!!
Absolutely amazing i cant wait to Purchase this kit it will be my 1st garage kit is there a Choice between decals or the templates Or Aztecs that can be Purchased
Hello from Singapore! Great Job! I had built the AMT Enterprise D before. Yes, painting the Aztec and adding lights was a nightmare. You make me want to get the kit and relived those nightmares all over again. 😅😅😅 Do you intend to replace the bridge strobe light? Thank you for sharing and have a great year ahead!
Hello Lou, beautiful Enterprise d you habe built. I like the Upper Laser very much. Can you please Tell me you did it and which Electronics you User. Thank you and stay healthy. Matthias
I'm looking back at your old vids. You mentioned that "we can't get out of 2018 fast enough". Just wait till 2020! They say hindsight is 2020. I bet no one saw this coming.
I retrofitted 11 of the 1K Brass Enterprise D ship for Las Vegas (ST:TE) in 2000; with lights, remote and sound. I need to talk to you about masks for what I'm working on. This (resin?) one looks a little smaller than mine (??). We'll talk. Thanks.
I HAVE THE ALL GOOD THINGS VERSION OF THAT SHIP, IT IS THAT SAME SIZE OR VERY CLOSE TO IT... I GOT IT ABOUT FIVE OR MORE YEARS AGO.... I LOVE IT.......04-12-2020-19:24HRS..........
What a ride this was. I did not know something like this model even existed, super advanced, very difficult to put together, not to mention all the wiring A tons of precious advices and tecniques for modelling, I'm very surprised by the whole new world this series just opened. Hat off for realizing this Enterprise. I'm 35 and I come from the planet of miniature painting, I did a few models, always searching for anything new to be learned. A few questions for you sir: How do you manage the process for the "Azteks" computer program and plotters? How long have you been doing tis kind of modelling, is this a full time job for you? Which kind of glue do you suggest beside regular plastic glue and CA? I guess scale modelling goes a long way, whic kind of kit would you suggest? How long did it takes to master the skill for wiring and al the light? I apologize for my english, and thank you in advance; greetings from Italy. All you work is INCREDIBLY inspiring.
Rik, thanks for the kind words. I've been at this hobby for the last 15 or 20 years and I'm still picking up new tools and techniques. As for glues, I recommend MEK for styrene. As for kits, build what interests you. There are more types of kits out there now than any time I can remember. If you co e from the miniature world, there are some great warhammer kits you could try.
@@aztekdummy I sure Will try a few, and considering switching to military scale models. I'll follow the channel hoping to improve myself and picking advices here and there.
Really nice! You've done a fantastic job, and seeing this motivates me to carry on with mine! I wasn't prepared for how labour intensive it is installing the lighting. I'd got to a certain stage where I thought I was ready to start scraping the windows in the battle section, and then the blue strips in the nacelles failed so I've had to go back and open them up and fix that which is frustrating. One thing I noticed is that you have the windows right on the edge of the sensor strip on the battle section, whereas my kit doesn't appear to have window recesses in this area. Did you add these yourself?
Lou Dalmaso ha ha yes there are certainly plenty of windows! I think your kit must be a different tooling as mine definitely doesn’t have those windows there - I think I will have to make do without them as scraping them in neatly will be virtually impossible!
Congratulations on a job well done! BTW: Do you remember if that Equinox you built had enough interior space for electronics? I'm considering buying the clear version as a companion for my Revell Voyager.
So this looks amazing, however being the trek nerd that I am, none of the life pods were labeled like that. They were invisible. Those are way too bright and noticeable. They were barely seen on the show even later on in the series when they added them in. I really never have liked how the models now have that military pattern on the ships. It was basically flat grey. I never understood why they added that too.
I meant that I can see no channels or spaces for lights in those areas. Remember the big saucer crash scene in Generations? You get a real good look at the space between the top and bottom halves of the saucer and there are no lights
@@aztekdummy Yeah I remember the crash scene and asked myself the very same question. But if you freeze frame there appears to be a grate or grill detail in that section that would suggest a source of some sort of field or light emission? The reason why I remembered the effect is that I obcessed over the detail so much as a kid and I remember the effect being powered down as the Enterprise suffered an energy drain from the Guardian that was on the planet below. I cant remember what the episode is called but I know its Season One? And it was my Very First Enterprise D Kit! She was a bit of a Shocker when I opened the box- thats before I watched EAFP E1. I thought that the box art was all wrong- and then realised the new design did indeed have an elliptical Primary Hull that dwarfed the Secondary! As a kid I found the design challenging. Funny thing though Mrs Totally Loves it?
An Interesting Build! She’s an Impressive Kit! May I ask you some Questions? A) Where and How Can I Purchase One? B) Is the Enterprise Galaxy Class D not a Tri-tone Matt Finish? C) The Lateral Sensor Strips on the Primary And Secondary Hulls are Illuminated are they not? D) The Warp Nacelles- Should there be a Transparent Copper Wash that is present when not illuminated? E) The Interplanetary Deflector Dish Housing is a Type Of Salamander Matt Orange/ Yellow? F) The Buzzard Collectors Chiller Manifold is a Matt Yellow? G) The Rear Cargo Bays- are they not Tri-toned and more Detailed? Many Thanks and Kind Regards
a) www.donshoko.com b) there are as many as 4 colors on the hull. it was primarily a two tone finish for the TV series, but the biggest model was repainted for the "Generations" movie and more colors were added to show more detail for the big screen. I started adding the colors on the secondary hull, but didn't care for it so I only added a few spots of a third color on the saucer. c) no d) yes - refer to the Christies auction pictures of the ship . I have it on mine as well, but you can't see it when the lights are on. just like the "real' ship e) again, check the Christies pictures f) See D & E above g) I gave an approximation of the detail on the areas between the pylons . there is a tn more. some so fine you wouldn't see it at this 1000 scale. I don't know what you mean by rear cargo bays. the only ones I'm aware of are the fantail shaped doors on the bottom of the saucer and on the belly of the ship right behind the deflector. those are monotone hull color
Hi! Thanks For Your Generosity and Enthusiasm As Ever! The Cargo Bays I Refer To are located at the Rear of the Enterprise’s Undercut Secondary Hull- there are three Large Cargo Bay Doors. The Primary And Secondary Hull Sensor Strips were Lit in one or two TNG Episodes. The one I remember in Particular is when the Enterprise Engages a Ferengi Marauder. Best
@@eugenerusselnash oh, Those crescent shaped doors! yes. they are multicolored. I did paint 3 colors on them. if the sensor strips were lit, it must have been a mistake by the efx guys on the show. Since they only used the Marauder in the first season (for the most part) I'm willing to believe that they were still new to the show and simply goofed. there are no channels for lights to be there
Well done, my friend! Thank you again! So beautiful Lou!
The epitome of ‘fiddly’ but she’s a beauty of a Starship. Absolutely stunning.

There should be a dash before the "D".
Thank you!!!
I'd been wanting to redo the base vinyl because there was a few trapped air bubbles, but now I've got a real good reason to redo it
Fast Forward 5 years and your building a 1/650 scale Enterprise D! Lol!
BRILLANT!!!
Awesome result!
Awesome work as usual Lou. Hey any updates on the K'Tinga masks yet?
Ok thank you
Lou
How do I get the Aztec painting masks for this?
email me at aztekdummy@att.net for the details
Will do....thanks
What a ride this was.
I did not know something like this model even existed, super advanced, very difficult to put together, not to mention all the wiring
A tons of precious advices and tecniques for modelling, I'm very surprised by the whole new world this series just opened.
Hat off for realizing this Enterprise. I'm 35 and I come from the planet of miniature painting, I did a few models, always searching for anything new to be learned.
A few questions for you sir:
How do you manage the process for the "Azteks" computer program and plotters?

I sure Will try a few, and considering switching to military scale models.
This kit has enough windows without me adding more.😁 no they were molded in. There are actually a few more that I haven't opened yet.
I'm considering buying the clear version as a companion for my Revell Voyager.
as I recall, it was a solid block of resin. so any space you'd have to hollow out for yourself
there's a clear version?
Thanks!
Yes, Federation Models has a clear version in their shop: www.federationmodels.com/model_kits/alliance/default.htm
Repeat After Me - 'Finished Is Better Than Perfect'...
Bravo Lou
Very nice!!!
When you light the entire thing i got :0
So this looks amazing, however being the trek nerd that I am, none of the life pods were labeled like that. They were invisible. Those are way too bright and noticeable. They were barely seen on the show even later on in the series when they added them in. I really never have liked how the models now have that military pattern on the ships. It was basically flat grey. I never understood why they added that too.
Lou - How do I contact you about purchasing paint masks for the E-D and other things?
aztekdummy@att.net
yes great stuff its dun and looks fabales LOL yes ho a good MMXIX to you i see as post NEST KIT
It is a Fair Bet That it was Trial and Error or they just plain didn’t like the effect? What Channels are you referring to? Interior or Exterior?

Wow 👍👍 👏 👏👏
Don Shoko no longer produces this. Is there anyone that knows where to get this?
there is a RUMOUR that round 2 is interested. I do not know anything for certain
Is this kit still available
not that I know of
Bummer thank you for replying I always enjoy your videos I learn something all the time
Whats the length of that kit?
It is 26 inches from stem to stern
@@aztekdummy thank you. Very impressive !
Many Thanks and Kind Regards
a) www.donshoko.com
b) there are as many as 4 colors on the hull. it was primarily a two tone finish for the TV series, but the biggest model was repainted for the "Generations" movie and more colors were added to show more detail for the big screen. I started adding the colors on the secondary hull, but didn't care for it so I only added a few spots of a third color on the saucer.
c) no
d) yes - refer to the Christies auction pictures of the ship . I have it on mine as well, but you can't see it when the lights are on. just like the "real' ship
e) again, check the Christies pictures
f) See D & E above
g) I gave an approximation of the detail on the areas between the pylons . there is a tn more. some so fine you wouldn't see it at this 1000 scale.
Since they only used the Marauder in the first season (for the most part) I'm willing to believe that they were still new to the show and simply goofed. there are no channels for lights to be there
Do you do commissions?
sorry, but no. I sell finished kits, but I don't like to take commissions because then folks think they can tell me what to do :)
@@aztekdummy looking for a finished Enterprise D like the one you did
I think you could do better a second time too. I volunteer mine. You can send me yours, and we both win!
