I love the Durango for its combination of major towing specs, V8 grunt (which includes that sweet Hemi exhaust note) and available 2 speed transfer case AWD that allows it to be flat towed behind a bigger motorhome. Add three row seating and you can’t find that combination in any other vehicle. Thanks Alex!
Yes the Durango may look out dated a bit. But it is an all around good towing suv. I like the fact that you can get the wider tires and better breaks on the regular 5.7 as an option. The sound of the SRT 6.4, if it can be had for a good deal.....is the way to go ! Alex always does a great job with his reviews.....another banger review
I feel the same. The Explorer may be newer, but I still feel like the Durango is the better vehicle, especially for towing and hauling purposes. And the interior of the Explorer is a huge letdown.
Alex when discussing max towing it is imperative to talk about payload capacity. If your towing 8,700 pounds that means you have at least 870 on the hitch. When you subtract 870 pounds from the Durango’s payload capacity that is the max weight of passenger and cargo. For the Durango that leaves you 720 pounds. 3 passengers and some cargo and you’re right at your max payload. Personally if I were towing over 5,000 pounds I would only consider a full size SUV such as an expedition or a Tahoe/suburban. I never want to max out my vehicles capabilities.
When you add the driving impressions video, take a moment to mention reliability. More specifically, the drivetrains offered are mature, refined, and mostly bulletproof. I feel like as much hate as the FCA vehicles get, it’s an injustice not to point this out. Especially compared to the German stuff, which by comparison is unreliable and overpriced.
Many of the larger Chrysler motors were having cylinder deactivation problems that cause blown motors, idk if this issue has actually been resolved yet.
I've always like the Durango with it's rear drive unit body combination, macho looks compared to other cross overs. Plus I'm 6'8" and it has to be about the most comfortable vehicle I've driven with a ton of front seat leg room.
I loved your review of the Citadel! Very refreshing and honest. I'm biased as a Durango owner myself but I do hope your experience was good enough to keep you driving one lol. Great video!
I am actually looking at this as a cheap half ton pickup replacement. For 55k msrp you get effectively a fully loaded (minus insane engines) dodge durango, and in order to come close to that in a half ton pickup (their own ram 1500) you are spending easily 65k. Sure if you need the bed for work then you need the bed, but if you don't and just want the towing, this makes for a MUCH better daily driver with 4 corner independant suspension over still having a solid rear axle, a full time awd system rather than a part time 4wd locking center, better weight balance and probably better fuel economy since its lower to the ground. I would actually love an f150 with the ecoboost but I would either be getting a spec-ed out XLT or a basic lariat depending on what features I valued more for that price. The one thing that might be worth it is the powerboost, as now were talking an alleged 24mpg vs the durango's realistic 16, and 50% fuel economy improvement combined with a bigger tank is just a dream come true

Got just an 18 R/T with tow package for about half of what a 2021 goes for. I’m ok with my 7200 lbs towing capacity. Still plenty - and 8700 is just amazingly impressive for this segment. My F150 twin turbo ecoboost is rated for 10300 so 7200 is plenty for an SUV.
I agree with you, Alex, with the desire for the 5.7 liter V8, NOT the "bat-shit" crazy 700+ hp version. I really like the look of this new model SRT, too.
The new dash is really an awesome upgrade. The Tow-N-Go package is a great bargain. What is not a bargain. Is the insurance on the Durango. The insurance is 220% of the cost of our Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L coverage. Yet they are similar value. And my Durango is a 3.6L GT AWD.
What they're going for with the new carbon fiber inserts is to mimic the look of some of the higher end knife handles that are using similar materials on the scales.
Alex, Thank you for the analytic description that only you bring to a review. Great understandable info on Tow N Go and availability across motor options!! Thank You!
@Alex- The Durango is AWD due to it not having the 2-speed xfer case unless you get the Citadel like yours. Jeep has two versions of the 4WD system with the two-speed xfer case.
It doesn't matter what you have, FCA calls the 2-speed transfer case system on the Durango AWD and the same system on the Jeep 4WD. They call the Pacifica AWD, and the same system on the basic Cherokee 4WD, the system on the Compass is 4WD, on the FIat 500, AWD. It's always been a differentiation based entirely in marketing.
review threw me a lil because the exterior was an RT with all the bells and whistles badging on the grill and side and the interior was that of an SRT from the Launch button SRT seats and steering wheel
Hi Alex. Why wouldn’t the AWD Durango RT with the Tow And Go package have the AWD Low switch option and how would one order that option? It’s not an available option on the Dodge website.
Nice review. There's nothing that provides everything the current, V8 Durango provides, and it'll be a shame when it goes away. Hopefully the replacement is just as capable!

Why are you showing the exterior of the R/T Tow N Go with blacktop and the interior of the SRT Hellcat? The interior of the R/T is different than the SRT Hellcat.
Not seriously. The Sequoia is too old, too big, too thirsty and too expensive. Vs the 6.4 or the '21 5.7, it can't tow as much either. The Sequoia's transmission is also behind the times, why Toyota won't spread their 10 or at least 8 speed across the line is beyond me.
The air vents are taken from the Grand Wagoneer Concept. I fear this parts sharing will water down the luxury appeal they are trying to generate with the GW.
8700 lbs trailer weight. OK. BUT 10% on hitch = 870 lbs. Payload capacity 1200 lbs - 870 lbs of trailer on tongue = 330 lbs payload capacity = one max. two persons on board.
