The drama tells the life of Xiao Yanyan, who was the most powerful woman of the Liao dynasty. Xiao Yanyan and Han Derang were childhood sweethearts, but were separated when she was sent into the palace to become the consort of Yelü Xian. Though Xiao Yanyan and Yelu Xian's marriage was not one built on romance, Xiao Yanyan fulfills her job as a dedicated empress, and gains her husband's respect after the policies she instated proved her capability. Xiao Yanyan is entrusted with governing the country and acting as regent for their son after Yelv Xian’s death, and is eventually able to marry her true love Han Derang, who had become the most influential Han official in the Liao court.

I love Derang's maturity in handling issues. He listens more after a lot of reflections before responding. He is so calm and intelligent. I love the way he listens quietly to his wife and stepson. So respectful and sweet!

It is sad to hear that Yan Yan died of illness due to stress and worries and thus, her time with Han Derang, without having to deal with the affairs of Liao state, was shortened. But, I am somewhat touched thinking that Han Derang died so soon, only 15 months later, because of illness imbued by the death of his true loved one, Yan Yan.
A touching love story indeed. I love the dorama and the cast!! No regrets!! I hope to see another historical drama with TangYan and ShawnDou despite the "bad" reviews of this one.

One of the best dramas I have seen this year. Really sad it's ended. Magnificently filmed, acted and loved the story of a strong woman.
Theres a lot more to see.but i dunno what type would you like actions, drama? Pricess Agents for example. Han Derang is also one of the character. .

@@jackie11yuen There was once announced that princess agents 2 will come. But to dissapoint you its not going to come. Zhao liying was way to busy so she couldnt film season 2. The director wanted to exchange Zhao liying with Angelababy, but the main role Yuwen yue didnt wanted to act without Zhao liying. So yeah its sad. But i couldnt imagine princess agent without xinger.
No comment except that it was such a good drama and at least Yanyan and Derang were able to be together and buried side by side.
This series was sooo good. It was full of love, hate, betrayal, redemption, plotting, danger and defence. I was happy with the ending and the fact that Hunian finally understood yanyans intentions
Hunian and yanyan loved how close they both were but now that wild boy is come between them didn't want the relationship between the two sisters to become so violent

Your series remember me, as a classical music fanatic, of Richard Wagner, which I adore. The epics, the drama, the plots, the magesty the ups and downs, the tragedies, the forbiden loves, the revenges, the Historical acuity, well unbeliavable. An huge kowtow to EVERYBODY involved in these series. Excellent directing, brilliant actors, the decors, the battles, I just have no words......Thank you for the English subtitles, please don't dube it, your language is too much beautiful. No matter how sad the story was I'm glad derang and yanyan ended up together . Tiffany act was great
The story is not only about everlasting love and sacrifice, but of honor and loyalty. The love Han Derang had for Yanyan is full of love, but he did not cause any upheaval but faith that fate will give her to him until the end. GREAT GREAT ACTING 👍

The 2 lead characters Derang & Yanyan drew me to this series. I had seen Derang (as a baddie in Princess Agents) & Yanyan in Princess Weiming (sorry might be misspelt). I rate this as a favorite alongside Rebel Princess 😍

It kind of IS a happy ending though. She got to grow old with the man she loved, and died with him by her side surrounded by her beautiful healthy children. She succeeded in making the country prosperous, raised the new emperor and kept him safe, AND got her love.
I’m happy and satisfied the ending story of this Drama, love,sacrifices,hurts and at the end Yan & Derang’s are happily together till their last breath. Thanks to the Producers, director & Staffs especially Tiffany & Shaun and all the supporting Actors & Actresses. Thanks also for the English version. Watching here in Canada! God bless! This name sisters and family is really weird for me on this whole drama,from Wuguli to Hunian they are always saying that Yanyan is in fault to what had happened to their lives while many times they tried to kill her and her son,where is the so called sister and family in there? They don’t think that if their husband not died it would be yanyan’s death?

I wouldn't put Hunian the same as wugul; wugul was stupid regardless what her hubby did; the problem was the 'hillbilly boy', he didn't have court 'manners' so he offended the queen when he stood up to retaliate what the emperor said even though both were right. The issue of controlling the military by big sis could've been discussed intelligently at another time...it was a mistake by the inexperienced emperor to bring it up on an occasion that was supposed to be merry....so all hell broke loose. Big mistake when hillybilly boy tried to harm the emperor which caused big sis to be in prison and eventually execution which I don't think she deserved. bottom line, Hunian wasn't plotting against the queen, she returned bc the queen asks her to and shit happened that caused her misfortune...queen should've let her and boyfriend go ...after all, it was the emperor who started all the mishap

Yanyan tried to spare her sisters every time, when their husbands had tried countless times to kill and undermine her power, yanyan is the empress and couldn’t think for herself and personal reasons but she tried to spare their feelings. Hunian being the elder sibling I expected better but she too was selfish and didn’t try to see from her perspective she’s an EMPRESS she governs a whole country for god sake she had to make difficult decisions
Yanyan never asked to be Empress in the first place they all see past their faults, Xiyin and Taiping had all tried to kill yanyan and Ruin their country multiple times, Wuguli failed to see her husbands short comings and terrible decisions she tried countless times to keep them alive, Talan abo was a fool and tried to kill her son the Emperor which is treason ! Power was what ruined their family not yanyan

I feel so sorry for Talan Abo. He was just a baby; grew up as an orphan, he didn't know better than taking care of the horses and roaming freely. Yes, Hunian should of listened to him and just be free knowing how Imperial life is, and knowing that Talan Abo has a childish free spirit.
I feel sorry for Yanyan. Both her older sisters are completely and utterly dickified that they can’t even recognize the right fom wrong. I mean all those lives wasted just to defend a mere boytoy? And an idiot one at that. Yanyan’s side attacking is justifiable. The idiot tried to assasinate the emperor after all. And Hunian saying she could’ve done a better job if she were the queen is preposterous. I mean, going into war for an idiot boytoy? Yeah right! Liao would’ve been screwed.
Exactly... Talan Abo is obviously an idiot but she could have lead a wonderful life with him if she had freed herself from the promise she made to her rebellious dead husband. Wuguli never really was a good sister all she had in mind was her love for xinyin but hunian I thought she was better than that and it was an eye opener for me that she wanted to be powerful too

Yes, she even admitted her desire for power in her last meeting with Derang.
The eye opener for me, was her father saw it a long time ago (I think it was when she volunteered to be queen in Yanyan’s place). He knew his daughters and the existing branches of power best. That is why he sided with the marriage and Mingi taking the throne.
I initially thought the father was just interested in power himself, he had served under the emperor’s father and was loyal to the overall vision for the country. Mingi was also loyal to that vision and willing to do whatever necessary in pursuing it including breaking up Derang and Yanyan.
Derang and Yanyan also saw the vision and moved toward it...the vision was not in pursuit of individual power, but a powerful, peaceful and unified country.
The other branches (crown prince and cray cray prince) were selfish, mean and seeking power for the wrong reasons.
The good guys won!

I thought back to their father's words, when he said Hunan thought she should be the Empress and marry the Emperor in her sister's place. I though wow how quickly did she forget the man she was crying and risking her life to save. Yanyan was destined to be the Empress, like she was destined to be with Derang in the end.
A very nice and entertaing drama. Although the main story line was about Yan Yan, it carries a lot of educational material regarding the importance of moral values concerning the life and responsibility of each and every person in his/her respective role during one's lifetime. All characters in the drama played very well to fit their roles. Last but not the least I enjoy watching the lovely costumes worn by the actors/actresses. The subtitles are almost perfect.

This drama was not just for entertainment only but there were real lessons that we can relate to which made it more interesting. I enjoyed to the end.

After all the tragic events, the queen was lenient, allowing Hunian to live out her years. The queen valued family but majority of them were DEAD SET AGAINST HER. If I could turn back TIME I would URGE Derang to MARRY Yanyan as a MATTER OF URGENCY. They would be HAPPILY married even without children and won't give a damn about the fricking THRONE. The Consort's son was so handsome and gorgeous in the background.😉😊😁 I had LOL and learned history, merry xmas, be safe and peace!❤❤xx😉

After all the Talan Abo is just someone who never sees the world outside, who never knows the rule, and being impulsive, a bit native and childish, can't believe such a "nobody" creates the tragedy to Hunian.
His wrong in some point of view and didnt thought of his actions but the only thing that man thinks is hunian ... after hearing words he felt that what the empress and emperor wants was unfair to hunian ... he cares a lot and love hunian purely ... though his action brought hunian to dilemma and to his own death ... we cant blame the man he knews the pain hunian had before ... the reason he become more impulsive ... yongxing place turn over by yansage to hunian and told her not let anyone take it from here cause it the home yansage leave for hunian ... even his rebellious but this two men love hunian the most ...
He did not create tragedy for her. She did herself. She is way older than him and should know better.
She was old as hell and really lonely. I think she just needed someone to love because she chose to be alone after Yasage.

This was a good drama and am happy Yanyan and Derang ended up together. But sadly painful to see the sisters separated and all blames placed on Yanyan, without her elder sisters realising they were at fault and blinded by love and jealousy because they couldn't get what they wanted.

Hunian was my favorite sister in the beginning because I felt she was always clear headed and rational. Then they ruined her character by letting her be so blind. NO Hunian! It is not Yanyan's fault everyone died, it was their own fault. They were all power hungry and chose to go down that path. It's either Yanyan or them who would die in the end.

I love Yanyan's determination to make sure Liao peospered and Derang's unwavering dedication to her. He was willing to be by herside even when she was still holding out on marrying him. He was willing to die for her. The sad part for her sisters, is that they were real people.

If she however chooses to punish them she is ruthless. What kind of thinking is that?? Anyways... This was quite an epic drama. After a few episodes I stopped shipping Derang and Yanyan but I am really happy that they ended up together at the end despite how short it was.

Only one kiss in the entire series? Couldn’t watch after the episode where they finally were together. I came here to last episode about episode 30 because I couldn’t stand a tragic ending so watch the last few minutes. Once Hunian met Talonabo I just know something really bad would be coming.

I dont really care ... in the history ... i like hunian the most ... they didnt even show how the empress put her in prison and killed .... just because shes afraid that hunian will take the throne from her son ... but i dont believe hunian will be that heartless person as she thinks for me shes more than heartless ... than hunian ... empress never felt the pain hunian had ... cause she have everything the power she had derang and her children while hunian she lost everything she had .. and this empress after everything she still dares to say ... just think that all those things never happened and remind the same like before .... are you insane??? From the very start you already disliked talan abo and called him horse breeder ... even you know his name you still addresses him like that ..
