  • Could my next go-to film be Ilford FP4 Plus? YES! I love the sharpness, latitude, and price. What's NOT to love?
    I bought a couple rolls, and the first roll I shot with my Leica M6 using a Voigtlander 28mm lens and a vintage Canon 50mm lens. Both of these lenses have interesting qualities, and by no means are they perfect creations. The Voigtlander drops off on the edges and the Canon needs to be slightly adjusted so the focus is tack sharp, but they do a very good job capturing what I’m looking for. This film is what I want, and if I'm looking for a bit more grain, I'll adjust my developing procedures.
    Here's the link to Ilford's page on the film.

    The product description from the site:
    ILFORD FP4 PLUS is a medium speed, all-purpose black & white film with very fine grain and outstanding sharpness.
    It has superb exposure latitude above and below its ISO 125, (meaning it can be both push or pull-processed). This makes FP4 PLUS a highly capable film for most photographic subjects, scenarios and lighting conditions.
    It particularly excels at highly detailed subjects in good indoor and outdoor lighting conditions and is therefore an ideal film for portraits, fashion, street, product photography, landscapes and architecture.
    FP4 PLUS can be processed in a wide range of different developers using spiral tanks, deep tanks and automatic processors.

    Let us take a moment to appreciate just how great this video is: short, on point, no-bullshit, high quality content -- and stunning images on top of that. Thank you very much!

    Loved this one, JG. Amazing shots, really loved the one with the Pan Am sign. I can only hope to visit Tokyo some day. Looks beautiful and a dream for photography. Thank you so much for the video.

    What about the developer? I don't like the FP4 because the grain si too fine and creamy. Usually I develop in D76 stock.

      Yeah! I'm using D-76 for everything I develop. Seems like a good combo!

    Have you tried HP5 ? What are your thoughts comparing that and XP2 400 ?

      Hey, Daniel.
      I have tried HP5 and like it quite a bit, but I actually prefer XP2 over it. I prefer XP2's shadows and midtones over HP5. In the last three years, I've probably purchased four rolls of HP5. And in that same time, I've purchased at least 30 rolls of XP2, which is a clear winner for me. Here's a video that shows a bit more. ua-cam.com/video/Cw52vbT9pyM/v-deo.htmlsi=ZP0AeO7JHVv0jIPl Let me know how things go for you. XP2 could be the "one" you gravitate towards.

      🤓i have HP5 in bulk so I’ll keep shooting that but I bought a few rolls XP2 so I’ll give it a go. I’m open to new and innovative. Perhaps developing new film will enable analog to stay alive as digital evolves but I do love tradition and HP5 is a great stock

    Hello Jason, I'd be curious to get your input for a photography project I have in mind for 2023. My project is to capture the ordinary because I think it will one day be extraordinary.
    The genesis to this project is a picture I saw from the Los Alamos series by William Eggleston of a mid 50s Ford coupe parked on the street. The car's styling along with the businesses in the background make this image more than just a snapshot. It's a record of an era from an automotive, architectural and commerical point of view. Of course, at the time the photo seemed commonplace, but when we compare it to today we can see the passage of time, even in terms of values. This is especially apparent on one of the buildings because there's an ad for "Beer to go," which is unthinkable today.
    For 2023, I want to capture the commonplace because I think it will seem remarkable in 20, 30 or 50 years. This is going to be a film photography project and I was wondering which colour film you find is the most true to life. I'm not looking at slide film due to the excess saturation. I'm looking for honest colours.

      Hello! This sounds like a delightful project. I look forward to seeing your test work on it and I'm sure it will be quite compelling. Passion resonates! So, as far as colour film goes, I can't help you much. I don't shoot much of it. The film I have shot, that I love, is Cinestill 800T and I've shot this at night only. Any other colour film I've shot isn't in production anymore (Fujicolor Industrial 100 and Pro400H) I would probably peruse Instagram with hashtags, like #KodakFilm or something like that. Better yet, Google "favorite color film" and go from there. You're going to get TONS of results, so you'll have to do some deep diving. Thanks for chiming in!

      @TokyoGritandGrain  3 місяці тому +1

      @@JohnDoe-m3q very minimal amounts of dodging and burning. I used my curves to create the overall look for this roll. A few of the images have a bit of a glow to them and that's from the crazy old Canon 35mm LTM lens. 👍🏼

      @@TokyoGritandGrain ya I feel this film dont need much editing and looks good straight out of camera. I enjoy flatter looks in some images and this film looks good with no edits at all. Good choice.

      @TokyoGritandGrain  3 місяці тому

      @@JohnDoe-m3q Thank ya much! I need to shoot more of this stock, mostly because I feel it does really well in an urban environment where I'm in & out of hard shadows quite often. It can handle the shadowy areas and the bright spots really well. Thanks for chiming in!

    • @JohnDoe-m3q
      @JohnDoe-m3q 3 місяці тому

      @@TokyoGritandGrain I agree the film gets so much light it being a slower film anyways that those shadows still give detail. Maybe do a video on expired FP4? Don't worry about over exposing a stop every decade of expiration date just shoot it at box speed. My experience has been good with expired low speed black and white films and one time not so much. But I think it would be cool to do a video on expired FP4 shot at box speed with little to no edits at all.

    • @TokyoGritandGrain
      @TokyoGritandGrain  3 місяці тому +1

      @@JohnDoe-m3q I'm super into expired film and haven't shot this stock after its prime. I always dev at box speed no matter when it expired because I actually like knowing what the outcomes will be. Super interesting, IMO.
