. When I lived on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, we had no cars and everybody rode bikes. I built a trailer for my bike to haul dive gear, including tanks, for four divers. Hauled a couple hundred pounds of gear on a regular basis. You did a mighty fine job building that trailer young brother.
THE best basic design I've seen for such a trailer in three days of searching...I want to build something I can take my small dog with me down the bike trails. Yes, it's a beefy design and yes I'll modify it...but the greatest help is seeing something put together in great detail with clear instructions and reasoning behind it. This is a great starting point for me. Thanks!
Awesome project!!! You could even take advantage of the gear left on the rear bike tire and hook up a battery and a small electric motor with sprocket and chain and a switch to make it into a pusher motor to help up hills. Even hook up a generator like on a bicycle light set to one of the tires to help keep the battery charged when you are not using it. or add a solar battery tender to help keep the battery charged. Awesome trailer hitch connection by far the best I have seen in a DIY hitch !!!!
I like your hitch coupler assembly. I made a whole trailer frame one time out of PVC pipe, goose neck and all like yours and put a gusset @ 45 degrees below the 90 degree going to the bike seat. I simply used smaller pvc pipe for the gusset drilling the holes with a hole saw. Made the smaller gusset pipe long enough to glue a plastic cap on each end and letting it dry good over night. I used rubber hose to make my connection to the bike with a quick pin like yours. The only draw back I didn't like was trying to line the holes up with the plastic pipe and pushing the pin threw all of it. Picture my frame with being a rectangle with a T connection in the middle of both sides and a pipe going across making it very strong. This is also where the sold axle went through and ball bearing air tires 5/8" axle (Harbor Freight) mounted to. Axle rod Home Depot. You can off set this crossmember moving it forward or backwards to suit your needs. I also used a large plastic tote to put stuff in to haul. I pop riveted the tote to the frame and front goose neck with 3/16" rivets. That way you have a really nice water proof trailer. I like your idea kid! You keep thinking and building stuff and you will have a rich and rewarding life!

why don't you put a small 2x4 right underneath the lights to make like a bumper it would help keep the lights from breaking just a thought.. nice job your giving me some ideas. peace
good job....i thought of building one myself but due to lack of tools, i just waited patiently until i found a good $20 child trailer from craigslist...removed the nylon parts and put a heavy duty plastic tray on top

I built a trailer that is 5.5 feet wide and 8 feet long. its a flatbed. I mainly haul bikes on it. surprisingly its not hard to pull at all... I already had it in a Christmas parade too.
That all sounds a bit expensive! If I didn't care about my bike as much I would mind cutting and modifying to add something like that. For now this will be fine. I'll just have some bigger legs by the time I stop using it lol. Thanks for watching.

Looks like a nice sturdy trailer but a bit heavy to pull along. There are maybe ways of making it a bit lighter like plastic mudguards even plastic side panels.

I thought of making my own trailer too....but i can not come up with a really nice hitch from household items...so i ended up buying a beat up child trailer, removing the nylon clothe and putting a rectangular Rubbermaid container on top....$35 for all the second hand materials.....i used it to collect empty cans for recycling.....i made more than $2000 from it....i really miss that trailer...i had to leave it in Canada when i moved to los angeles
Very nice, I've seen a few metal ones but I like the wood PVC idea since I don't have a freaking welder I may just go with this. This would be perfect to tow a small boat around in (with a few modifications). Thankx.
I was thinking of adding the motor and battery to the trailer not the bike. You can find electric scooters and bikes at thrift stores pretty cheap and just adapt them to the trailer and extend the controls to the handle bars with a cable and male female electrical connection like on a trailer towed behind a vehicle. when the trailer is not in use simply unplug and disconnect from the ball like on a normal utility trailer. the trailer with motor would help push the bike up hills from behind.
The engineering solutions are really good and a lot of thought went into it, except aerodynamics. I doubt you would want to pull this very quickly in any event, but anything over 10mph is going to put serious pressure on the front of this rig. You have a 308 square inch wind catchment system and some fraction of that in the back if you do not have it securely covered (we'll just round it up to 500 square inches). That is over 3 square feet of air resistance, though that would be reduced if the cover is on securely because the wind won't be able to catch any of the back on the inside. If you could get some really lightweight plastic or maybe bend up some hanger and make a cage to put on the front to create a V shape facing forward (if you use hangers, you could stretch a plastic bag over the frame to create the > shape). The air resistance over 10MPH is the main resistance on a bike and it exponentially accelerates up with speed The numbers just explode as you go up. Also, cross winds are going to be really dangerous with 968 square inches of wind catchment (with the top securely covered, up over 1500 without). A 15mph wind could probably knock you over if it hits at just the right angle, especially if you get bouncing of the wind off the ground and it puts sideways and upward winds on the side, the underneath and those fenders. I was going to build a bike trailer and had solved most of the building problems, but it was aerodynamics that caused me to just buy a used 2 baby trailer. It's structurally sound and very aerodynamic.
You. Can find your specific state plate (for personal use only, not affiliated with any DMV or Tag Agency) by looking up bicycle licence plates on eBay, it's made of same material, but not embossed and inexpensive; I'll be buying my own for my rear bicycle rack
I built my own bike trailer about a month ago and the other day I needed to shift some dog food and it was the only thing that could easily move the amount I had at the time. I then worked out I had loaded 175 Kg's (385 lb) on the thing without knowing it. Luckily I had made it out of steel and had my new cast hitch on.

u should try the stuff from the outside of the camper trailer it will not just protect the wood from rot it will give it the amazing looking and waterproof it and stainless steel sheet metal lasts longer than wood

You should put an electric conversion kit on your bicycle. It will really help with the hills. Cheap lead acid batteries would easily fit in the trailer so you wouldn't have to break the bank on lithium batteries.
Since it is now 5+ years after video was uploaded you may no longer monitor this, but would like to ask if the hitch shown in the video stood up to wear & tear over time, and whether there was anything you changed or updated to the hitch assembly after it'd been used for awhile? - Really good, smart trailer. I use a two-leg stand to keep the bike upright. Vastly better than a sidestand, especially when a trailer is pushing the bike a bit. Also you might one day enjoy learning to weld metals. - For about fifty years I worked only with wood, but then got a welder - marvellous extra abilities. If you do, get a wire-feed welder, they're easier to use than a stick welder. - I recently built a box trailer a bit like yours. I just put a box on top of an ordinary $30 hand truck. (I did a vid on that hand truck type 'cheat' trailer, and was amazed that although very simple, it's got 150,000 hits. See 'World's Cheapest, Strongest Bicycle Trailer' Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.

Your hitch system is simple genius.
John Roberts- you can use a heat gun to heat up the pvc until it flexes and then mold it to what ever you want.

had you though of using vehicle marking tap on all 4 corners to show the size at night or in day light it acts like a hi vis vest on your trailer ???
