    It's interesting how many documents count as photo ID - so many people people don't have a driver's license or passport!

    Ooh this feels so different from voting in the Netherlands. Here everyone eligible to vote gets sent a voting pass, no registration needed. But then the rules for ID seem a bit stricter here, it has to be an official ID (passport, ID card or driver's license) and can not be something like a bus pass. Very interesting differences!

      That's just it. There's some context here I didn't go into. The Conservative party were VERY against introducing citizen ID cards. It was too European, too intrusive, too much of an invasion of privacy etc. But then the same politicians who opposed ID cards brought in a requirement for photo ID to vote 'to prevent fraud'. The only issue is, the only photo ID they accepted was a passport or driving license. So if you didn't have one of those, like a lot of poor/minority people don't, how could you vote? Well of course those people don't typically vote Conservative so they didn't really care about that. We had veterans turning up to vote with a veterans ID card that wasn't accepted. Pensioners bus passes were accepted but not those for students. It was a mess. Even the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, WHO INTRODUCED THIS LAW, was turned away from voting in a local government election because he didn't bring photo ID 🤦🏻‍♀️ they've now added more things to the list of accepted ID but it was never really about fraud it was about voter suppression. I also imagine the rules with change again with the next government 😂

      @@RetroClaudeIt’s… interesting, shall we say, that it’s your Conservative party that engages in voter suppression, considering that our conservative Republican party in the US does the same thing. In our federal system, each state makes its own voting rules (within certain Constitutional limits) and the voting experience can be very different in Republican states and Democratic ones. Here in my Democratic state, they’ve repeatedly made it easier to vote throughout my adulthood. You can register at the polls if you feel so inclined, any person can vote by mail for any reason and you can actually register to receive a mail-in ballot automatically for every election, and my favorite change, my county now lets us go to any polling place instead of only our assigned one (hooray, it was so annoying to walk past multiple polling places to get to mine!). In certain Republican states it’s the opposite and they keep trying to make it harder to vote. That’s where you see the news stories about people standing in line for hours because they deliberately did not open enough polling places, or politicians refusing to allow vote by mail even during the height of covid, or the repeated court cases as they attempt to require ID to vote only to be reminded that’s still unconstitutional.

      @@RetroClaude wow that's quite the story, I had no idea! Thanks for explaining, I hope things will get better after the election 🤞

      It also matters that you're legally required to have photo ID in the Netherlands. Very strange when I moved to a place where the general-use government issued ID doesn't have a photo on it.

    Voting is important. We had communal election and european parlament election 2 weeks ago and we had participant counts around 63% population. Thats a record, but still just over half of our country. Please, UK, do better than germany. Being able to vote is a treasure our generation/time of living has, value it accordingly as best as you can.
    And you look tired Claude, feel hugged and tucked in bed if needed

    This was really interesting. I'm in the states, and people get all discombobulated here when talking about voter ID.

    I don't get a vote here, despite living here 2 decades. Also the fact ID has to be valid is confusing, since a valid ID is one that's in date....but it doesn't have to be in date, so it just needs to be an OFFICIAL ID but not actually valid.....😂

    • @MrsBrit1
      @MrsBrit1 3 місяці тому

      I'm also confused about how one can use a BRP as their ID because someone with a BRP would not be able to vote....🤔 I know I cant....unless something has changed VERY recently....

      I know!! That's partly my fault I should have said something like accepted or qualifying but it's all so confusing no wonder I got all tripped up!

      To be fair, they seem to make things confusing.

      Also, I've had other things here say you need a valid ID but they're fine with it being out of date, so I think they do that in purpose....like we had to reapply for stuff through the council and they said they wouldn't accept my US passport, as it's out of date, but I took it anyways and they accepted it. 🙄
