I watched this too. No lies detected. Black visibility is not Black power and I agree that symbolism without substance is meant to anesthesize us from destroying the condition that made the symbolism necessary 👏🏾

I agree in general but representation can improve a child's self esteem and sense of self in a racialized society. It's not going to create mass radical change, but it can definitely be an approach on an individual level when used correctly as a parenting tool to build confidence in a child, especially a black child. It works like having a role model except on a societal level, so it shows that society is capable of seeing you in a positive way.
Not a solution but not useless either.

Visibility is one element of power. It's just not sufficient by itself to empower us to control our social, political, and economic reality. It's only a small part of one of the 6-9 elements that we require, but IT IS a PART.

I had my own issues with the documentary but I feel like you looked over a lot of things. For one this is a doll meant for children (and obviously adult collectors who enjoy it) There is nothing wrong with little girls having dolls that look like them. They should.
Second of all, the comment about needing to see something in order to dream about it wasn’t necessarily delivered in the best way, but I understood what they meant. Obviously if I wanted to be a doctor in this day and age it’s achievable and I don’t need a doll to understand that. However sometimes representation is more about fostering a sense of community. Again, as a Black woman in this day and age, if I wanted to learn how to ride a horse I can do that without needing to see another Black woman doing it or even a Barbie doing it. But it is about finding others who you can relate to. Maybe I’m into goth music or mountain climbing. Maybe I want to find other Black women who love cats as much as I do because all I ever see is Black folks who have dogs. Representation isn’t necessarily supposed to be the key to ending all oppression. But it’s not worthless. It can let you know that even within the Black community, you can find your tribe.
