I started out the same way. I was miserable when my parents dropped me off to race practice because it was so boring and repetitive and I would sneak out of practice and shred the terrain park. my parents soon figured out I was skipping practice and they signed me up for the free ski team I excelled and am now too 30 in the nation for freestyle skiing in my age group. Thanks mom!!
Love your videos man, know jack about skiing or snowboarding and haven't ever had the chance to go. Listening to someone so passionate and knowledgeable about something I don't have a clue about is weirdly relaxing. Love your videos, you are a lit UA-cam. Wish you the best.
man, this got real for me. the last two years saw me surviving four comas. i had no idea that’s what life had in store for me, but let me tell you… i’m so grateful just to be here now. and i feel so much camaraderie with people who have been through insane medical ordeals and keep on trucking and staying positive. i discovered your channel before seeing this, but this video’s cemented it. one of my favs now for sure!
All for the love of the sport... I respect it bro, I've had 6 concussions from snowboarding and yet I still continue to go out there and shred. Huuuuge respects!

Discovered you cause of Riders Republic. Was always interested with skiing, although never really had a chance to capitalize on that interest since...well there's no snow anywhere near the Philippines haha. Anyway, i basically went for the Riders Republic vids and stayed for your ski knowledge and experience my man. You have found a fan in me, hope the back issues wont ever come forth again brodie, stay awesome and cheers.
I recently fractured my T5 T6 and T7 vertebrae in a downhill race and I’ve been in a brace for a few weeks now so it’s nice to be able to somewhat relate to you
Get better soon homie, I fractured my t6 in a role over a few years ago, even with a very minor fracture I wasn't even allowed to jog for months, now my back goes out easily af even after years of building the muscle back and stretching, that shit is no joke
Anthony Mullings Thank you I’m actually out of my brace for almost a month now and I was able to take a few light days skiing and getting back yo normal
Dawg I had an injury two years back exactly like your first break. Fractured my L5 after overshooting a cliff by 20 feet. Definitely a humbling moment. Luckily never lost feeling in my legs but was in really bad pain and problems for a long while (and a bit still to this day). Glad you were able to take a step back and re-evaluate things. Takes a man to do that. Keep up the banger content!
Hey brotha been watching a bunch of your vids and landed on this one today. My junior year of high school I fractured my L5S1 in football and then again during the wrestling season (didn’t listen to my doctor). This vid really resonated with me and after watching your channel I feel the urge to start trying to do more on my skis. Have had the fear of really injuring my back for past 5 years and that kept me away from jumps and rails. But I think it’s finally time work past that fear and start having fun again.
Avid Snowboarder here... Just wanted to say I'm a huge fan of your youtube page! Keep up the good work, your passion for skiing is contagious. I have a herniated disc in my thoracic back(from a job injury) and chronic whiplash from snowboarding. I certainly can't quite feel your pain in some terms, but I do have a lot of pain for the rest of my life, just gotta push through it, and stay positive! You seem to have such a great attitude about everything! God Bless ya homie!
Damn bro, feels weird to see how vulnerable we can be sometimes huh.. I broke my shoulder a year ago and I'm still not able to do the same stuff as before. I feel ya
Dude, I had a nasty grade 2 spondy to my L5 after a number of ignored stress fractures playing a sport in college. Popped it in the weight room and had the leg thing happen... Scariest and most bizarre feeling ever. Ski career took a huge hit as a result so its really motivating to see you back out there. Love the x games commentary too, been watching them all week!
Damn dude. Made me think back to my own skiing injury. Long story short, exploded both of my shins and broke my left arm clean in half at the same time at 14. End of my skiing "career" right there. Luckily the only lasting effects are lack of rotation in my left wrist and some back problems caused by my spine being compressed so much i lost over an inch of my height. Might sound sucky, but honestly the older i get the more i realize how lucky i am to still have a normal enogh life. Still able to ski casually, though my shins are quite mangled so ski-boots arent excactly comfortable
I'm a horse rider and I broke my pelvis 3 months ago and I always think about what could've happened and it's actually the worst feeling ever (gives me a panicky feeling about getting back on the horse lmao)
damn bro. Seein u hittin the park at norquay under the cascade lift caught me off guard since ive been sking there all my life. Im from banff and pretty dope how ive skied the same place as the legend. Great video man keep up the great content.
Damn I Broke my back on a 12 feet cliff flat and icy landing 1 month ago.... 2 vertebraes broken it's long but I'm better now. I'm just so sad that I have forcked up my season. I need more learning of the moutain and how to analyse my lines. You're a real passionate and you're an inspiration. Big up from France
I fell off a ladder 5 months ago at work and a metal pole scratched my left eye on the way to the ground. Most terrifying moment in my life waking up after, drenched in blood not knowing if im ever going to see from that eye again... Im still on my way to a full recovery, but the Lord is great 🙏 Relieved to know you too have been given another chance 🙏
Nice medals! I got a couple small NASTAR bronze and silver badges skiing in the 90s til I got the calling to the darkside. Glad your back is better, thats a rough ticket man. Banff is God's country! Keep hydrating ya legend.
I'm a skater and I've been dealing with back problems since I was 16 and got a unaddressed compression fracture in my lower lumbar. now I'm 25 and have been off the board for about two or three months now with a herniated disc. the herniation is partly caused by the compression fracture in my back that I never got taken care of and healed improperly. This last time it happened I was skating and I didn't even fall just kind of stomped my trick hard and like you said I walked up the bank and sat down and when I went to stand up I couldn't. let me tell you that is the most terrifying thing I've experienced. I've broken both my feet my ankle and wrists and this is by far my worst and scariest injury. I could barely walk for the first month and my legs would just give out in excruciating pain randomly. recently I've been doing better going to physical therapy and trying to get the disc to go back in place/ regain strength in my back muscles. its definitely been a struggle and at times very discouraging and dark but hearing you talk about your experience made me feel a little bit better. even if we may never see what could've been without the injuries just knowing that its possible to heal and at least be able to still do what you love is reassuring. love the content, you made me start playing steep!!
Damn man, I broke my back back in March but unluckily I damaged my spinal cord too. I’ve been cruisin in a wheelchair since and am determined to walk again but listening to this I related to your feelings of freestyle so much!
Great video!! I love skiing, but more of a mtb rider and I have several injuries from dislocating C5 & C6 Vertebraes, multiple broken ribs (the worst pain ever) to just recently I broke my C7 in my neck and my L2 L3 in my lower back. Doctors said my park days are probably done and that I am lucky that I am not paralyzed. Your video gave me hope that I will still be able to ride and ski. Thanks Bro!!
I was a 3x CNISF (California Nevada interscholastic ski federation) state champ. Freshman, junior and senior year. Sophomore year i was in a near fatal accident at Northstar after our last hs GS race before states. Was convinced to take one more run before lunch. Was on the backside doing high GS speed. Went over a blind knoll and a Jerry had stopped below and couldn't be seen from more than about 10 ft away. Lit him up like a linebacker. Put my helmet into his chest. He broke 5 ribs, clavicle in 3 spots, bruised his heart and had to be life flighted. I was knocked out for over 30 mins and shattered my radial and ulna in my left arm. Had 2 plates and 18 screws put in. Suffered a moderate, borderline severe TBI. Concussion protocols were very different in 1997. I had already had a pretty bad concussion less than 2 months earlier during football season. Lost my USSA points so I went to new Zealand that summer for some FIS races to try and get my points back and I knocked myself silly again. I had at least 3 bad concussions from fall to the hat summer. It changed me mentally. Stopped working out seriously and tried to rely on talent. Which is fine for a 30 sec Boreal SL but if you try to ski a world cup caliper run without legs of steel you will get crushed, no matter how talented you are.
20 plus years and still love skiing. never raced or freestyled but love the pow. It will be a tough year to get the to mountain his year but the snow will come. enjoy : ) when you can make it down to washington state we have some of the best snow and terrain you can find without the big resort mountain vibes. SEND IT!!!
Burst fractured my T12 skiing on leap day 2020 (tad ironic). The vertebrae is squished to about 40% of its original size, and there's bits of vertebrae floating around my spine,, but somehow fully recovered within around 3 months with no surgery. Haven't been skiing since because covid and life, but can't wait to hit the slopes again.
I collapsed my T6 and fractured T7 when I was 21 there is no words to help describe to people the problems breaking vertebrae causes I was going about business for about 2 months before the doctors finally did a proper scan and found out. My back has never properly healed, fatigue is now a constant part of my life and I'm 33, struggle to work more than part time but I'm otherwise pretty healthy and can still walk and my body functions as intended which I am grateful for ;)
I actually feel you buddy. In 2017 i broke 2 of my lumbar vertebrae in an avalanche right on the day my training for being a ski instructor started. I had to cancel all of it and had two surgeries in two weeks. After that they brought me home and I just stayed in my bed for a month. They said I shouldn’t ski again but after a year and a slow start into it I’m now able to hit jumps again. I’m was so happy
last year fractured my right femur at the end of a skateboarding sesh, and boyyyy did i feel it. from the moment i fell, all the way to the ambulance ride to the hospital, i was in so much pain. the worst was probably right after the adrenaline wore off, my entire body slowly slipped into almost an epileptic fit, both my leg started cramping since id been skating for 3 hours straight at the same time which made me panic which caused it to hurt even more, and then the cramps spread to my arms, i lost complete control over my hands and fingers which started contorting and convulsing and all i could do was scream in agony. worst injury of my life, not sure why people say it for goodluck
Yikes.. good story man. Broke my collar bone a few months ago mountain biking.. i had waited a few days.. realized man, my thumb hurts more.. 5 days later went in and ya, thumb was broken clean across in 3 places 😅... all healed now and sending it again for the ski season 😉
i feel you man. im 25 and have had 2 shoulder replacement surgeries within the course of 3 years (currently recovering from second) due to snowboarding slams. so hard to give it up though, especially when you're raised with it
Cracked 2 vertebrae during a season in Mayrhofen catching my tips on a nollie and landing on my head. Continued to ski for 2 more weeks until I couldn't get out of bed one morning. Went home for a month and then went back for the last couple weeks of the winter season. Went straight into the park and hit the big line only to sink into the slushy landing on a 360. I got flung forward and landed on my head again, breaking the bottom vertebrae in my neck. Had to give up on skiing after that but I am lucky enough to still be walking.
A few years back after a DH crash doctors told me that I had broken off a piece at L3 - L5. I thought they meant it is "somewhere there in-between" but I later found out that they meant that transverse processes had broken off from L3, L4 and L5! :o 2 weeks sick leave lol, luckily only temporary pain and no other symptoms. It was the first time I was wearing "body armor", gave me too much confidence.
i know about breaking something on the hill. Broke my arm in february 22, and what you said around 11:30 makes total sense. the adrenaline punches you, then sometime later, it just all hits and you collapse.
had to learn how to walk 3 times have a torn meniscus and still pulling bakies. stay strong my board brother. would love to have you as my coach. that change my life.
ive been going through a very similar injury. I haven't been skiing since Jan of 2020 and I haven't been able to to my job as a ski area operator either. Currently im getting my bachelors degree in leadership and management and hopefully getting back to take my first turns back on skis this year.
Dude bruh I have been seeing some of ur vids recently and this one is great! Content aside, your delivery is super good and my goodness very funny. Could you be a stand up ski comedian?
Nice! I'm Scandinavian so i was practically born on skis. In winter everything would freeze so the only way to truly explore the world was through cross country skiing. Setting course down river and arriving at the archipelago felt magical. I still remember the first time i made it all the way to the baltic. Seeing that flat, white plain of ice continue on to the horizon inspired me to go further. I climbed the highest hills of the largest islands to see the world shrink beneath me, once at the top i'd find eagle nests. I'd rest, eating a sausage sandwich as i looked down on the little town with my binoculars. I'd venture far into the forest finding the sunlit glades where moose would rest. I'd pass ancient tombs, i'd cross frozen rapids. Cross country skiing was, is and will forever be the best open world RPG ever designed.
I broke my first bone a few months ago at work back in August 2022. I broke the Distil Phalanx bone (end of my left index finger/pointer finger). Broke it near the tip of the finger cause the distil phalanx starts about mid way up to the tip/end of finger. What happened was I was trying to lift a huge block at work, it was obviously too heavy so I dropped it and it came down somehow, someway onto my finger and crushed the hell out of it. Major major major pain right away, and a huge amount of numb feeling. I couldn't feel my finger, couldn't bend it for that moment and was bleeding everywhere cause the crush injury actually cut a very tiny piece of my finger off near the tip around the fingerprint area. Needless to say I kept working after an hour of rest in the break room and never went to get stitches so it bled for 4 or 5 days off and on. I finally went a month later exactly like 30 days later in September for a X-ray and I found out I broke my finger. I had been complaining about feeling something sharp whenever I press that finger down on a flat surface, something like a rock or something but it's in my finger (bone fragment or bone now broke and cut off in a weird way). The doctor said it's a tuft fracture meaning it will heal itself and dont need injury. Still to this day I feel that rock when I press my finger down hard on a surface. My finger looks mostly normal no one would know unless I told them, or they take a close inspection. Anyhow, that's my first bone break at age 32, I got lucky cause it was the end of my finger so not too bad. I wasn't lying when said i'm the type of guy to break a bone and keep working....
Funny to hear that you have freestyle ski team over there. Here in Finland that really doesn't exist and people just go to the park and learn to do tricks their own. Still we have produced quite many good atheletes in freestyle snowboard and ski.
Got cutoff on a step down at mount winsport in Calgary, put the brakes on to late and cased the jump straight legged and compressed 2 vertebrae in my neck. Wasn’t painful but ended up spending 2 months in a collar at 13 years old
Just stumbled on your video. I don’t ski. Don’t snowboard. Don’t know who you are. You are an amazing story teller that was super interesting and entertaining! I’m subscribing
Yooo this commentary is legendary hahahaha. Edit: I broke something in my lower back/tailbone last week snowboarding, the title got me haha. Edmonton as well?!?!
Dude come ski at sun peaks. I will literally put you up dude and the pitchers will also always be an option. Teaching freestyle is the best job in the entire world. I see myself doing it for many more years to come.
I live in Calgary and I have a house in Banff and I know all of those Banff ski resorts, I mostly ski at Lake Louise, I’ve been to sunshine ones and Norquay this year was the first ski resort that opened in Banff and I want to go to Norquay this year
What you had was a SOL at the L5 level. SOL means Space Occupying Lesions and it describe the process of something « blood, edema, hernia, & tumor. Generally, we do not worry when 1 leg gets numb as it can be the sciatic nerve on that side or more commonly a lumbar nerve that get compressed. When both legs are involved it’s because your spinal cord is involved including the cauda equina. Generally, patients gets operations straight away as it is a medical emergency. If you can feel your inner thighs, can control your bladder, and or sphincters, call 911. Take care buddy
You don’t need to apologise for making the vid that long. How are you supposed to tell this story any shorter. I found it to be the perfect length for a topic like this. If someone doesn’t like long videos like this they can simply switch it off. Love your content buddy. Keep it coming.
I’ve always like how straightforward and to the point his videos are, and this was the same, you really can’t fit a life story into a quick 5 min video
Great video! I have had the same experience myself. About two years ago i went skiing almost everyday as well as playing basketball at the same time. After almost every session my back was hurting a lot and i didn't really think anything about it but one time my back was in so much pain i couldn't really walk and i was like, something must be wrong. Well we went to see a doctor and we found out that my L5 was broken on both sides and i was immediately not allowed to do any sports. Well it healed almost fully and i after that i probably started doing stuff too fast because like a month later it was hurting like a bitch again. Well it healed ALMOST FULLY again and i was back doing everything imaginable. Then a couple of months went by and i was happy playing basketball in the summer but it starts hurting again. I immediately knew what it was and i was just so mad. I chose to quit basketball because i just didn't want to fracture my vertebra anymore. This season has been the best one ever even tho my L5 is never going to fully heal back to what it was. I just have to live with it. Luckily it doesn't hurt that much anymore. Skiing is the best thing ever!
Sunshine was my first mountain! I've always loved elkwater by medicine hat for their terrain park, it's damn good considering the hill has all of 5 or 6 runs
@@ollyunwin4327 I started rotating a three too early, already at 180 on the take off, it killed my speed, landed on the knuckle back first. Broke a couple ribs, but will hopefully be able to ski in a week or two. The crazy thing is I already landed like 10 3's already
As a racer who has mounted myself on top of the podium a couple of times as well, never before have I been so offended by something I 100% agree with. Cannot lie in this comment section.
I'm going through a lot of this.. my leg is useless. My therapy and exercise was hiking and camping and going way out in the middle of no where.. now I struggle with small inclines and I kinda just feel.. as useless as my leg is

It will be a tough year to get the to mountain his year but the snow will come. enjoy : ) when you can make it down to washington state we have some of the best snow and terrain you can find without the big resort mountain vibes. SEND IT!!!
Nick, you are actually so good at telling stories. Please do more.
I broke my back when I was younger too, about 20/21.
I feel this story.
31 and still riding.
5 days later went in and ya, thumb was broken clean across in 3 places 😅... all healed now and sending it again for the ski season 😉
isnt 6 years old kind of late to start skiing? or am i just austrian
i feel you man. im 25 and have had 2 shoulder replacement surgeries within the course of 3 years (currently recovering from second) due to snowboarding slams. so hard to give it up though, especially when you're raised with it
I can relate to trying to switch from ski racing to freestyle... except at 19... a litttttle late.
Just finishing up with recovery from breaking my back 🤘took about 8 months. Can’t wait to get back on skis.
The 76 people that disliked this video are the construction workers that had to finish shoveling that gravel. Great video broskii
That first part of the video before you broke your back kind of inspired me to try to overcome my fear of big jumps
I've broken my first bone and I still cant cork. Hopefully this bodes well 🙏🏻
Yooo i need more story time with steepsteep :D I enjoyed that video man!
I don‘t play steep a lot these days but that doesn‘t stop me from loving this chanel :)
The smallest injuries are the most painful. I fractured my pinky and oh boy worst pain ive ever felt
Positive love this. I’m in ski racing now 13 years old and I also feel like getting into freestyle. Follow your passion.
had to learn how to walk 3 times have a torn meniscus and still pulling bakies. stay strong my board brother. would love to have you as my coach. that change my life.
are you in Med School, because that vocab was INSANE
ive been going through a very similar injury. I haven't been skiing since Jan of 2020 and I haven't been able to to my job as a ski area operator either. Currently im getting my bachelors degree in leadership and management and hopefully getting back to take my first turns back on skis this year.
I went to banff for a week to ski, it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen
actually hyped ur back is better. btw ima become a coach at sunridge now because of you perspective on it
Dude bruh I have been seeing some of ur vids recently and this one is great! Content aside, your delivery is super good and my goodness very funny. Could you be a stand up ski comedian?
I think my parents are the reason I love skining, they have taken me to the slopes from When I was 2 years old.
Cross country skiing was, is and will forever be the best open world RPG ever designed.
love the positivity and the content bro. keep it up bro👑
Bro…. Enjoyed the story. Happy to see you enjoying the venture of UA-cam 😁 inspired to put the shovel down and shred some more 😂
12:09 exploded
@steepsteep can we do top 5 crossblocks
Bro please keep uploaded you are too funny just binged all your vids!❤️
Grew up snowboarding at all these hills, mainly sunshine. Incredible mountain
hey buddy love the coated could you make a video of every thing you ski on like boots skis and that stuff thanks
if he doesnt make the vid i can help you out a bit, he rides on3ps and im assuming (not sure about boots) full tilts or lange’s.
this guys amazing deserves more subs
your first competition was at norquay! Thats sick! I grew up learning how to ski on that hill then I started going to Sunshine and Lake Louise!
Dude come ski at sun peaks. I will literally put you up dude and the pitchers will also always be an option. Teaching freestyle is the best job in the entire world. I see myself doing it for many more years to come.
bring out more content outside of skis man you have a knack for this
I live in Calgary and I have a house in Banff and I know all of those Banff ski resorts, I mostly ski at Lake Louise, I’ve been to sunshine ones and Norquay this year was the first ski resort that opened in Banff and I want to go to Norquay this year
I was dying at 9:27 lol
Slinkie video next?
crazy how much dedication you have to ur sport, tramp stuff is generally way safer
@@burntgrass8066 Yeah that’s simply impossible.
Bro nick you just got to get good
You just mad bc bad
Lmao I m kidding your my fav UA-cam
Also please make more of these
I used to race at Norway and now I’m with a freestyle team at lake Louise, I also went from racing to freestyle when I was thirteen
Steep u should tell Ubisoft to add avalanches in rr
Love you dude and I’m so happy for u
You seem like someone I would want as a homie 🙏
Great video, I like the new format👍
Sunshine was my first mountain! I've always loved elkwater by medicine hat for their terrain park, it's damn good considering the hill has all of 5 or 6 runs
I got the wind knocked out of me a week ago and a really messed up back after landing a couple other threes. Still can’t ski :(
how did it happen and how long ago man? Hope you heal fast...
My therapy and exercise was hiking and camping and going way out in the middle of no where.. now I struggle with small inclines and I kinda just feel.. as useless as my leg is
I loved skiing in the Banff area. I'm from an island so every time I go skiing in February I make the most of it lol
I just found out from my doctor that I have scoliosis, ironic you post this the next day 😂
Did my first iron cross today stoked to hear your story
All the best park skiers start with racing I did the same thing with you for like 4 years
