Verypink Knitting Lady you are THE answer lady. I'm a guy who wove for 25+ years and can not weave for a while due to a torn rotator cuff. Knitting has saved my sanity as I do not know how to live without fiber in my daily life. THIS happened to me on my first dishcloth after having finished a knitting class. The lady that taught the class HIGHLY recommended you! THANK YOU VERY much for being "here" and I SINCERELY mean that! - Tom
Well, though I knew how to do the technique in this video, I always watch your new videos, and I was rewarded by learning the term for something I've been doing all along: tinking (or as I've been calling it, "knitting back"). The funny thing is that I've seen the term tinking several times in the past few weeks, and kept losing the mental note I left myself to google it! I NEVER rip back my work to a mistake, no matter how far back it is, I just feel like yarn stays nicer by . . . ok, here we go, TINKING!! Thanks, Staci, you made my day!
Great video. This happens all too often and you'll be pleased to know that I do indeed throw a fit!! Drives me nuts. Usually it happens with acrylic less expensive yarn. I have recently had it happen multiple times in one particular yarn. I am going to contact the company. I have recently purchased some fine wool and alpaca yarns. So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed. Will use spit splice if it happens. Love that fix. Thanks for addressing thus issue.
I have actually come up with a "spit splice" for acrylic yarn. Unravel the plies, twist them together as you would with animal fibre, and when you have something that looks reasonable, go over that grafted area with an iron to fuse the ends together a bit. Works perfectly for me every time.
+Caresse Garcia Well, if it works, than it's a possible diy method! I didn't know this method could work for non animal fibers so I'm pretty excited to try it out for my next acrylic project
I've gotten a decent join with a felting needle on acrylic and on superwash wool. The needle helps to make a sturdy join and you can keep felting it down until it matches the thickness of a single strand to make it even more invisible.
Thanks for the video! The easiest thing that I do is always wind my yarn into balls (with a ball winder or by hand) if you keep one had on the yarn flowing into the ball/cake: you will feel any knots before you knit them into your work! :-)
I instinctively followed all the steps you mentioned before watching this video (including throwing a fit lol), but I didn't know the technique for tinking--I was just putting each live stitch back on the needle with my fingers. I'm so glad there is a better way. Thank you for another helpful video!
Thank you so much for your video. I did a square not to join in my new ball thinking it would never come undone (like it claimed) but after 2 full rounds on my top down raglan sweater I saw the knot untied and put a hole in my garment 😭 I had to go back and tink 2 rounds to join it like you mentioned in this video. It was hard but as this is my first garment I’ve ever knit I’m glad now as I learnt how to tink and I feel much more confident knitting 😅thank you!!
Ahhh Thank you!! I actually hit knots relatively often with the inexpensive "Red Heart" yarn (from Walmart) and its really quite annoying. As a fairly new knitter, I have had NO idea what to do with them and usually just try to work it so they're sitting in the back of the work. Most often it works, but a few times its caused me a lot of frustration getting it to STAY back there. Now, thanks to this, I know what to do next time.
Wow...I just can't say enough times how much I love your videos. I am SOOOO thankful I found you. Your videos are just amazing, and help me so much (and very often). THANK YOU!!!!!
Argh, just fount an ugly knot on one of the plys of my Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% Acrylic, 20% Wool), but I'm doing an all k2 p2 chunky hat so I'm in the middle of a huge round field of ribs.
so far i have found knots in cotton yarn and i was knitting a dress for a toddler, i use Russian join when ever i can but with cotton yarn i will try you video's Technic
I like to wind my yarn into a ball before knitting even if it's already in a ball or skein. That way I know if there are any knots, and if possible I can use the knotty ball in places like pockets or edging, where working with shorter pieces of yarn aren't an issue.
I am new to knitting but videos on your channel are helpful. I do love your channel. Could you please teach me what can I do when my knitting yarn gets run out while the knitting process is still working?
I demonstrate that in this video, but I also have another video that shows you how to change colors (and you can use this technique without changing colors): ua-cam.com/video/MZKNuDQNlmM/v-deo.html
After cutting out the knot, I just find a place where I can double the old and new yarn, then knit both at the same time for five stitches. Then I drop the end of the old yarn and keep going. I keep the ends on the back side. Whenever it's convenient, I then snip off the two ends (they're already woven in!).
Thanks for showing this video there are number of times when I would be knitting and then there is a knot. Now I know what to do next time there is a knot in my yarn.
This happened to a skein of slow changing variegating yarn I bought. And to make it feel even more insulting, I was doing entrelac knitting so one square looked really awkward. :( Great video!
Hai.. May you please make a video about the scarf that you wear? I find the written pattern but i find it hard to just knit using written pattern. Thank you
Ow! Thank you very very much! It video is very useful for me! Actually I love all your video and apply them in my projects! Thank you again and bless you!
How about doing a Magic Knot. So simple to do and it doesn't show in your work. I do it all the time when I add a new ball of yarn. You could do the Magic Knot for this problem also.
Thanks for the video!! Have you ever thought of doing a tutorial for the two color brioche stitch? I'm interested and there aren't any really helpful videos I can find.
This video should help - it explains how to recover a dropped stitch, whether you've dropped it on purpose or by accident: ua-cam.com/video/BnTH56geOpo/v-deo.html
I assume this would be less likely to happen if you balled the yarn before you started to project - do you prefer to knit from balls or skeins? A friend and I have been debating the advantages of each.
It is likely that the knot will show in your sweater...so, yes. Best to undo the work and cut out the knot, and reattach new yarn in a place that won't show.
The Survival Mom - you don't have to worry much about a knot when you're going to felt the knit. If you're planning to fully felt it, where you can no longer see stitch definition, you can always use scissors trim down any knot ends that show without damaging the fabric.
I had to google for this video as fast as I could, because right now I am working on the ribbing for my first sock on DPNs and I see in the middle of my yarn, just barely poking out, is the rage inducing knot. I know my yarn is from walmart but whhhhyyyy?! 8c
I really hate when this happens! I'm knitting lace with a ball of slow changing variegated yarn, and I had to scrap my whole first quarter because the distance that I would have had to think back would have made it look just terrible. Now I'm checking all of every ball before I begin. It is so ridiculous.
What are your thoughts on Russian joins? I've seen them and have seen that they don't detract anymore or less from the work, but have never done this myself. Was just curious to have a more experienced knitters point of view.
Thanks for this video! It answered a 2nd question that I had intended to go search for after this video! (i.e. how to attach a new ball of yarn to your work) 😄
While I always love your videos, I have to say my favorite part here is your nail polish color! WOW! Any way you can easily recall what color that is? :)
+Amanda Michelle Holmes - thank you. I always list my nail polish color in the video description field, just below the video: The nail color I'm wearing is CND Shellac polish, in color "Midnight Swim".
+Line Madsen - yes Russian Join is a good way to invisibly remove a knot and rejoin the yarn, depending on your fiber type. Here is my video on three different ways to join yarn: ua-cam.com/video/rQ4_kM8czew/v-deo.html
and know you have the ugly knot at the edge of your work or thos smaller projects. so all you've really done is just moved the knot, and not really solved the problem at all.
Great idea for a video! Love your new glasses. Oh -- and on a hilariously embarrassing note, the ad that popped up at the beginning asked me how big my prostrate was. Was it because I'm a dude? Or a middle-aged dude? Or was it because the video was about "knots"...
Hmm....I'm going to go ahead and make a wild guess here...not many of the people who are watching my videos are seeing advertisements asking them about their prostate. :) The UA-cam advertising algorithm has figured out that you're a dude.
Are you not able to see the difference? Knitting with yarn that is knotted is different from knitting with yarn that is NOT knotted, then tying a knot at the back of the work.

I've done this with a lighter before. Very abruptly of course so as not to cause a fire - maybe I shouldn't even mention this lol

Should I use this process when attaching a new ball of cotton yarn, too?
You just saved my life, thank you, you absolute queen
Thank you for giving me permission to throw a fit 😂. So annoyed that this happened to me tonight, but I really appreciate the help! New subscriber :).

Wish I knew this before I decided to carry on knitting. Atleast I could push the knot to the back where it's barely noticeable.

Thanks for showing this video there are number of times when I would be knitting and then there is a knot. Now I know what to do next time there is a knot in my yarn.
Can you show us what to do if it is in the middle of a long row? Do you always tink back to the beginning of the row?
Yes - the technique is the same, regardless of how far you have to tink back to correct it. That's why there is usually some cursing involved. :)
This happened to a skein of slow changing variegating yarn I bought. And to make it feel even more insulting, I was doing entrelac knitting so one square looked really awkward. :( Great video!

I assume this would be less likely to happen if you balled the yarn before you started to project - do you prefer to knit from balls or skeins? A friend and I have been debating the advantages of each.
I roll up yarn that I've purchased into balls so I can see ahead of time if there are knots or other mishaps.
love your nails!
it is a good way to fix the knot.thank you.
Whats the name of the knit in the picture?? Ive been looking for how to knit like that.
What if I'm knitting a big thing like pullover &the knot appear after the middle of the work, do I have to undo my work for the knot??
It is likely that the knot will show in your sweater...so, yes. Best to undo the work and cut out the knot, and reattach new yarn in a place that won't show.
I'm still learning, but know how to tink, and had to tink on a project. What do I do if I accidentally drop a stitch while tinking?
Get a crochet hook or another needle to hold your stitches, it's wonderfully easy that way. Just don't drop the hook/needle, haha.
Is it the same method for crochet or is there another way to do it?
Irma Ruiz - you can use these same methods for crochet.
Thank you
i had been brainwashed to never tie a knot in the work, but i guess that was wrong. i also learned that i wasn't tinking correctly. thank you again!
Would you recommend this for a piece that is going to be felted? In that case, wouldn't the knot just disappear into the felted fabric?
The Survival Mom - you don't have to worry much about a knot when you're going to felt the knit. If you're planning to fully felt it, where you can no longer see stitch definition, you can always use scissors trim down any knot ends that show without damaging the fabric.
Thanks for the response. That's what I had thought but definitely didn't want to end up with a hole in my finished piece.
