The Catholic Church in Ireland will be fine in the long run. Those who have left or aren't joining would have weakened it anyway. The Holy Spirit will guide the Church back to health by purifying it in time - he always has.

Any organization grouping people of similar irrational beliefs will exclude critical thinking and is ground to any abuse or crime it's authorities could see in it's self interest to ignore or promote.
This principle applies not only to religions, but also to armies, political parties, companies, social classes and age groups, etc.
Logical and rational thinking should be the most intensely taught and central core of our education curriculum.

    • @coreluminous

Most ordinary folk of Faith are decent people, and would be decent no matter what Faith they were born into. Religion is not a repository of healthy behaviour, that rests within the hearts of decent people.
What the issue with the Catholic Church is, in Ireland, is the manner in which the Church covered up and masked known predatory abuse, and protected itself and the abusers at the expense of the Survivors.
Given the scope of the Church's role in Social and Educational Care settings, schools, residential industrial school units, launderies, mothers and baby homes, etc their Power to suppress wider knowledge of the harm and management of same has had an adverse impact on tens of thousands of survivors over 70 year period, and this adverse impact flowed out through into survivors families, communities and businesses, with relationships afflicted by trauma.... generation after generation.
Both State and Church are responsible for those care settings and what happened within them.

@@coreluminous I would also say the scope of church control in ireland amounted to being the most powerful layer of the government at its peak.
It goes above the mother and baby homes, where the church had a grip on the freedom of speech and expression within Ireland for decades. From deporting an Irish man for running a non church involved dance hall, the decades of school control and abuse covering there, stoking up support for Franco during the Spanish civil war, and the control of women's rights for work and enforcing of a rigid structure until a few daces ago.
There's still a large portion of supposedly public irish land or buildings that have a church stake they won't relinquish.
The average person who is a church patron is bound to be decent and sound, as they are just another part of the populace, but the level of control the church had was suffocating and Ireland is better off for it being loosened.

@@celticlofts Christianity has been our religion for over a thousand years. Our written history began with the arrival of Christianity and most of the sources we have for paganism In Ireland was written by Christians. Wanting to erase thousands of years of cultural and religious development in our country is treasonous. Celtic crosses, trinity knots, insular art, lots of saints are all part of our culture and more. You have no celtic pagan bible, temple, and the only thing you have is stories written down by Christians about pagan gods and archaic traditions. The Irish Celts were pagan for about 1400 years, we have been Christian for around 1600 years. The Irish flag represents Christians, our national holiday celebrates our conversion to Christianity.

Most recently the pope has agreed to bless gay couples, effectively putting his stamp of approval on their behavior, by failing to warn them that the homosexual act is an abomination, and they will most surely die in their sins lest they repent.
