Great repair, Dave! I'm psyched to see that old faithful running again and given another lease on life. As I noted (and you mentioned in the video), that machine is no runway model and came to me with that physical damage in 2010. But it has been a flawless beast for me now for 12 or so years....that is until that tape transport problem, so it has sat still for about 3 years. But because it has recorded 100+ tapes for me perfectly, and played back many, many more, I hoped it be worth going through the trouble of fixing this issue. And it appears it was worth it! I knew it played/recorded great when running so I had faith. Awesome!! I appreciate your work, and videos.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone actually fix a DTR - ever. They were generally built having 3 pounds of crap in a 2 pound box making it impossible to fix without doing micro surgery. Tons of inhuman patience and insanely dexterous hands are necessary; I have neither. Nice job 👍
5 Man Electrical band was a favorite of mine back in the 70's. "Signs" was a huge hit down here in the States. Still like their music. Thanks for their shoutout!
So according to vern Craig the guitarist the song was penned while riding the bus down I5 heading to capital records in LA to record. It was in reference to all the billboards along the highway. It was never intended to be recorded. Just the guys passing the time. The manager on board recorded it and played it for a record company exec who asked, no demanded they record it. The band objected saying it was a garbage song but their manager convinced them to record. It went to the top of the charts. The follow up hit was absolutely right and that was was directed at their manager with respect to their suffering opinions of signs. "You were absolutely right and I was wrong" and it also became a big hit. Vern gave me a copy of the 2 CD release "first sparks" from the bands early years from their start known as the staccatos 5 man electrical band which was their original name. The dropped staccatos. It's actually not bad. They had a beach boya sound in their early years. He moved a dozen years but i still get his jokes by email. One day i asked why he left the band right at the time signs was a hit and he said some of the members were getting into hard drugs so he left and went into advertising.
I have had soo much audio equipment in my life, I also repair. The only Digital tapedeck I have ever had was a DCC-82 marantz recorder. I have Never had a DAT tapedeck. These were troublesome in the 90's. The mechanisms made by Sony were always very beautifull. Not always that reliable unfortunately.
Seeing these things work is quite interesting. I never got into the format, tho. I heard they can be quite troublesome besides the fact they consist of a lot of unobtanium
At 40:23 that background music is the same as the company I worked for 20 years ago and was on their phone line on hold system. when I hear it I get the twitches :)
*Can anyone advise , I have a Sanyo svhs 1991 midmount. I can't get power in the psu to the secondary side of the board , the primary side shows 230v (u.k) on multimeter It is separated by a transformer, I have replaced mostly all capacitor and diodes that were leaking but it still won't power up* 😢
Thanks Dave. Tell me about that Sound effect I hear a lot of in the Background in a lot of Your Videos. Sounds like a Beer Bottle Cap being popped off and landing on a Bar top HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Haven't heard the Duck Quack Fart in a while either... Mike M..
Before you even started working on the deck in this video, when I saw the model, I *expected* it would be bad clips on the posts. I own a PCM-R300 deck, which has the same exact mechanism as the DTC-A6. It had those same cracked clips, which I found that could not be ordered anymore from Sony. (I also *knew* that the clip was missing on *your* loading gear, because I experienced the same issue of it threading reliably upside down but not right-side up. It’s a pattern failure!). Not being as inventive as you to make your own clip, I bought a broken “parts” deck off eBay for parts to salvage mine. While I am a technician on broadcast equipment (cameras, Betacam decks, etc.), probably about your age, I had never serviced a DAT machine until watching your videos (starting years ago), and several years back you had a PCM-R300 apart, so at the time I learned from you how to get into the mechanism, and I saw the cracked clips on mine. Why they didn’t just use a cut washer sitting into a notch on the posts, I don’t know. you’d think that would’ve been cheaper AND more reliable. But maybe they were trying to build obsolescence in.
I had one that used that junk mech and I sold it years ago. All 3 if my Sony's use the other mech with the rotary encoder 2 are DTC 75ES and the other a 790 if i remember. Or was that a 680. One had the junk mech this has and i got 50 bucks for it.
When individuals who has years of experience that can repair old tech aren't around anymore. Who can fix it then?? I doubt that some of this old tech will be useless by then.
@12voltvids I believe in reparing old stuff but the new tech is made to throw away and buy another one that is already obsolete even before it hits the store shelves.
Couple of questions Dave: my own SONY DAT machine has no display and no sound...can you give some pointers to look into? What make/model is that digital watch of yours mate? Love your work, keep those videos coming!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Can you tell me the music on your test? Tape, I know it's the old spice music, but I can't remember it's called and that sony machines are pain in the arse, I don't like them i have 2 tascom s though the sony professional ones are very expensive,
sometimes the eject and close wont work unless i give it aa push or tap, i thought it was a belt issue so i replaced it, still the same, so i will give does contacts a clean

Yes it working great. I ran a few 2 hour tapes through it last night. I'll look at the Walkman when I get in the shop next week.

Tape is dead but somedays I wish it wasn’t. I miss all the cool equipment
Dave: Didn't SONY use cob washers for holding the gears on place ? I never imagined them using plastic retainers!😮
Cut washers were common. This I've used clips though.
@@12voltvids Which one you favor?

I guess nobody will be fixing old stuff then. There are not many if us still doing this now.
@12voltvids love your channel. Don't ever change till you can't do what you do anymore.
I can only do this as long as people want to fix stuff. That supply is drying up as 95% just toss and buy new stuff from China.

@@12voltvids cheers, could they be checked in circuit?
Yes check for voltage with meter

All the music on the test tape is from musicbakery.com. All royalty free.
Big box for such a small mechanism. The circuit board takes up most of the space.
