If it was, they'd have the same speed, and the plane would never catch up to the carrier. Headwinds help, and the speed of the carrier into the wind helps additionally.

I knew a guy in England that joined the RAF in the 80s and he was flying Jaguars after only a couple of years going from a single prop trainer to a twin then to fighter. There was no degree perse you just went into officer training at the airforce equivalent to Sandhurst i believe. It's moved more to a bachelor degree in pretty much everything now so it doesn't surprise me if it takes longer to get into a jet or any military aircraft but I've seen American fighter pilots that are Still in their 20s. There's no long enlistment required that not true not sure where you got that from; Commercial airlines in America have loads of ex military guys and gals in their 30s the same with many countries. You can't fly combat in fighters after about 40

Along with that I'm just referring the the general rule if someone is a fighter pilot then there enlistment is for 10 years minimum. A friend’s son is a retired F-14 pilot he now flights 737’s for Southwest. The 1st time he had a FAA check flight ride along was a night flight from Phoenix to Seattle. Sea-Tac was socked in and was at minimum visibility at best . He had zero visibility on finial approach at about 1550 feet he said he caught sight of the lights and called it. At 1500’ he would have had to wave off. When they got on the ground the FAA guy told him that ex-Navy pilots are scary, no emotion and ice in their veins. He never told the guy how nervous he was having him looking over his shoulder. lol He said that was a piece of cake compared to hitting the deck of a carrier at night in bad weather.

As long as he's go with fuel onboard, airspeed, flaps, gear, and hook, all he has to do is guide it and adjust throttle. It is quick, but a few seconds can last a long time. You are steering, letting off the gas, and applying the brakes quite quickly with minor and gradual adjustments which you have practiced sufficiently to stop the car smoothly behind the line. They do come in fast but the film speed has been increased somewhat in this presentation, check out Jet bombers go to sea, landing an A-3D skywarrior landing on the Essex Class carriers, then X out an A3 that loss the nose wheel upon landing, then X out film that allows you to be inside the aircraft, the film is titled ride along in the A3D skywarrior!
