Most Kenyans think of Fort Jesus as an attraction. It was actually a place of grieving and sadness to enslaved Africans. Even after the abolition of the evil trade the fort was used to 'smuggle' slaves outta Africa.

The Portuguese slave trade was began by Pope Nicolas V and recorded in his Romanus pontifex, papal bull of Portugal, 8 January 1455, courtesy of the Arqivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, Lisbon, Portugal. This papal bull, through the Vatican, legally granted Portugal the right to enslave any and all Afrikans they encounter south of Cape Bojador, on the coast of Western Sahara.

Hello Phil great to see you at Fort Jesus there is a lot of history on slavery at the coast which is not fully documented and memorialized by the local communities and Government. There are locations like Mambrui , Kengeleni , Freetown and Shimoni that should have markers and powerful memorials where descendants of enslaved can come back and do pilgrimage just like you are doing. Most of the ivory that was stolen from Central Africa Congo , Angola and Eastern Africa was sold to 2 large companies in Connecticut cities of ivoryton and Essex. These ivory was used to make pianos. Dr. David Livingston a missionary who interacted with the slave traders estimated that for every ivory it took about 5 slaves to carry and 4 more died on the way from hinterland to the slave ships. From ship records over 100 000 elephants were killed and estimated 2 million slaves who went to the America's, Middle East , North America. There is need to do more research and preserve the historical assets using markers for purposes of repairing past injustices. I am still researching on this subject. If you want to know more you can reach me on pkegode@gmail.com
