    The first time I seen Billy Thorpe and the Aztec’s when they were the support band to Elton John at the Kooyong Tennis stadium in Melbourne in 1971. There’s absolutely no question billy absolutely stole the show. I’m so glad that I seen him many times especially the Sunbury concert. Today I sit here and think how fortunate I was to live thru that time that is now lost never to return.

    Thanks for posting. This is the best version I have heard. But definitely not the Melbourne Town Hall version. At Melbourne Town Hall Warren Morgan was playing the Town Hall organ (with all stops out) and as others have pointed out, they had a giant inflatable thing on stage, Billy's hair was plaited and he was wearing a vest and a part of the sound cut out. This version featured Bruce Howard and the reference to Sunbury would date it post Jan/ Feb 72. It is a lengthier and looser version than the Sunbury version and the other tighter version in the more well known GTK clip from late 71.

      Correct. Melbourne had the large inflated Platic bags and I will never forget Warren Morgan on the town hall organ.

      And to think a lot of commentators want the ABC closed down.

    I'm on page# 284 of 'Jimmy Barnes Working Class Boy' (Chrissie prezzie from Santa - my wife 2016) and I'll write it straight from the page; "Now, the reason I wanted to go (to the Sunbury Rock Festival 1972) was to see Billy Thorpe. He was my hero. He played louder and faster than anyone else in the country". I guess that's pretty high praise from Barnesy. If you want more I'm afraid you are going to have to get it out at your local library. You won't be disappointed.

    This was not the Melbourne Town Hall Concert. Check that out and you will see Thorpie in a vest with his hair in plaits. This was the ABC Studios Pacific Highway Gore Hill Sydney. I know because I was there in the audience, The Aztecs were late that day and the ABC had Carson play on the front lawn to keep the crowd from going troppo in the interim.

      +Byron Sigrano also would have been later than 71 because of the Sunbury reference

    Don’t think the year could have been 1971, he refers to Sunbury which was 1972

    Great video but definitely not the Melb Town Hall Concert as there was no tiered seating on the ground floor level, at least in 1971. Also they had huge inflatable "arms" writhing around the stage at the Town Hall Concert - I was there and remember it well, especially the unbelievable power of that unstopped Town Hall Organ.

    • @sue42r
      @sue42r 7 років тому +2

      I was there too Chris. I remember those inflatables well. Would I also be right in saying that was the day the trains were on strike? I remember having trouble getting to something at the town hall and a radio station was trying to get enough people together for a coach there. I was only 14, wanted sooo much to go to Sunbury the following year but I couldn't :( Did buy the album with the pop up tent though.
