Blitz is a firelighter brand, but everyone knows Blitz refers to any firelighter. The foil on almost every brand of firelighter is flammable and will light up the firelighter block quickly.
The green you saw on the meat is part of a food safe quality stamp on the outside skin. Home made braai bread is the best, I do mine in a cast iron pot in a Weber kettle braai. Onion is used mainly to clean the grid and gives a nice flavour, you can peel and cut onion and wrap in foil with some olive oil and put in the coals.
The sausage is called boerewors ('Boer' in Afrikaans is a Farmer or Afrikaans speaking person. 'Wors' is sausage)
When you go to a braai the host might say ' bring your Dop en Tjop' (Afrikaans Dop is Booze and Tjop is a chop, but refers to what ever meat you want to eat), sometimes the host will say they will provide the meat, in all cases it is good manners to offer to bring a salad, and you just bring chips regardless.
The Braaier (person doing the braai) holds top priority at the braai, they are the only person to hold the tongs and braai the meat, you can request how you would like it prepared, but braaing and spicing is up to the braaier. Touch their braai tongs at your own peril. It is the unspoken task of all braai observers to ensure that the braaier ALWAYS has a drink in hand. Braai is like a religion to most south africans!!!
As for vegans, they can bring their own food and prepare it and may not comment about meat whatsoever at a braai, or they will find themselves without an invite next time around.
As a joke, most serious braaiers will refer to fish at a braai as being vegan food, chicken and pork are vegetables and only red meat (beef, lamb, venison) is actual meat 😂😂

the braai master doesn't always spice the meat, in most cultures it's the women who preps everything from the meat to the salad even the washing up of the dishes is the woman's job in some cases it would be the man's job - Yes i'm a braai master too, you get taught how at a young age :)

There is an easier way to start a braai. She wanted to braai quickly. We usually do it with wood and chill by the fire. Take a shovel and have a braai place where we put the charcoal from the burnt wood. But different cultures in SA so we all do it differently. Some people use corn stalk dipped in paraffin. But the end result is always some nice braai meat!

Let me give you a chakalaka recipe:
    Grated carrots 3
    Baked beans
Green chillies ( as much as you can handle)
    Onion (1)
Bell peppers (all colors 1 each )
    Grated garlic 1 (Preferably)
    Grated ginger 3 cloves (preferably)
    Your favourite spice
    Oil of choice ( 1/4 cup )
Method: in a pot or pan add oil, when it's hot add chopped onion and peppers. When soft and golden add garlic and ginger. Within half a sec add carrots, salt, spices, green chillies and let it cook for 10 min and keep stirring every minute on medium heat. Then add baked beans. Reduce heat to low medium heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Then, ready to serve.
P.S You can also add gherkins and chutney if that's how you roll. When it's cold you can also try add tangy mayonnaise and see if you will like that combo.

It is machined ( filling machine) into a beef casing which is made from the large intestine from a cow if it is thick and a large intestine from a lamb if it is thin. It tastes the best when you use wood to braai, we even put the wors straight into the coals and that also changes the flavour!!! That is lamb leg chops she is braaing!

It's perfectly safe to eat. It's actually just a vegetable-based dye, commonly made from color-rich roots or berries, and fully edible.
So, the next time you find a green or blue speck on your farm-fresh meat, don't toss it out. You're just seeing the evidence that the meat was inspected, and passed.

meat is expensive booze is expensive.
"dop en tjop" Afrikaans slang meaning Booze and lamb chop.
booze These can be everything from "Castle" South Africa's favourite beer to "Klippies and Coke" -Brandy and coke or rum and coke.
Unlike American barbecue, a "Braai" is normally an afternoon or evening meal where the men gather around the fire pits to do the important things like drink and cook meat and the women do the unimportant things such as - breads, salads, veggies, desserts,"mielie pap" - a stiff porridge of cornmeal,, and tomato and onion sauce - a sauce that is never made in sufficient quantities.
I hope that any social justice warriors who read this can realise that the sexism was intentional and intended as humorous.

The meat you asked about is Boerewors, very tasty, personally the best sausage you can eat. the sandwhiches you put on the braai are usually cheese, tomato, onion with pepper called braai brootjie or we braai garlic bread. as for what a guest brings, it can be potato salad, normal salad, spice noodles, wine/beer or snacks.

In South Africa, we cook at home instead of going to restaurants or getting takeaways most of the time.
We learn to bake bread and cook from an early age.
If you're invited, it is customary to offer to bring a salad, bread or snacks, as well as booze that you like to drink.
Bring and braai is when you're invited to someone's place and you bring your own meat and booze, while host supplies the salads, snacks and other side dishes, and some non-alcoholic drinks. Or you bring your booze to add to the pile you all are going to share.
A celebratory braai has more varied food and drinks, and the hosts supply everything, but it is still good manners to offer to bring something along with the gift for whatever is being celebrated.
There will be cases of 750ml beers. We call them quartz and the brand is normally Castle and Black Label. In the "Coloured" (mixed race) communities we have a designated person who pours and watches the liquor, usually someone who is honest, can handle their liquor and doesn't take shit because next thing you know, someone walked away with some of your best booze. 🤣
Some people's wedding receptions are braais.
