It seems to me that Massenet's dramatic genius permeates his "light" suites (of which I particularly like this one). The music might remind us of an orchestral storm, a passionate love song, a balletic sequence, a triumphant finale, or many other situations. The issue is not really "portraying local colour" but bringing the kind of music that lights up a stage work into the concert hall.

Heavens above! This is absolutely magnificent! I don't know how Massenet managed to be so prolific while at the same time sustaining such a high quality. Three marvellous pieces, "La Danse" and "La Fete" being real showstoppers. The two discs of Massenet suites recorded by the NZSO and Ossonce are outstanding.....
