  • Learn the Shim Sham.
We all know how frustrating it is to be a beginner swing dancer, get to an event and at some point in the evening see all the other dancers gather in the middle of the dance floor and start this line dance that everybody seems to know but you... We've all been there!
That's why we've decided to teach the Shim Sham here online!
This first video is the whole routine danced to the music. We'll be recording and uploading very soon individual instructional videos for each of the moves of the Shim Sham. So make sure to register to our rss feed if you dont want to miss them ;)
The song the Shim Sham is usually danced to is "Tain't what you do" by Jimmie Lunceford, we've decided to dance it here to Billy Kyle's version because we really like it :)
For the individual instructional videos, comments and feedback, go to BuildingTheCommunity.PatrickAn....

Thank You afor teaaching me the Shim Sham in 7 parts. It was the easist to follow and learn and I think the routine is the same as I will see tonight at my dance. At least in the line damce you don't need a partner. I am in Pottstown Pa and just started taking swing lwssons so all I know are the basics taught in a 10 class session but I took the excelerated one in 5. Thank you again you do not know how much I wanted to learn this routine. It took me 3 nights but a total of 13 hours to get it to where I could follow along and MAYBE not mess up Lainie

@FilmsbyChris Hey Chris, Thanks for the comment. Yes, all the Shim Sham steps are the same. The most common songs are Tain't What You Do by Jimmie Lunceford or Billy May and Tuxedo Junction by Erskine Hawkins. The Shim Sham Song is a more recent song written by Bill Elliott during the Swing revival specificaly to be played in place of the other songs. The only change in the steps that you'll notice depending on the song is the presence or not of a bridge after the end of the first part.

    Hi Nikita,
The name of the song is Tain't what you do.
The version we're using is Billy Kyle's one, but it's usually Jimmie Lunceford version that's used in the Swing dance community. Other songs often used for the shim sham are Tuxedo Junction and Opus one.
    Good luck with your assignment.

Great clips, although my club Swing Dance Vegas does it slightly different. But I am a beginner, so it is hard to match your footwork and LRL changes from the front. I had to use a hand-held mirror in a failed attempt to keep my R&L aligned with yours. Will you please expand the vids to include the steps viewed from the rear? Also add on to the end of each vid all of the steps (from front and back) learned up to that point accompanied by music. Thanks for the teaching and encouragement!

Must say though on the pause steps, I think you count to 8, but on the 8th you begin the next step? That is the count of the pause? Was trying to get that right.

Hey John, the last move that we do on the video is called a suzy Q. It's not part of the routine, we were just improvising at that point and didn't think that someone would actually study this part of the video... apparently we were wrong :)

    Salut,
