A US Air Force retiree from Nashville, Michigan has dreamt of converting an airplane into an RV since he was eight years old. And now, Gino Lucci has successfully converted the derelict fuselage of a 1943 'Douglas R4D' aircraft into a fully functioning motorhome he's named 'The Fabulous Flamingo'. It was originally flown by the Navy in South America, and had been on the ground for over 30 years when Gino's son found it in poor conditions. Gino and his sons took three months just to fuse the plane with the chassis of an old delivery truck he owned. Gino told Ridiculous Rides: "The process we used to merge the two was very hillbilly scientific - it was exciting the challenge of it, every day it was just fun." It took a whole year to get the vehicle road-worthy and another two years to fine tune the detail - costing Gino $20,000 in total.

You do know if they put a tail in that or the trailer,it will most likely trying to fly because of the aerodynamic design if the plane,even if it doesn't fly(which is obvious),the tyre will lose some grip

I don't think I've ever seen anyone take a plane and fuse it with a truck, this just gives me major hot rod vibes

I worked Boeing's fro 25 years in the USAF- Since Boeing acquired Douglas- It is technically a Boeing now ! This is how I could justify the build LOL

The cars are great and you do great work, but in todays world I’m just as impressed with a young guy working with his hands on tools next to his dad, and learning from your dad.
Saw this today at Wally's! So unique! And I know the plane you used... I took pictures of it years ago at the airstrip outside Rolla! Very cool!

This is so cool. It took me a second to see where the cockpit with respect to the driver's place/engine. LOL. The base isn't a truck & trailer anymore it's an airplane with wheels.
Congratulations on realizing your childhood dream. I think that doing this all in 3 years with getting all the bugs out - nose to bumper - is a really good job.

Wow! What an incredible vision to see coming down the road, like the Space Shuttle! Its huge. Something you see in your dreams then make it a reality. Very impressive!!!! The work in integrating plane electronics with a truck engine is simply mind boggling. The inside looks Airstream retro. Airstream made a van look like a plane, and you made a plane look like an Airstream van! An absolute jewel of a unique RV! Bravo!!
Unfortunately, Barcroft showed us very little inside. I'd love to see where the tanks are, AC setup, bathrooms, etc.

As alot of folk will take initiatives as such being that they are living to be recognized and praised by others. So in return they will believe that others around them are seeking recognition and praise from them👀. LOL That would be great! I have my letter from when they turned down my application in 1988 I guess they needed more B52 Tail Gunners than engineers back then - LOL Thank you for the kind words!
If you wanted a trailer, you would have to source another mothballed plane, and mount it on a trailer chassis. Humorous note. Park at a KOA campground next to an airport, and back it up against a building.

I just wish they had used the tail in the project, instead of cutting the back half, they could have removed the middle, it would have been a lot more work as it would have to be spliced, but I think the result would be much better.

I totally agree, but I wonder if having the tail would have affected the driving Dynamics? Also, it's already very tall, the tail probably would have prevented it from going under a lot of bridges, overpasses, gas stations, xcetera. I still think it would look way better with the tail though.
@@StewartLucrative It's actually a valid concern, but even if they had removed the stabilizers, it would still look much better than a straight cut.
Adding the tail wing might make the vehicle illegal to operate. Could be a length issue.
Well Ill tell ya. -The short answer is .We looked at that in the very beginning .. It would have looked neat from the out side but the functionality and durability of the project would have been useless. To explain how we conculded that would take a tremendous amount of time and it just not worth it. But thanks for looking.
What a wonderful project. I'd love to see it at the EAA fly-in some year at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Bassler Air, there on the field in Oshkosh, used to re-power them with turbo prop engines . . . don't know if they still do it. Love to see you on the road some day.
It's actually does come every year I think or there's one that looks a lot like it in the fly market, they're usually vending there

Hi i live in england and i love it mate what a fantastic idea what a great way to use the space and you have done a great job of inside and out.i bet its such fun camping out in it and i bet when you are on the road everyone looks at you this is so fantastic 100% for the build quality and idea thank you for sharing it with us.

Looks like someone made a Roach Coach shuttle . I heard they had 1million plus in it. Unfortunately they dont have an interior. Perfect example of making it look cool but killing usability.

I've seen this ride in person. It's fantastic and the owning family is wonderful. It's been added to, at least they put overhead bins in the kitchen area. Maybe more but I'd have to look at my photos.

First of all the F-4 Phantom has always been my favorite military plane. They used to say that the F-4 was proof that if you put a big enough engine on a barn door it would fly. Second .... dam that is the coolest thing I have ever seen.
The plane was a Douglas R4D transport, not the F-4 Phantom.

You should have mounted it on a tandem chassis for the ultimate cool effect. Chrome rims all around on a tandem.
Originally this was intended to be a cheap father son project. Pretty much everything we used we had on hand. Not sure I would go tandem, but I would do somethings different... if time and money were no limit.

I saw this in the wild today. I told the guy that he has the coolest rv in the world and congratulated him on the good job. He gave me this look like “this is the 700th time I have heard this today and I just want to fill up”
