About our guest:
An alumnus of National Defence Academy was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery in December 1967. A third generation Army Officer was genetically inclined to serve in the Armed Forces. As a young Captain, he fought the 1971 War in the Dera Baba Nanak, Western Theatre, where he was recommended for the award of Vir Chakra. Since then, he has seen active service in every rank of his career. While in service, he has gone through the paces of all important courses in the Army, the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington in a competitive vacancy in 1981, the Higher Command Course, War College Mhow in 1990, and National Defence College, New Delhi in 1998. An out-of-the-box thinker, he ideated a new concept for the Artillery Fire Power to force the enemy to submission in the Kargil Heights War. Globally acknowledged for articulating the dynamic concept, Captain Marcus P Acosta from Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California, in his research paper on High Altitude and the Kargil War, writes, "the Indian Army deployed over 300 guns at Kargil, and most of them came under the command of one of the army’s most innovative leaders, Brigadier Lakhwinder Singh. Singh earned the nickname 'Enraged Bull of Dras' for his technique of applying overwhelming firepower in support of infantry maneuver, which he compared to using a 'sledgehammer to shell a peanut.' As commander of 8 Mountain Division's Artillery Brigade at Dras, he played a pivotal role in the conflict’s most important battles.

17 JAT और पाकिस्तानी मोर्चे के बीच में सिर्फ एक पत्थर था 72 घँटे बाद बोफोर्स का फायर आया, सिर्फ 15 गज दुर पाकिस्तानी मोर्चे मे सेल गिरा और काम हो गया। इतना सटीक निशाना था कि उस सेल से 17 JAT के एक भी जवान को नुकशान नहीं हुआ। 👍General Lakhwinder साहब को 👍💪✅

Sir it was so nice to hear from my then Cdr, Gen Lakhwinder after 25 years. Sir I am Col Sanjaya Goswamy then Major from Lt Regt. Was privileged to be the anchor Op of Tololing, Pt 5140, Pt 4700 and Pt 4875 ( alongwith Brig then Col N A Subramanian YSM) ie for entire Ops of Drass and Mushkoh valley. Fired almost approx 1.5 to 2 lacs round for the whole Ops. Proud to have served under great leaders. Professionalism at the best. My regards to Gen Lakhwinder.

Yash , Gen Lakhwinder deserved a much better award and further promotion his efforts in the war will remain unparalleled a Brave officer He did a splendid job outstanding I openly say Kargil victory belongs if not more equally to Arty under his command . The Major Sandhu he mentioned is none other than yours truly Atamjeet singh sandhu 7CAV . 19 fire units more than two Brigades worth of Artillery with Grad and pinaca missile besides that 4 brigades plus of infantry and the lone Q staff officer of 8 Div in the war zone . It was the most satisfying tenure of duty to have fought the Kargil war and attained victory for the Nation.unsung or sung does not matter the most important factor for victory of 8 Div was the command of a cool headed balanced through professional GOC Gen Mohinder Puri The Gs ops staff and entire 8 Div Logistics units . Only one thing was in mind of every one jeet Na hai . Jeet gaye Jai Hind Bharat mata Ke Jai 🇮🇳.

Been waiting for long to hear from Maj Gen Lakhwinder Singh on his Artillery innovations in the Kargil war. What a legend of our armed forces Gen sahab is. Fascinating conversation with an amazing level of detail. I have seen a lot of interviews of kargil war heroes and one thing that amazes me is the kind of detail that they remember even after 25 years. Hata off to these Braves. At the time of war, I had heard of a “Sikh General who had replicated a technique from Maharaja Ranjit Singh time” and apparently used the Bofors as a “musket instead of lobbing shells”. Finally I get to hear from this extraordinary man. We had so many brave men who gave their everything for the victory. I am glad we had this very clever and experienced person who prevented more casualties.
I was 13 years old and i compiled all news paper cuttings in a journal. I felt very strongly about the war and our brave soldiers. Thanks for the internet to listen to the men who fought it on the ground.

Finally got the real picture of Kargil war from Gen Lakhwinder . I am surprised why Army has not considered artillary after air fire did not work in beginning. It sounds like our Generals came along this winning tactic because of our Artillery force efforts . They should have had this in mind as an army General in first place. Now I am wondering how we landed with Bofors with such an attitude in the Armed forces.

In Kargil war the battles are dominated and lead by young, dynamic, fearless and newly commisonned officers and also bofors like guns meanwhile senior leadership formations like some Battalions, Brigades, Divisions were lead by well experienced and war veterans who have also fought in 1971 war.

Just amazing. Besides reading books written by real life veterans of a war, it always gives the real feeling when you see and interact with that particular veteran who has fought at that War. As usual, it is always interesting to see your podcasts, learn about real life experiences of the exceptional command, organizational ability and battle preparedness of such military officers who hold the expereince of leading such intensive battles. Though I've read about the Kargil War at several contexts, but never knew anything in details about the role of our supporting combat arms like Artillery, but this interaction with Maj. Gen. Lakhwinder Singh has really been a big lesson to learn.
But, surely it will be my request, if anytime possible in the future, would like to see your interaction with the Air Force Veterans and learn about their Battle Experience and the Air Operational Tactics followed by the Indian Air Force during the Kargil War in 1999. The role of the Air Force was also equally strategic and critical as well. 🙏🏻😊

The Ghosts of Kargil is still present in the Indian Army. Artillery is not modernized with induction of new guns lacking pace with technology.
After seeing success of Pinaka MBRL in the Kargil conflict, IA did not ask DRDO to develop long range MBRLs.
Even after seeing its effectiveness in the Ukraine war IA and DRDO were slow to develop long range artillery.
Even IA were shocked with light tanks of PLA at Ladak.

Sir, why anti aircraft guns like L 70 & Zu 23 were not used during kirgil 1999?
*Moreover Bofors & MBRL were introduced very late in kargil ?
Pakistanis were useing stringers missiles, German & Belgium machine guns.
Hard to carry to those heavy guns up the mountains, pakis had months to prepare and setup their bunkers unlike us.

रेसयो तो 1:9 का भी हो सकता है और 1: 15 का भी हो सकता है क्योकि दुश्मन ऊपर बेठा है उसको हाइट का फायदा मिलता है उस एक के मुकाबले हमें कम से कम 9 या 15 तक जवान भेजने पड़ सकते है तभी अपन जीत पाएंगे लेकिन कारगिल जंग में हमारे जवानों ने इतना बड़ा और अदम्य साहस का परिचय दिया कि ऊपर होने के बावजूद पाकिस्तान के 1200 जवान मरे ओर हमारे 524 या उसके आसपास की संख्या में अपना सर्वोच्च बलिदान दिया।जबकि दुनिया या युद्ध के नियमानुसार हमारे 1200 के 9 या 15 गुना जवान शहीद होने चाहिए जबकि हमारे जवानों, अफसरों का युद्धकौशल ही था कि ऊपर होने के बावजूद एक तय मानक होने के बावजूद हमारी 500 ओर उससे कुछ सर्वोच्च बलिदान ओर उनके हम से दो गुने से भी ज्यादा ये तो उपटलफेर हो गया हमारे जवानों ने,अफसरों ने अपने युद्धकौशल ओर शौर्य से सूत्र या सिस्टम को ही बदल कर रख दिया ओर उसे एक शोध का विषय बना दिया कि ऐसे कैसे सम्भव हुआ।सम्भव होता है जंग में देश के लिए मर मिटने के जज्बे से ओर वो हमारी सेना का था।
