Just in case you are not aware... On March 17th, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy asked all Thru-Hikers to Postpone their hikes & for hikers already on the trail to get off. I made the decision to respect the ATC’s Wishes & respect the towns surrounding the trail on that day by getting off & ending my hike for now. I’m currently back in Arizona hoping we can all get back on the trail soon enough. Because I was only out there for a total of 8 Days, this series will be a short one. I hope you guys enjoy... Be Safe & Well out there! Hike On, Darwin
Question? I am 15 and thinking that after high school I am going to try to save the rest of the money I have to thru hike the entire trail but am wondering how to save up money to go and I only have 3 years.
Sorry to hear that your long planned trip was cut short. Some of the state parks here in Pennsylvania are still permitting socially distanced day hiking. Perhaps you could make a vlog about how to properly social distancing whilst in public areas in the meantime?
Sadly, I must admit it was a bit painful to watch this knowing we had to come home. I’ve wanted to hike this trail since I was 10 years old. Only 32 days in and it had already changed my life forever. I drank from the mountains, the air I breathed was healing my soul, and my wobbly knees were just learning to dance with my new best friend. I want it now more than ever. I’ve learned so much from those who’ve gone before me, including you. Hoping the world heals soon so we can hopefully salvage what’s left of 2020. Thanks for sharing your journey with the world. You’ve inspired so many.
Hey Wild. I had a different reaction. It wasn't painful for me. My wife has always wanted to hike the AT, but I've always been more interested in the JMT or PCT. Today, as I watched this, right in the middle of the video I texted her and simply said, "I've changed my mind. I want to hike the AT". Here's hoping it happens. Stay well.
Your nostalgic voice overs put a catch in my throat and a tear in my eye. Hearing stories of pivotal life moments are my favorite. . . or maybe its just the quarentine talking.
This is so beautiful Darwin. The sound of your footsteps, the scenery, the music and your story. When you said “I was reborn” I started crying. This is so good. 🙌 hats off to you 🤙
Darwin, you are the epitome of impartial and happy hiker trash. You give your ultimate in happy updates for people looking to get on trail and experience what is the magic which is what hiking can offer. Please continue giving all of us the motivation we need to continue to get out on the trail and hike our hike. I’ve followed your trip since 2015 and haven’t missed a video since. Thank you!
I have been depressed about not being able to be out hiking new trails like normal since everything started in March, it has been hard to watch my fav UA-cam friends too, and I recently started doing five mile hikes near my home, we are blessed with some nature trails that are open. I got to camp out in my car this last week for an unexpected road trip three states away for a family funeral... and I feel a sliver of happy peeking through the sadness right now. Watching this, even knowing you had to get off trail, helps me feel normal again. So thank you! Now I have a lot of videos to catch up on!
Springer looks just like it did in 2015. In 2006 it was sunny, cold, and dry. Thanks for the memories. Another great video! I did trail magic for the first time in 2019 with "Freebyrd" (2015) in Maine. Nobody expected it. It was great! Good to see Underdog (2019) just throwing some stuff together to help hikers. For those who live close to the AT and enjoy these videos, or those who could not complete their journey due to the COVID 19, Once this thing blows over, go out and throw a party for those who can resume their quest. Thanks! 👍
I'm stuck at home in South Africa...(Thnx COVID-19).. But I agree with you, his videos lifted my spirits too. It's a dream (to one day) be able to hike the triple crown.
It is no wonder you have so many subscribers. Your helpful vlogs on every aspect of hiking are awesome. Your discussion on why you got off trail because of the virus is the best I have heard. It is a must read. For those of us who for whatever reason cannot do one of these hikes your vlogs make us feel like we are right there hiking with you. There is no comparison between how much you are enjoying these hikes to how much joy you bring to our lives but believe me you bring us more joy than you could possibly realize. Thank You.
As a follow of yours for a great many moons, over a great many hikes, I love your calm, appreciative, flowy and open-hearted way of reliving this trail. It all feels especially bittersweet in view of knowing you (and slews of others) were forced to leave the trail for all those good and responsible reasons you cited in your other recent video. So at least we get a small but tasty morsel of what would have surely turned out to be an epic journey which, this time, was starting to taste more like an inner journey than ever before. Beautiful reflections. And I love how you showed the trail magic guy! Such loving energy! This is also what the trail is about.
This is one of the very few hiking videos about the AT on UA-cam ,that you can really hear the passion in the voice about hiking and his lifestyle. Great stuff
I almost cried. The nostalgia is real! You look so super happy here and it's so clear how you belong and the things you appreciate coming back. I'm so sorry you had to cut it short. But boy, I'm glad you got some time in! Really, truly, thank you so much for sharing your journey with us!
I grew up in WNC, the AT just a few miles from the house. Watching this, Darwin, reminded of the saying, "Hurts so good!" Thanks for feeding the nostalgia in me, from 1977. Man it brings back the memories, and some rain from the eyes. Welcome home, hurry back now yahear! Chief Stopnlooky....dont ask....
The AT is like an old soul mate that will never leave your mind and will mess with you through your whole life. Following your steps in mine from 1978, military surplus gear on the cheep with a true brother I will never have the honor of taking this hike again with semper fi staff sgt Mike Green. The voice over of your thoughts brought up a ghost of days gone by. Planning on a new adventure with my real soul mate Janet aka live wire and my rambunctious four legged child Casey in the next two years. Thanks for the inspiration Little John
Dude you look so stoked in this video, I can't imagine how bummed you must be to have been forced to leave.. When you do go back though, woo, that'll be a great series. Looking forward to it!
Seeing the person at 5:19 caused a flood of memories. I had the same orange pack with the styrofoam sleeping pad. Thank you for a beautiful video and hope to see you back out there when you can!
You've been so happy, awww, what tragedy that you had to leave the trail. You've captured your first days in such a beautiful way. The AT is just magical and I feel very sorry for you, that you had to leave your home so soon. Home - that's what hiking in general feels to me, that's where I belong. I miss my home desperately these days. Thanks for sharing those beautiful pictures and your thoughts. Hugs!
Having just finished my 2019 sobo thru hike (just over 2 months ago) I remember all of these spots so vividly, as it was very close to the end for me. It is so cool to me that the trail is just out there for anyone to experience. Watching this video made me cry for only the second time since I have been home. I have never missed anything like I miss the trail, all of its godforsaken climbs that I stumbled and cursed my way up, all of its rocks and roots that I could never seem to step over, and the beautiful night skies that I screamed at because guthook failed to load my maps... again. What I am trying to say is don't take your time out there for granted, once you are home you realize how truly magical the Appalachian Mountains are. I am forever grateful, and humbled, having hiked all 2,200 miles of this lumpy mountain range. Thank you Darwin, for easing the hell of "the real world". Keeping those 2020 hikers in mind, don't be discouraged, the mountains will call again, and you will get your chance :)
I just recently discovered your channel. I hiked GA to NY in 2016 before having to get off due to physical issues, but I learned so much and I've missed the trail every single day. I'm planning on trying again in 2022 with half the pack weight and double the finances. Your videos are so helpful and inspiring. I love the nostalgia and pure happiness you exhibit in these vids and I can only imagine what it will be like for me when I go back. I hope you get the chance to try again too!
Started crying watching this! I am so sorry that this awful pandemic put a stop on your hiking plans this summer. Glad you got a few miles in (more than the rest of us!), but thank you for being a leader for the community in stopping your thru hike
Perfect timing to post this now when quarantine is into week three and getting depressing. Nice reminder of the amazing world still out there and still to come. Thanks Darwin!
What a great video. Your talent in making quality material really shines in both this and the AZT video you made. You can feel how happy you are in the cold rain to be back on the AT and it’s infectious. Just what I needed on the Friday afternoon stuck inside. Thanks brother!
This video is everything I needed right now, Neel gap was where my friend and I stop on our small section hike from woody gap to Neel gap. Same weather, loved every second of it.
Love the new style of filming and commentary. Reminds me so much of the first time I hiked in the Smokies and did a small section of the AT. We were very unprepared for the weather (trash bags for rain coats) but it gave me a love for the trail that still gets me excited today. Love what your doing, hopefully you can get back out there soon. Stay safe :)
Bravo for a great theme of then and now! I needed a little calm worldly perspective after a lot of the anger that is out there. Even though you decided to follow the right path and leave the trail, you did it well and I commend you for that! The pure joy on your face on a rainy, nasty first day is evident! That’s what I come to your channel for - Thanks Darwin!
Welcome back to the swamp stranger! I'm really glad to see some high quality footage from the AT. I have followed dozens of AT hikers since 2015 and only a few filmed it well. Kudos! I'm sorry to hear you got off after a week and am hoping you can get back to it when the all-clear whistle blows. It was nice seeing Underdog On the Appalachian Trail again. I almost did not recognize him w/ his beard shaved! Other than 2 overnighters late Nov., I have not been backpacking since the first week of Sept. I was saving my vacation time to start again late April, but will most likely have to postpone until the ATC blows the all-clear whistle. Watching your videos helps me and countless other Hikers better cope w/ cabin fever. P.S. Those slow rotation shots look like you have a motorized mount. Nice work!
From the very first shots of this video, I felt a desire to hike the AT that I haven't felt before. I can feel the love coming through my computer screen. I really wish we had a series on the entire trail to look forward to, but sometimes you gotta embrace the suck.
This is the first hiking video I've been able to bring myself to watch since the shelter in place order and my plans for the PCT this year have gone up in the air. Seeing you so happy to be out there then knowing you had to make the hard decision to leave trail brings me out of my own ego because I know that I'm not alone in this heartbreak I'm feeling. I hope we can all get back to hiking these beloved long trails soon. ❤
Oh what a great memory for me too Darwin. Bless you for this video. My heart breaks for you and the 1400 others who had to come off trail 2020. But this video, made my heart sing. Indy Girl
Oh holy cow! this would have been an epic series. The nostalgia and reflection already has me hooked, and I know HOW IT ENDS. Please do this next year!
I think was so far the best video I’ve ever watched of yours. Felt very sincere and touching and surreal. I hope someday before I retire I can attempt the AT. Much love Darwin.
So cool seeing you hike in the places I've hiked, it's some of my favorite footage. Met an awesome stoner up on blood mountain. Good memories up there. He introduced me to Rebolution. Cracked me up.
I hate it that you had to get off. I am glad you got to enjoy the time that you were on trail. Hopefully you stay safe in these crazy times and will be able to do some of your hikes that you have planned for later in the year.
Enjoying this video.....I think it is one of the best you have ever down!......remembering is always nice....you seem to really be enjoying the trail versus just putting the miles down.
hey darwin, im a trail worker who has worked on some of the places that you showed in the first few shots in the video. the at gave me a passion for the outdoors that has driven me to do things i never would have thought possible as a kid, glad you got to see some of the tread ive helped maintain. keep hiking ,am
Such a beautiful movie. Incredibly sad the this & trails the world over are closed. I hope this helps us appreciate how lucky we are to roam this planet & to share these special places with nature & wonderful people. Take care
Man I can’t wait. I originally planned on doing the AT this year, but due to other plans I had to put it on hold till 2022. I’ve done 1 long distance backpacking trip and other multi day trips and truly cannot wait. I know on my “short” 30 day trip I felt like it changed me, I cannot wait for the challenge of the AT and to do some soul searching. Love your videos!
Darwin, WOW! This video format/style is absolutely stunning! Amazing work. You've yet again inspired me to push harder towards my dream of hiking the AT. I hope that one day I may, even if just a bit, come close to documenting my journey in a way you have presented it here. Truly inspirational stuff here man. Thank you for what you do!
I don't want this to be a short series! I'm already loving it. Man, I can't wait until we all get out there. And I hope you can still so some series this year cos it's been way too long! Take care, Darwin!
I like all of Darwin's videos, but I really love the ones of him out on the trail. He really knows how to put you out on the trail with him. I'm sorry this one can't be a true thru hike, I look forward hopefully to the next series in the near future.
You are very different in these videos, from ones I have seen in the past. You seem to be more at peace. Cheers to you! Thank you for sharing your trail journey.
I just got so emotional when you said "feels good to be home" man. I felt that so much! I haven't hike the AT but I am plan to in a few years. I hike alot already but I dream of the AT.
Darwin, I really enjoyed that. I hiked this section last October and this video brought back some really good memories. Georgia was going through a severe drought at the time and reliable water sources were few and far between... which made things a bit difficult and necessitated a lot of extra planning and a lot of relying on intelligence from southbounders. That said, it was a great hike. I met some great guys and we are all still in touch. Unfortunately, like so many others, I just had to cancel a hike in the Roan Mountain area I had been planning on for this week. Like you, and everyone else, I’m looking forward to things getting back to normal. Sorry this trip didn’t turn out as you planned. Thanks for your videos.
HI thanks for the video, i know you are off the trail but try keep them coming. we are on day 7 of a 21 day lock down in cape town south Africa. So any view of the out doors is welcome. Thanks.
Hey Darwin. It was great to meet you in trail for the short minute. I'm there hiker that was hiking with The 89 year old hiker Pappy. We are sheltered in place in Virginia and waiting till they reopen the trail. Hope we get to meet again you are a true inspiration brother.
So cool man! Sorry to see you had to cut your trip short. Crazy times were in though! So cool to see people still giving in these hard times its great! You will be back out in no time im sure! Stay safe man! Hike on!!
Rewatching this mini series as I also watch other people on UA-cam prepare for their first AT attempt. Why am I sobbing 😂 I hope to experience this some day!
Stumbled across your UA-cam channel and it's quickly becoming my favorite. I've only hike one section of the AT and this video definitely stirred up memories for me. My section was from Springer Mtn. to Woody Gap. It rained so much and Horse Gap and Sassafras Mtn. kicked my ass. Thanks for all of your great content and thanks for re-igniting my desire to get back on the trail.
This is a cool look and look back. Much more laid back and introspective. If I may be so bold, it lacks the "cheesy" stuff we've come to know and love but I like this. Thanks.
This video made my heart hurt-I was forced off trail a week and a half ago, and seeing this scenery again, along with members of the tramily I made, really pains me but I will get back out there and finish the trail!
Thanks a million for making this series, Darwin. I had planned to officially start sectioning my way to Katahdin this summer, going from Springer to NOC. Like many in our community, I'm waiting to see what the summer will hold in terms of trips. Your video is a great reminder of what awaits, even if it means waiting another year. ~Beagle~
Such bittersweet watching this video. Today would have the day I flew out for my 50 mile/for my 50th birthday hike on the A.T. Of course I canceled it for this year. Thanks for the video, you really do an amazing job the way you film, narrate and edit. Thank you, and now to finish the video while camping in my hammock in my backyard ;)
Thanks for bringing me back to 2016 when I set out. Weird to think how something so simple can mold our lives so strongly! Also funny looking back, seeing you crush a 20 on day 2 while I pushed a "tough" 8 to Neels
My wife and I hiked a small portion of the AT on our honeymoon in early December 2018, we started right there! WOOT! It was 33degrees and raining. Happy Trails!!
Excited to see your first video on the AT. What first caught my eye is your amazing camera work and how you edit it together to form your story, great! Love hearing you reminisce and compare your 2015 hike. Your words are very moving and spoken like a poet. I know you had to cut this hike short, because of the virus, but looking forward to more of your story. Hiker Steve.
Dude the AT goes right through my town and I hike and run it pretty frequently. I'm glad I discovered your channel and perhaps fate will cross our paths when you resume your journey down the road!
I have watched your videos from your first AT hike on. This is bringing back memories and making me a bit nostalgic. :) I can't wait until you are able to get back out there again, young man! My thoughts are with you, and hoping this whole thing levels out quickly so you can all get back out there. Selfishly, I want more videos! I'm running out of AT vids to watch! :) Best to you and yours!
When you said back at the same spot on the same date as 5 years ago, the day that changed my life forever, that rally hit me. I left my snowmobile house in Maine to go back to work in lower New York March first and everything just flipped instantly. Makes you think about experiences, places people and things. I was mad I only did one night in my hot tent, now I’m lucky I did hot tent at all. Be safe and I hope to continue watching this change in your life as I continue mine. 😊❤️🇺🇸☃️❄️🛷⛺️
I loved this!!! While I have no desire to hike from Springier to Katahdin, I love the AT and the sections I have hiked (basically GA/NC line to Damascus but only part of the Smokeys) and I love meeting the folks who are hiking it anytime I'm on it - Frozen introduced me to a thru hike and I totally loved Wild, Taylor and Frosty this year and was soooo looking forward to Darwin - we will all be back out there in time doing what we love and I'm looking forward to heading north from Damascus with day hikes as I can and maybe doing some of the GA sections as well. When not hiking I love to do trail magic and meeting the folks who come by - COVID-19 has brought a stop to all of that - hope it's gone sooner rather than later :)
This is a scary time, in a strange way, your video took me away, it gave me some relief, it put me out there. I think this series is very important, right now. Hike on Brothers and Sisters.
Really nice to see you starting the AT again! Such great vibes and memories it must have been for you to be out there! Too bad you had to stop but great watching for us all stuck at home.
Thanks for filming this. Memories of my 2011 attempted Thru hike came flooding back. I won't share it all but ... Until the CV showed up I had been gearing up for finishing what I had begun. Now at 61 y.o. so much is changing, I am building an Art Studio/tiny home on my property in AZ. With extremes in weather, I need to be able to be safe when here. Over the years many dreams have died - I'm unclear how I feel about getting the opportunity to finish the AT or not. AND I am reminded of how strong I am - I was so new in 2011, I didn't know why the canopies and people laughing were along the trail, I was never invited nor noticed so I never said hi...darn that was trail magic! ( My hike was rather lonely - I imagine that it would not be lonely again 😉.
Take solace in doing the right thing to leave the trail. So many years planning. I was subbed but seems I'm not any more. It's probably two years this July I started watching your videos as your advice helped me with my own thru hike in Europe September time.
With your skill and persona and abilities both as an artist and as a hiker it would be incredible to see you put out an end to ender video thru-hiking the AT as you did on the PCT. Even tho youve hiked the entire AT it was before you became who and what you are now and, indeed, treated you, so to speak. All of your followers, I have NO doubt, would love to see you complete an entire thruhike of the AT in one go while recording it as you go along. Ive hiked many, many trails thruout the US but I truly believe that the AT is the king of Trails. The PCT may be 25% longer but its 50% easier to finish because of the way its made. I personally know 2 folks who competed the PCT but quit the AT. Both said it was just too much work and not enuff reward. To me, the reward is in my determination to finish what I start. Anyway...maybe someday?!?
Just in case you are not aware... On March 17th, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy asked all Thru-Hikers to Postpone their hikes & for hikers already on the trail to get off. Question?
I am 15 and thinking that after high school I am going to try to save the rest of the money I have to thru hike the entire trail but am wondering how to save up money to go and I only have 3 years.
I was supposed to be on a train for Georgia tomorrow... Switching to Team SOBO hopefully for June!
Bravo. Bravo for you. Bravo for others. Bravo as an exemplary decision for the greater community.
Well done for doing the right thing, even though I know it must have been really hard. You will be back and having a great adventure soon!

Started crying watching this! I am so sorry that this awful pandemic put a stop on your hiking plans this summer. Glad you got a few miles in (more than the rest of us!), but thank you for being a leader for the community in stopping your thru hike
What I always love about these videos. Is how Darwin is carrying his Ultralight gear and everybody else is carrying around Huge Massive packs.
😂 It comes with the Miles... 😉
Agreed. Also smart to re-supply early on to keep his weight minimal the first day. I can't tell you how much I have learned from this guy!
Perfect timing to post this now when quarantine is into week three and getting depressing. Nice reminder of the amazing world still out there and still to come. Thanks Darwin!
still in week 3 ;)
I saw a few hikers I hiked around before the trail closed! It was good to see them again, even if it's just from my couch now.
What a great video. Your talent in making quality material really shines in both this and the AZT video you made. You can feel how happy you are in the cold rain to be back on the AT and it’s infectious. Just what I needed on the Friday afternoon stuck inside. Thanks brother!
Thanks for posting Darwin! I did the first 300 miles of the AT last May and this brings back some awesome memories!
It was like stepping in a Time Machine for me!
I love the views, the fog, and the silence. Beautiful video!
This is balm for the soul, pure healing right now, thank you!
Been watching ur videos for years . You are doing your best work
Welcome back to the swamp stranger!
Underdog is an awesome dude with a great spirit. I followed him and his crew on UA-cam last year when they came through Virginia.
I got off trail too, but it’s so cool to say ’I know exactly where that is!’ Can’t wait for the others!
Oh what a great memory for me too Darwin. Bless you for this video. My heart breaks for you and the 1400 others who had to come off trail 2020. But this video, made my heart sing. Indy Girl
Wow! You got soaked starting out. A full house in those shelters, too.
Enjoyed the cinematography of this video. Keep it coming.
Oh holy cow! this would have been an epic series. The nostalgia and reflection already has me hooked, and I know HOW IT ENDS. Please do this next year!
Wow! Freedom... I remember those days. Thanks for sharing... this video really hit me in the heart.
I think was so far the best video I’ve ever watched of yours. Felt very sincere and touching and surreal. I hope someday before I retire I can attempt the AT. Much love Darwin.
Great stuff, man! Love the 2015 flashbacks. I for one have truly enjoyed watching your adventures over the last five years!!
So cool seeing you hike in the places I've hiked, it's some of my favorite footage. Met an awesome stoner up on blood mountain. Good memories up there. He introduced me to Rebolution. Cracked me up.
jeez man I didn't expect you to start that kind of series
format's perfect, not too long and well edited
loved it, already looking forward for more
Have you watched the Film I made last year? I decided to start making more "Film" type videos VS "Vlogs"
Glad you dig it! 🤙
hey darwin, im a trail worker who has worked on some of the places that you showed in the first few shots in the video. the at gave me a passion for the outdoors that has driven me to do things i never would have thought possible as a kid, glad you got to see some of the tread ive helped maintain. keep hiking ,am
Thanks Darwin! Two hikes for one, lots of stories and beautiful trail shots!
Dame Darwin, you tell a good story- Very inspirational
Thanks.
You still had eight great days with new and old memories!
Great presentations and personal perspectives relating to prior hikes
Thanks Bruce!
Was a pleasure meeting you...it was a blast serving everyone..
Hey Darwin. It was great to meet you in trail for the short minute. I'm there hiker that was hiking with The 89 year old hiker Pappy. We are sheltered in place in Virginia and waiting till they reopen the trail. Hope we get to meet again you are a true inspiration brother.
Hit me up on my Facebook group page Journey of the Phoenix. Would enjoy you sharing your journey on my group page
So cool man! Sorry to see you had to cut your trip short. Crazy times were in though! So cool to see people still giving in these hard times its great! You will be back out in no time im sure! Stay safe man! Hike on!!
What a treat to watch during my lunch break. Hike on Bro🥾
Thanks.
Super cool format with the looking back on 2015! Nostalgic 😎 nice to watch during this stay home situation.
I'm really digging your style these days. Looking forward to the rest of the series, even if it is short!
Dope as usual man! Inspiring me from the UK in lockdown! Hope this ends soon and you can get back on the trail. Bless bro!
~Beagle~
Thru hiking the AT is one on the bucket list....hope you had an awesome time!
Thank you for sharing this even though you didn't get to finish! It's apparent you love this trail I hope to hike it one day!
I also love hiking in the fog. It's so rad.
Bumped into Underdog in New York last year on our thru, great guy and funny too! Keep em coming and let the good times roll
This is a scary time, in a strange way, your video took me away, it gave me some relief, it put me out there. I think this series is very important, right now. Hike on Brothers and Sisters.
Really like the combination of vlogging and commentary here. Keep up the fantastic videos.
Glad you had the chance to meet Baltimore Jack before he passed away.
Beautiful, beautiful touching inspiring video...I got goosebumps when you said: damn it's good to be home... great filmmaker and great story teller 🙂
This is exactly what I needed right now. But,
More importantly, this is an AMAZING video. So well done!
Your enthusiasm is amazing. I'm sorry your trip was cut short.
Good luck on your journey.... looking forward to the videos ... hike your hike !
Really looking forward to the episodes resuming. Totally respect your decision to....respect the ATC's decision, tough times call for tough decisions.
Sad to see it cut short, but looking forward to future adventures :)
Hope we can all get back out there soon 😉
