    This isn't about "boys being nice to girls", or "girls being delicate flowers". This is about treating your fellow human beings like human beings.
    And, for the record, it's impossible for a woman to be treated "just like the other males there", when she is subjected to sexual harassment. Your argument fails.

      Loud dudes like Aris usually have some innuendo in one or two things they say for their clique to laugh at. Women roll with this stuff, or parry it to their advantage, but Aris just beat this chick over the head in that training clip. Nonstop insults and commenting on every move she made, even going to the bathroom. Asking details about her boyfriend when clearly Aris would have to fight him if he was present. Show me a clip of a dude getting that much nonstop attention, not even harassment like this.

    Men can take sexual harassment towards themselves with a grain of salt. It doesn't bother most men, but woman are very much bothered by it and is completely unacceptable to do. People do value themselves and this kind of behavior is unsettling.

      bensons999 I can speak against sexual harassment for both sex's. They are both wrong but men are rarely bothered by sexual harassment. Women take it much more seriously.

      ***** Utter bullshit. Sexual harassment happens to men much more commonly than to women and is thought of as a joke and something that men should just man up and accept it.

    • @relatively_random4903
      @relatively_random4903 10 років тому +3

      BlueCosmology I know it happens to men, that's why I said "most" men. But I'm not sure I would agree sexual harassment happens more commonly to men than women. Don't get me wrong, men get shit all the time for all kinds of unfair problems. I just think this is something most of us haven't *really* felt on our skin.
      Maybe it's just my lack of experience or something, but I really don't see a lot of stuff like shown in the video happening to men. Or groping in public transport. Or catcalling...

    I know what I've seen, and I know what I've read. Aris has made his views on harassment and the fighting community pretty clear. What else do I need to know to make an educated evaluation of this situation? I believe this girl was treated unfairly, and the attitude that TyrannosaurusJex displayed is part of the problem. Were YOU there, or know these people? Since it's got you so worked up, what can YOU tell me about it that I don't already know? I'm eager to know.

    When a girl says : "this is creepy" you passed the line an hour ago. that's the sign. Another sign: if she deosn't laugh anymore she is probably under heavy stress and wants to be in another place, without the person who is harrassing her. They gave a ton of message but the guy continued. I'm sorry that she left the competition because she seemed to be very competitive!

    There is audio of the harassment on UA-cam. The video is called "Day 1: Sexual Harassment on Cross Assault". I don't know why you'd need to 'know' the people involved, but you can certainly listen to what she had to deal with.

    A verbal warning would have not looked weak; she let herself look weak by not saying anything. She became a doormat. I would have asked Aris nicely to stop; if he continued, then I would have told him to shut up. If he would have persisted, the next step would have been for me to get up out of my chair (it was practice, not a match, so no big) and hit him. Live feed or not, don't look like a doormat. Tourneys will come and go, but honor should always come first. Flipside: 100% still Aris' fault.

  • @WillDaBeard

    Wow, even after all that, she's still trying to downplay the whole event, even though she's clearly hurting. I feel so bad for her, she's being way too nice, she couldn't have deserved what happened to her less.
    God I can see how this has gotten so many people mad, this is so wrong, she shouldn't even care if she's doing bad or not, this was suppose to be about fun. The only good thing that may come out of this is awareness.

    Aris was a prick and should have been kicked out of the tourney for explicit harassment and unsportsmanlike behavior. This shit is obscene. I really hope she comes to understand that this is the exception, not the rule. Coach or not, this guy majorly overstepped and I'm shocked nobody on the team called him the fuck out on it.

  • @TheMusesOrg
    @TheMusesOrg 12 років тому +1

    salmonblox may have listened to the audio and based his/her opinion on that. That was my point.
    I don't know if the harassment 'would' have gotten worse, but I do agree that victims should never be blamed and accusing someone of encouraging that sort of treatment by not speaking up is incredibly naive and ignorant.
    Oh and if you were there you would know that she couldn't just 'get out'. She was contractually obliged to remain there for there entirety of the tournament.

    For every girl out there crying about how mean the fgc is, timeout. This was an extreme case of over the line harassment. particularly when aris started pointing the camera at her body. However, there are plenty of girls in this community who take the shit talking because they can dish it right back and form friendships or interesting rivalries. Its mostly the 09ers, never hung at arcades, play online mostly crowd that you will see whining.

    I can't even understand how that's the behaviour of what is supposed to be a "coach" for this genre. And I thought we girls had to deal with enough crap in shooter competitions, lol.
    All my respect for the women competing in the arcade fight genre, seriously. I know this is not the rule, but it's not an exception either. Sometimes the reason nobody speaks up is because they are trying to focus on what they are doing, and hoping "that guy" will just shut up.

  • @Stballer2424

    I bet it wasn't the actually sexual harrassment that was getting to her. It's the fact that she sucked at the game and Aris was giving her a hard time about it. It was a competition and he was the coach, obviously he's going to be pissed if one of his players suck badly.
    Aris was joking around with the sexual comments and she knew it too. She was having a hard time on the show because Aris was giving her bad feedback about her performance. The sexual harrassment was just an excuse.

  • @padawanmage71
    @padawanmage71 12 років тому

    Well, who knows what the future holds? As more and more women play games and compete in competitions, maybe a balance will be found between how guys act and how women react, as well as vice versa. As to chivalry being over, well, I think the jury's still out on that. We both have our opinions, so let's just leave it at that.

  • @SoPoG
    @SoPoG 11 років тому +2

    while i agree on the whole women need to speak up-thing, i think you have to consider that you don't usually open your mouth after the first two mildly offensive words - maybe you dont want to look like a crybaby (perhaps especially as a woman to appear strong & stuff), maybe you think "ok he said some stupid stuff, let's just shrug it off" - but if the offender goes on and on it becomes harder to talk back
    but of course you're right - don't be an ass should be the golden rule, always

  • @salmonblox
    @salmonblox 12 років тому +2

    "The sexual harrassment was just an excuse"
    I think you need to take a minute and consider the absurdity of this statement.
    Bottom line: what Aris did was NOT OKAY. As you pointed out, he was the coach, a position of power, and he exploited that position to harass a fellow gamer simply because she was female. I'm no prude, and one of the last people to cry "sexism!", believe me, but this was wrong, plain and simple. I don't care his reasoning, I don't care if that's "the scene". He's a creep.

    There was no ad hominem fallacies in my entire post. There was one insult at the beginning which was 8 words long, in a 500 word comment. You should understand the words you use before you use them, otherwise you may embarrass yourself.
    I don't really understand how you don't see what happened as sexual harassment, and not simple bullying. There was obvious sexual talk.Sexual harassment or bullying is never OK and not defending one incident on the basis that you won't defend others is idiotic.

And honestly, there's nothing written that says the gaming community is solely for men, that's a cultural thing. And like everything else, it changes with time. This'll be the last I'll say about this, so good luck in your crusade.

    Really its probably not so much that she is a girl, some people cannot stand to lose at video games and just rage hardcore. When someone starts talkin shit in a videogame that means you are starting to worry them, so just focus and bring home the win. I don't understand why people think obvious threats from gamers are serious or how people care what your opponent says; anything that comes from his mouth is intended to throw off your game.
    If anything I think girls have an advantage in games because they are girls and when guys start to lose it effects our pride, and it makes it harder to play frustrated. The only things guys have over girls is apparently that girls cant yet figure out how to take being insulted so they leave and cry or w.e rather than just ignore and beat the guy.
    The more angry someone gets the more you should just laugh at them, it makes an unending vicious cycle of rage if you maintain beating them.
    The commentary from gamers is VERY obscene and if you cannot handle it then perhaps you shouldn't have gone. A lot of people do not like the vulgarity that occurs but I personally think its hilarious and at times can be the funnest part of the game-with the right people.

    Not true for all girls. A girl who I dated for 2 years called the things I did creepy because she didn't want my ego to expand. You have to read between the lines sometimes when it comes to women. They're majorly passive aggressive which is why when dealing with men women must be truthful and direct. Saying "this is creepy" isn't going to cut it. Say "Knock it off dude I don't want to hear you talk to me like that anymore got it?"

    Aris did apologize on day 2 or so, so the sexual "harrassment" or coments were probally dumbed down a bit afterwards. I remember she said some thing like "it's like having your boss constantly degrading you", i think she said that on twitter, so Aris was giving her a hard time about the her performance(gaming wise). I still think i'm right about this.

    I really feel for her as you listen to her cracking in the voice as she speaks. Wow she was really bothered by their antics (the boys).
    One thing ALL girls need to understand though is that when you enter a field of men you need to be ready to kick ballz because to men they feel insecure that something feminine is de-legitimizing their work and so they get defensive. So the best medicine is to kick some azz and earn their respect. Does this mean you must work 10x harder than the average guy - ABSOLUTELY! But i think that is the only way to survive this testosterone filled, BO'ed room.

    I find no fault on Super_Yan. BUT... without saying something up front (after the first comment that rubbed her the wrong way) she did sort of open up the impression that she was okay with this treatment. This is also the reason why people are trying to put her at fault. Yes, the gaming community as a whole need to be better, but that door swings both ways: call out things that are inappropriate as well as try hard to not be inappropriate yourself.

  • @salmonblox
    @salmonblox 12 років тому

    Well, I respect that you backed it up with sources, and while you may be right that the reason she's quitting isn't directly because of sexual harassment, it doesn't change the fact that
    a) That doesn't excuse the sexual harassment in any way, it was vile and insulting to her AND the viewers
    b) Aris constantly rode her primarily for being a girl, whether she "sucked" or not. (and that's still harassment!) This is way too common an occurrence in the gaming community, and seriously needs to stop

  • @SKSoloKun
    @SKSoloKun 7 років тому +3

    I am shocked people even still comment on this video or this moment in the FGC at all. I will say however that this one instance in time was one of the most ridiculous circumstances and was hardly something most would call harassment. I get it, she was very uncomfortable with the way that things were handled, and she believed Aris was pretty much stripping her security and peace of mind away by his actions. But to this day there were still a multitude of things that proved to me this was more of Miranda/Super_Yan's way out of the tournament without facing elimination than it was "harassment."
    In her Cross video she mentioned having a history of playing Soul Calibur competitively, or at least I recall it being mentioned somewhere she did. People can say "well every community of the FGC is different" but I personally believe if you have dabbled in one venue for the FGC then you pretty much know or hear from second-hand experience how the other sides are. I am not in the belief that Miranda was some innocent lamb lead to the slaughter being around Aris. And I don't honestly think she actually was so naive or new to the FGC in such a way that she felt she had no one to relate to or tell this was going on.
    The second thing that ticked off to me was that Sherry Jennix, a known and exposed thot in the FGC was also at this tournament and even told Miranda several times and tried to console her off to the side as exposed by L.I. Joe's stream that this stuff happens. The heckling, the picking fun, the rude comments (it even happens to male competitors and while it doesn't make it right, it does underline that it exists for both sexes) were all apart of it. Miranda could have asked Sherry to even say something was off. But there was footage of Miranda still coaxing the attention, still saying things to give the impression that it was "okay" to keep pestering her. People are not mind readers and some suck at social cues or knowing when others are uncomfortable. But it's pretty universal that if you are being chided back with, until you hear or get an evident "stop" you think that someone is in on it too.
    Lastly and finally it has been said on numerous streams before and after Miranda's incident that Miranda is known for causing drama and bopping around in the FGC. Let's be realistic. I don't think people just wake up and decide "Today I am going to sexually harass this person" and I highly doubt Miranda was just the decided flower here in this situation. But she's been known to cause drama between other players, she even got two long time friends to start hating each other simply because she dated the other. And has jumped between guys in the SC community like a fish on cobblestones. I am all for defending against sexual harassment, but given the nature of most girls in the FGC anyway? (Except for Japan's FGC) I don't ever just trust a case of "she was harassed omg!" coming from our side until I have enough evidence to say "Yes it was unwarranted and entirely unprovoked." I feel bad for her, but I honestly do think it was just for some attention and to not be the weak link on Team Tekken.

      nobody has to put up with this bullshit it doesn't matter how much it happens. you excuse the actions of some because they "suck at social cues" but miranda has an obligation to be completely direct and transparent with her actions no matter how much she might "suck" at doing that?
      i don't think anyone was intentionally making her uncomfortable, but they DID have a toxic lack of social awareness that needs to be addressed.
      we don't need a half-baked essay about how miranda wants attention, we just need to listen, handle the problem and keep gaming.
      it's not that hard.

      This was harassment plain and simple. What other sport allows a coach to comment on someone’s bra size, take a camera and zoom in on his player’s breasts, butt, and feet while making comments about them, talk about taking home the winner of a “mud wrestling competition”, and invade a player’s personal space and smell them after being asked to back up? Any other league that isnt the fgc would call out these actions for what they are: harassment.
      The rest of your room temperature IQ take is either irrelevant or poor excuses to justify harassment.
      Miranda’s previous experience in the FGC doesn’t justify being harassed during the competition.
      FGC having a reputation for heckling doesn’t justify the harassment.
      Sherry Jenix’s reputation is irrelevant to this situation.
      Miranda’s dating life is irrelevant to this situation.
      Miranda’s alleged “drama queen” reputation doesn’t justify harassment.
      Miranda’s alleged reputation regarding her sex life doesn’t justify harassment. (Holy shit, you unironically made the ‘she was asking for it” argument here LMAO).
      This is a pretty close and shut case, Aris was her coach. He said and did a lot of inappropriate things throughout a 5 day period, she didn’t asked or provoke any of it. Crazy how you had 5 years to examine this event and you still tried to downplay it.

    Wrong. She COULD have said something to combat the harassment, but it was not her responsibility to. You're really faulting HER for being harassed? What the hell is wrong with you? If she had spoken up, the harassment would have only increased. The fault lies solely with Aris and whoever else participated in tormenting this poor girl. There is zero excuse for such vile behavior, "competitive spirit" or otherwise. Gamers are better than this. We need to represent ourselves better.

      Snake PIissken even sherry jinx or JUST sherry jinx and maybe a few other people? I mean there is most of this comment section that seem to be on Super_Yan's side and the team at extra credits (who are a UA-cam channel dedicated to in depth analysis and advice on game design that have a large following and have proven time and time again to be extremely insightful). And also, who the hell is sherry jinx and why is sherry jinx's input important for this situation?

      @@timothyclark58 yeah, and false accusations are always believed at first, what's your point? The truth is not discern by how many people agree on the same mentality, but on the facts. This is not sexual harassment, is a bunch of grown up idiots that think they are funny by doing childish jokes.

      @@JesusProtects There are literally videos where you can see the harassment, this isn't a false accusation. Those 'jokes' are harassment, you're just downplaying them by calling them harmless jokes. This mindset and amount of tolerance for the harassment of OTHERS is what allows creeps to stay long enough to do worse. You shouldn't just let these things slide if you're going to be part of a community, especially if there are repeated offences
