- What happened to Sri Lanka's economy?? Due to a ruthless combo of corruption-induced debt, and pandemic-induced economic woes (no tourism in a country where it's a primary industry), the country is in debt to the tune of $51-billion!
Sri Lankan people are fed up, and their president has now fled the country due to the protests. But it's real rough for everyday people, with food and medicine hard to come by.
And of course, now the vultures are arriving, offering loans in exchange for certain... useful things...
Except India, who has actually given them a fair bit of help. Heck yeah, India.

Well help is never free and since sri lankan rupee is basically worthless the only way they could be sure to get their money back is if they we’re paid in control of property. China trapped Sri lanka in debt trap and INDIA is not taking any kind of control on Sri Lanka's resources. India provided different financial aids and soft loans to Sri lanka and send alot tons of Oil for the country to survive for free.

I don’t like China but in this one specific case it wasn’t a debt trap. A debt trap is when country A aproaches country B with too good to refuse offer to build something, project fails and country A takes control of something in Country B. In Sri Lanka’s case it was Sri Lanka who approached China with reguest for a loan, the project failed because it was destined to fail as there was big enough port and another was completelly useless. Please get your informations correct next time and don’t be just CoUNtRieS Don’T GivE FRee MonEY to CouNtRy in CrISis ThAt’S It’S OWn FauLT!

Rajapaksha the corrupt ex-PM of sri lanka first approached to Indian government to invest in and build Hambantota but Indian government briefed Sri Lankan government that this project won't succeed. It would be a waste of our money and your resources. But Sri lankan PM didn't understood it and went to China instead and China saw an opportunity to grab Sr Lanka's land and resources and China took it. Even though china itself knew that this project won't even earn the amount spent on it. China could simply refuse it and try to make Rajapaksha understand the drawbacks of this project but china wanted to trap sri lanka and capture it's resources and the end result is now in front of you. Same is happening with Pakistan. This is China's policy to trap weak countries and acquire their land.

The rules are actually to prevent Sri Lanka from going broke again the IMF doesn't really want to be a welfare organization..
Well the argument basically goes: If the IMF bail a country out, they don't want to keep bailing them out, as like you said some welfare organization. So to ensure that doesn't happen, the IMF imposes controls to get the economy in the "right direction."
Problem is, the countries that contribute to IMF are not neutral arbiters of international finance and has stakes. So they force rules and regulation that benefit them and them only. And even in the off chance no one wants to influence the IMF for certain policies; they are often out of touch with the reality of the situation.

The protests have died out by now but the corrupt politicians haven't (I don't think we can ever get rid of them). However inflation and malnutrition among children is skyrocketing. The "new" government's actions are just sufficient enough to prevent the country from collapsing again (hopefully).
