To my mother's considerable chagrin, I deserted my family's Thanksgiving in Michigan to drive to Chicago for Caballe's Violetta in 1970. Her "Amami, Alfredo" in Act 2 is to this day the single most electrifying moment I've ever had in any opera house. The same weekend included Marilyn Horne in L'Italiana in Algeri, and my orchestra seat for each was in the neighborhood of $10-12. The previous Thanksgiving's double bill was Don Giovanni with Tito Gobbi and Barbiere with Horne. Those were the days!

The aspect I miss too ; she was capable of it.Sadly,the reason this recording does not take pride of place alongside my two sets of ‘La Traviata” with the divine Dame Joan.
callastoujours ,Caballe makes some gorgeous sounds and it is an inspired recording but I’m just so comfortable with Sutherland and the way she always delivered the goods.However , I do understand where other singers and other listeners are coming from.
She passed away tonight. Rest in Peace Montserrat. Tell your friend Carlo Bergonzi he too is still in our memory.
