I think the worst thing I've smelled was the body odor of this obese elderly man who would often ride the bus at the same time I did (when I was in High School). I don't know what caused it, but he smelled bitingly acrid. I've never smelled anything like it anywhere but on a few overweight people. Have you by any chance encountered this? I am curious to know what could cause that particular smell. That was the worst smell, but the most interesting one I have experience with is dead horse smell :) Several years ago I spent three weeks volunteering at a wolf sanctuary in the mountains of Colorado (Mission:Wolf). Twice a week we would butcher donated horse carcasses to feed to the wolves. (All the horses were from local farmers and had to be put down due to age or injury, no healthy horses were ever killed) The dead horse smell would seep into our skin and we would all smell like dead horse for at least three days, even if we bathed. It was particularly strong around the cuticles of the fingers.

I saw that one of my mantids made a bit blue-green like poops and there was a grape like odor in the enclosure. But the mantid was acting healthy... :/

This is true. Diabetics have that ketone smell as do people (not ketones but other metabolites) withdrawing from opiates. Also, Chickenpox has a distinct sweetish smell that I became aware of as a child and since, have known when kids have it without being told or seeing the spots (I also had shingles at 18 so its pretty well engrained in my system lol).
The worst thing I've ever smelled came from the summer that I foolishly tried chewing tobacco. Thankfully it was an easy practice to quit that same summer, but I seem to have missed one of the cups I was using as a spitoon. It spent a couple months in a hot room before being discovered. It was pretty full but didn't smell like much of anything until I picked it up to dump it out. The smell was worse than the worst vomit, outhouse, skunk, untended garbage can, or carcass that I've ever encountered.
The smell that emanates from the skin of someone with a severe case of chickenpox is a sweet smell that stays is the sheets and matress forever... a smell I can't forget.

My uncle is a marine biologist and he used to take me on field trips, once a sea turtle wound up dead on a beach from wounds caused by a boat, it wasnt the most populated beach so no one picked it up or disposed of it, by the time someone called the ministry of ambient (thats what its called in venezuela) it had been there for around a week , you could smell the thing from a mile away, im not even kidding, apparently the fat that connects the shell with the skin smells super potently when it rots.

The times I've gotten caught in a rain shower and had to remain in wet cloths for a long while, my skin and cloths always would start producing a curious sweet disinfectant like smell. Very weird.
Hmm, I gave some real thought to the worst smell I've ever come across.... it's actually a hard question. There are different ways in which smells can be bad. But I think the worst smell ever in my life thus far is probably the scent emitted by stinkbugs (I think they're a "shield" bug... a Chinese invasive species here in WV that has been proliferating like MAD). One substantial whiff of a stinkbug gives me an instant blinding headache. And thus far I have not been able to find anything which can reliably destroy whatever the substance they emit when threatened/dead rapidly. I've tried different kinds of soap, hydrogen peroxide, undiluted bleach, rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, and no matter what I scrub with my hands will still smell like it afterward. I need to get some turpentine and acetone and try those as well. SOMETHING has to break the stuff down. They're just some potent sulfur compounds (of course) as far as I know. But their scent beats out dead and rotting animals, rotted food, poorly maintained latrines, or anything else I have come across. It's just so penetrating.

I am usually not a hateful person but she would deserve to be the mop that cleaned up the mess.
can't some dogs smell when their epileptic human is going to have a seizure? I thought there were therapy dogs for that. And, there ARE therapy dogs for diabetics. Do they smell something--like ketone bodies-- or do they just get help when their owner has a hypo or hyperglycemic crisis?

Maybe the smell is the bodies way of telling other humans to stay away from you. As in early humans and survival.

After hard workouts I have an ammonia like smell in my nose, but personally don't smell like ammonia. What's that about?

I'm not sure exact what the diabetic therapy dogs are smelling but they can detect a problem before hypoglycemia occurs and will alert owner.

Me too! Only on the side of the frozen shoulder. I think My arm pit just couldn't get enough air flow. Shoulder is better and the stink is gone.
