I was born and bred in Shroffold Road in the mid fifties and Durham hill with the 'pimple' was my playground when not at school. Went to Downderry infants and primary (which had just got a small new indoor pool) and then Malory. When about 15 or 16 years old half a dozen of us at school dinner time would remove our school jackets and ties and pop into the Tavern (remember the old Police box/Tardis outside) and order up a large plate of cheese and cucumber sandwiches with a pint ( brown ale in a dimple mug was my poison then) and to play a game of darts. I don't know who we thought we were kidding and I expect it annoyed the hell out of the old dinner time regulars, but they never showed it, bless 'um. Happy days. Moved away in '84 but made the mistake to go back for a nostalgic visit about six or seven years later and couldn't believe how the make up of the estate had changed. Any regrets about leaving, nah.

I worked at the Bal Tabarin on Saturday nights when they had the Disco and live bands. Sorry to see what they've done to it. My family were regulars at the Downham Tavern from the late 1940's. So I have lots of memories of the old place as it was.
Lived in Shroffold Road from the time I was born in 1949 up into the 1970's.
Went to Balmore Road, infants, Pendragon Junior School, and then onto Malory Secondary School.

The area has changed so much. I was born in Bromley Hospital and lived not far from the BP garage. I used to love the pet shop (Downham pet stores I think it was called) and my mum knew the owner of the Cloud 9 record shop.

Used to wait outside the exit then when the crowd came out bunked in or paid for one of our mates to go in then he would open the exit and let half a dozen of us in often chased round the Splendid by the Manager! Great times.

why were they allowed to pull that pub down....its a discrace...we used to have discos in that ball room...and drink in the pub....mental...i was bought up there..left malary school witch is opposite tavern up rd ....in 1986....these are my friends relatives...shame....yet again government talking away our heritage...the tavern was a stunning pub steeped with historu...i drank there my dad drank there and many relatives and freinds drank there...it was in the Guinness book of records for the longest bar in europe...that building should have been listed....tobpullbit down and build a 2 Bob Hungary horse or what ever the fuck it is...looks like it came out of a Lego box...way to go who's ever idear that was...if i had any awards left ide ingrave it awarded for one of the monumental fuckups in the history of the downham estate ...excuted with shere denomination and with a un faulting mum nut attitude against the resident's wishes....cool vid by the way...brings back memory s

Where does the name Bal Tabarin come from? Sounds Turkish

Bal Tabarin was a cabaret opened in Rue Victor-Massé near the Pialle in Paris in 1904. It closed in 1953.
