Hey. Ghost notes, and mute notes are practically the same thing. A ghost note is a mute note, put into the context of a groove. When a note is written in parantheses in tabs (like (3) or (9)) it means it's harmonic. Hold your finger lightly on the string, right above a fret and hit the string. (5th and 7th and 12th fret is easiest to ring). Ghost notes are written as "x" in tabs. Good luck!
An absolute master of ghost notes (at age 17) is Juliaplaysgroove. Her latest Luther Vandross cover made me realize how much I ignored an amazing band he had!
FINALLY! I've been seaching and trying so hard to get that note! I play salsa and Jazz and In salsa its used a lot in certain swings. Thank you! Amazing help!
Thanks Scott! I found a bass tab for 'hotel California's by the Eagles (brilliant bass line) and it uses ghost notes, but I didn't know what they were. Thanks again!
Hey somthingworng im also a rookie bassist and what I learned is that mute notes are notes of the bass you don't hold all the way completely, when you hit a mute not, you take you finger slightly off the string so you only hold the note for less than a second
My friend and I were chatting about Duran Duran's John Taylor a few weeks ago. She said that her ex, who used to play bass in a band, was listening to Rio one day when he said "That bass player's a bastard" (meaning he's really good). I just revisited Rio, and some of the comments were praising John's bass playing, saying he's playing _ghost notes,_ which is really difficult, apparently. Not knowing what ghost notes are, I searched for it, which is why I'm here. (You're fascinated by all that, I can tell. 😏) So, is John Taylor an underrated bass player?
These used to confuse the heck out of me. The best "easy" song to learn about ghost notes is " baby ive got your money" by odb. Most charts and tabs show both ghost notes on the line as any other note, but to play it, and play it right you have to hit 2 ghost notes in rapid succession. Simple line to learn( just 3 notes), and itll get a smile out of A few girls in the crowd later on.
Hi Scott, I am a bass player for about 5 months now, and I absolutely love your lessons. I've been learning so much thanks to you. My question now is, whats the difference between mute notes and ghost notes? In scores they are written in the same way(I think), and in tablature they are written as (3) and x respectively. Whats the difference between both sound wise and technique wise?
Thank you Scott, the Ghost Notes drove me crazy, but I have one question left. I don't seem to understand the Ghost Note of the open string. I know this is an old video from you but I really hope you can help me out. How do I play it? Btw I love your work. You are a great teacher.
Wow 9 years ago this video was uploaded. A great piece for ghost notes is Barbary Coast. Jaco plays ghosts notes within the groove for the entire song. It adds a bit of chopiness to the already great bass line.
excellent Scott Gonna send my next gig pay to ya $5.00 That my bottom price. You're a great bassist and teacher. I am referring as many people to you as I can
What about using a muted tap on the string as a ghost note? Like, sometime I instinctually kinda softly slap the muted string for the first ghost note, then mute and pluck for the second with the same finger on my right hand, and then let the third ring out, and it seems to have a little gallop feel to it. Is that, I guess, wrong?
This is so funny - I have the hardest time ***NOT*** playing dead notes because I play them to keep locked-in to the tempo!!!!!!!!!!! I guess it's kind of a crutch from the days when I was teaching myself how to play (by mimicking whatever I heard on the radio) and I've needed to un-learn it. Oh wait, first I'd better learn to be deliberate about the selecting the string to play the dead notes on.....Cool beans, Scott - thanks! :-)
I don't see it or get it. When I fret with a finger, a play a normal note. If I put the rest of my fingers on that same string I am fretting, I still play a normal note. So how do you make a ghost note?
the back of your left fingers (your fretting hand) touch the string while you play it and dampen the sound, just release the pressure on the fretting hand but keep touching the string while you play it

Lars Ole Okstad thank you
Thank you very much I thought that those were hammer ons.

🙏🏾
Thanks for clarifying this! I had no idea 😅
Thanks Scott, so simple yet very effective!
I can't thank you enough for all these videos Scott! They are great and thoroughly appreciated!
An absolute master of ghost notes (at age 17) is Juliaplaysgroove. Her latest Luther Vandross cover made me realize how much I ignored an amazing band he had!
She's insane on that instrument.
in essence them, the ghost notes are notes played without allowing the string you are playing to vibrate? its basically a percussive effect?
exactly.
FINALLY! I've been seaching and trying so hard to get that note! I play salsa and Jazz and In salsa its used a lot in certain swings. Thank you! Amazing help!
This dude looks like young Professor X and he’s killer at bass 🔥
great tutorial. I am a student at SBL. Thank god there are no more videos with this Drum N Bass music anymore :)
Thanks a lot, Scott. Greetings from Ghana
THANK YOU SO MUCH HOLY SHIT! These notes essentially were what slowed down my bass playing but you explained it perfectly!
Thanks Scott! I found a bass tab for 'hotel California's by the Eagles (brilliant bass line) and it uses ghost notes, but I didn't know what they were. Thanks again!
nice tutorial, i can finally see everything clear (talking about all your videos) thanks man
I absolutely love your bass🤘
Great lesson Scott Thanks bro
thanks! any jaco-feel related tutorials deserves a thumbs up
id like to see more if you have anymore input in this field of techniques

Funny, I’m watching this video because of JT too! I play guitar but I finally decided to at least play DD songs on bass :)
John Taylor is a very underrated bass player. He recorded Rio at age 23. The ghost notes in that are epic.
Thanks. Very useful.
Really like your stuff, man, as it's very well done; great information, solid examples, very articulate delivery. My sincerest thanks.
Really helped me out man, thanks!

John Taylor in Rio/ Duran Duran
Geddy Lee's been doing this for a long time

Desde Argentina!.....great video!. thanks!

excellent Scott Gonna send my next gig pay to ya $5.00 That my bottom price. You're a great bassist and teacher. I am referring as many people to you as I can
Great lesson - thank you.
so nice I like base
Очень вдохновляющий музыкант.
Wow - I didn't realise that this was what people mean't when they said they played ghost notes...I have been playing these without knowing lol

You can use right hand taps (or 'drops') for ghost notes yes!
I feel like the ghost notes are one of the few thing that seperates the Greats when you do it so well you just ass so much more thennnotes to mix
What those little numbers in tabs next to the normal sized numbers? The ones that look like the square or cubed symbol. Are those ghost notes?
This is so funny - I have the hardest time ***NOT*** playing dead notes because I play them to keep locked-in to the tempo!!!!!!!!!!! Hi Scott! Should I mute e and d string the same way as we muted notes on string a?
Great lesson, great sound, i saw you wearing gloves before Ettienne Mbappe as well.
Some Gary Wilis vibe here!
he explains it on his website
cgmartinez11142 👌
it's got something to do with nerve problems in the brain, it says on his website that the gloves act as a sensory barrier :)
I don't see it or get it. When I fret with a finger, a play a normal note. If I put the rest of my fingers on that same string I am fretting, I still play a normal note. So how do you make a ghost note?
You don't press all the way down onto the fret, just rest the fingers on the string
this is awsome i'm subscibing(: but i must ask whats with the glove?
check his website. look at "misc."
What is the difference between a gos ghost note and a harmonic.
A ghost note is a deadened note, a harmonic is an overtone. They sound quite different
Ciuld you please tell us what speakers are you using behind at your wall Scott..?
those are the KRK rokits, not sure what number though
Having to rewatch this after 4 years because I forgot how to play ghost notes
i LOVE that accent :D video's pretty nice either ;D
What bass is that?
James Median probably one I can’t afford
Why has grove ?
How is groove ?
So it's just a muted note, why use ghost note in tableture instead of just an X
Prince hated ghost notes
Why the gloves?
***** He has Focal Dystonia which is a neurological condition that affects the muscles in his hands.
+Quiet Viking So, excuse my ignorance, What exactly do the gloves do to help? (if they help anything at all)
+Joshua Blouin provide pressure and gently constrict the nerves which is all that's needed to dampen the symptoms.
Do you do finger puppets in your spare time?
why do you use a glove to play?
Weverton9000 He made a video on it, check it out.
please don’t ignore this, Jesus died for our sins and he loves you, turn to him to be saved, he’s coming soon, spread his message ✝️
God Bless
I thought ghost notes were normal notes just played very silent and dead notes normally played but muted notes, as in this video
Whenever I try they don’t sound right at all, they just don’t sound like anything, no percussion, nothing
@ 7:31 Dave lubes up his plucking fingers for another go. ;)
I still have no idea what he's doing, he's just telling me he's doing it. What stops the string vibrating.
the back of your left fingers (your fretting hand) touch the string while you play it and dampen the sound, just release the pressure on the fretting hand but keep touching the string while you play it
Can not get any clearer really.
@lessthen3fyi thats because of a medical condition ....thats y.
He has somekind of (probably skin) condition...
...whats with the glove...
666Henthorn666 He made a video on it
He has an illness where his hands move by themselves so the glove helps him control it
Why does this jabroni play with a glove on his bass hand?
marco abreo did you get jabroni from the rock??? Lol
Run Down you bet
Nerve condition. His fingers move on their own when they're not touching something
