Hello everyone and welcome to my long awaited favourite fantasy books of all time video! I've gotten to the point where I make a 'favourite books of all time video' every year or two. But I've been waiting for this one because I'm an indecisive human being and I'm just so excited about so many fantasy books at any given point. But here we are! And I'm already concerned that His Dark Materials should have been higher on the list bc I'm just about to finish the final book!
This list includes high fantasy, magical realism, middle grade / YA books and anything that really falls into the speculative / fantasy genre.
I hope you guys enjoy this video and find some fun fantasy books to read! Take care 💛

WELCOME to my *long awaited* (I mean, I'm not sure you guys were waiting but I CERTAINLY WAS) favourite fantasy books of all time! This was supposed to be ten books. This was more than ten books. This video became more chaotic than I thought it would but I hope you enjoy it 😅

If you like Howl’s Moving Castle, you should try The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. The main character is just like Howl but you get sooo many more scenes because its a series AND it’s from his POV. I think you would love it. The Thief is the first book and it may seem a little slow but don’t judge the series based on that. It just gets better and better with each book. Please give it a try. ❤️

Your number one book and your book zero are something we have in common. I loved HP, but I think what gave me the push to write was Howl's Moving Castle. I love that the story was whimsical and fun, and you could just lose yourself in a grand adventure.
I can't agree completely with your Neverwhere feelings. It actually ended up in my DNR list :(

I struggled with the first few chapters too! But I finished it and LOVED it. My theory is that it's meant to be a drag to read at first because Linus' life is a drag and then as his life picks up so does the book. My advice is that it doesn't have much action and it reads like it was meant to be a movie. It also really does kinda read like middle grade. I hope that helps!

I don’t know if it’s your type of fantasy, but I recently read the first part of the Riyria Revelations. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the book. Unfortunately, my library doesn’t have the rest of the series. This isn’t a fantasy series, but I love the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfield. A steampunk book. The Bloodsworn saga by John Gywnne. For reasons, I could not get into Jonathan Stranger and Mr Norrell, which bums me because I love Piranesi. Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. Artemis Fowel by Eoin Coffer. I even enjoyed the Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind.
Problem I have is finding good books that have no romance because - in my opinion - I find a lot of books especially fantasy must include romance despite there is no reason for one. I am struggling to locate books that fit my taste but have no romance. I have searched for recommendations but a large portion, I find, have romance as a main subplot or plot.

Personally I think a favorites list can consist of 12 books from only three authors if you want. 😂 My top 10 books of all time list has repeat authors. I have both Piranesi and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and I want to read both of them so much!!! I may start with Piranesi. I need to give Howl’s Moving Castle another try. I didn’t enjoy it much when I tried it before. My two favorite fantasies of all time are The Lord of the Rings series and The Belgariad series by David Eddings. And right after that is the Percy Jackson series. I’ll be ordering The Lonely Castle in the Mirror from the UK soon, and I just recently bought Nights at the Circus. Angela Carter’s writing makes we want to hug everything she does, and yet I can necessarily say I love it because it’s always so visceral and earthy, if that makes sense.

Piranesi is my favourite book of all times. I adore it. I seriously think about it every single day. Today I celebrate 1 year since I read it the first time. Just because Sussana Clarke was ispired by Jorge Louis Borges for this masterpiece, I will read him aswell.

Thank you so much for recommending The Ocean At The End of The Lane, it’s my favorite Neil Gaiman’s story now!!! It resonated a lot with my childhood, which made my reading experience so immersive. And Neverwhere was sooo good, especially the spin off about Marquis de Carabas. It seems I love dark fantasy, haha, probably why The Graveyard Book didn’t do much for me :)

I love old folklore based stories too. Not so much the English stuff which I dont know as much about tbh. My love is Celtic Folklore. Growing up here in Scotland and half my family being from Ireland too, I was literally raised on Celtic myth and legend about the Fae and their world.

@@kali8025 Oh ok 👌🏻. So honestly I learned the stories from my grannies and aunties. Not really from books but I mean if I were to recommend some from the collection I have now it would probably just be the classics that everyone says. Like the volumes that gather all the original stories.
