I find it amazing that with the inclusion of this gorgeous rendition in an otherwise light movie, Auld Lang Syne went from being a meaningless holiday anthem to being a poignant, tear-inducing favorite song about love, friendship, loss and everlasting memory. Most of us had never heard as powerful a version of this song before SATC. If SJP and Co gave us nothing else, they gave us this. Thank you.
This is the classic Scottish version of Auld Lang Syne as Robert Burns collected and embellished it. Mairi Campbell does a wonderful job with it but there are quite a number of others by Scottish singers who sing it like this. You won't hear them on commercial TV. I have a playlist on my channel.
Yes...Sex and the City brought me here...but it took ten long years to do it...The most beautiful rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" I've ever heard... If you've had a trying year this version brings comfort somehow...
This is a typical Scots version of the song though. Nothing special about this version from my perspective which is a Scottish perspective. It's pretty typical of the way the song is supposed to be sung.
Going to bed early but decided to listen to this beautiful song beforehand because the world needs a beautiful lullaby now more than ever. Happy New Year! May we fear less and love more. #2022
Listening to this song and thinking of a friend who died suddenly this week...remembering times long passed, thinking how there will be no new memories made with this friend. The song helps to recall, replay and relive old days. Thank you for the music and the sentiments that accompany this remembering.
Thank you for sharing this video. Since I had learned this song as a Scottish traditional song at a junior high school about 40 years ago, I've been looking for records or CDs of this song and this one is the best. This is very beautiful . Hope people keep singing this song forever.
I absolutely LOVE this song! It's so beautiful it literally brings me to tears. I could listen to this song over and over and over again and love it more and more each time I hear it. The SATC girls have been my fav for years and I thank the series for allowing this wonderful song into the SATC movie. Muah!! #mairicampbell #voiceofanangel
i got to know this version through SATC, this is the best , most pure , most magical , most emotional version of this song ever made !!! this has a very special place in my heart ❤
I play this song with my gitarre and sing IT, and that goes hevy on my soul. I love the langues "gälisch" so much, i feel the many hundred years of scottish Highlands, the sagas, the mirikles. Mayby i live in a nother life there. Thank you for this wonderfull Song Version! Let us help that gälisch not died
The best song version of this 1788 poem ever; love it. Makes me think of When Harry Met Sally too, and Billy Crystal asking Meg Ryan what it means and she says "it's about old friends." It really is more like "days gone by." Either way, lovely tune to commence out with the old, in with the new.
such a lovely meaningful song...makes me miss me MUm and Pop ..memories of a kinder time,safer,loved,protected...yes,for Auld Lang Syne,i'll lift a cup and remember the love..and those Irish blue eyes, eternally.Much love an dluck to you all in 2017,godspeed
I'm an ethnic Georgian, my wife is ethnic Russian, our two daughters are born in the USA, 5 and 2, and they will not, under any circumstance, go to sleep without listening to this song!!!
As far as I know, this song wasn't originally meant to be a Christmas/New Year thing... but to me, this is definitely a new years song. This version is the best and it makes me cry everytime.
There is a degree of melancholy, to yearn for old times past that we cherished then and hope to cherish again. It is a call to listen to that note your heartstrings pull. I don't know a more beautiful song.
i’m not christian, i’m not a native english speaker, yet this song gives me goosebumps. i love it so much. i discovered first the lyrics written on an old soup cup I got from the fleamarket, then watching sex and the city, they seemed familiar and then I found this song. magical
My wife was watching sex in the city and heard this song and I reconized it from somewhere. Still don't know where I heard it before but it's very beautiful. This is the best version of it.
This so so beautiful, I'm a 64" 20st shaven headed hairy arsed no nonsense plain speaking guy, but this song fills my eyes everytime, but I dont know why? Must be the irish in me?
To love and to be loved is the greatest of all God's gifts to mankind. To forgive and to be forgiven is the greatest of all gifts from one to another. Happy New Year.
Great to hear a different tune. Two very small issues with the words... The words are, "For auld lang syne my jo" not "...my jove...". "My jo" simply means, "my dear" as in another song which has, "John Anderson my jo John". Second point; "We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet", rather than "...ae cup...". Great song!
Have known this song all my life, first the danish version, and many years leater the Scottish. It becomes more and more beatiful for ervytime I hears it...mabye because I'm getting older, and things have ather meanings. That's life. And I love this beatiful rendition ❤ (and as a dane, I diden't know at first it was a 'New Year song) but 'the end of an party' song, where everbody stod up, hold hands and sang to and for eachother, it was very beatiful because it was so heart felt ❤
I heard it last night during "The Sex and The City" movie and was so touched, I never thought I'd find it and was amazed how famous it is and I'd only heard parts of the English version a few times on New Year's Eve. It brings tears to my eyes thinking of the friend I lost this year and I can't stop playing it. Thank you for the most poignant song I've ever heard. This is now my new all time favorite Happy New Year to everyone 2019
Jimmy I hummed this one night and you fell asleep in my arms - I love you all the things I had planned all the things I needed to make up for and now your gone…
This song is always my favorite song to play going into another new year. Can’t wait to see what this year has in store. Hope everyone is having an amazing night ♥️ Happy 2025 everyone.
Lynne Cholette commented: 'I liked it a lot but next time can you wright [sic] it so we can understand! I can't learn something that doesn't make much sense to me' I'm not sure if she realises that she would need to find a translation. So many people around the world have heard and sung the first verse of this song (usually sung to a different tune... Mairi is singing the original tune from 1711). The song has been widely adopted - but usually only the first verse is sung. So although the phrase 'auld lang syne' may seem odd, the sense that this is a song of nostalgia for past times does come across. The words were written (or possibly adapted in part from an earlier song) by the Scottish national poet Robert Burns and. It's not surprising that the lyrics should be challenging to a modern English speaker, for two reasons: firstly, the date of the song (it was first published in 1711) and secondly because it's written in Scots rather than in what was standard English for the 16th Century. So singing all the verses to this song presents challenges to a modern singer (even a modern Scottish singer, much less someone from elsewhere).Sometimes they are adapted into modern English, but most often only the first verse and chorus are sung, with the chorus often being repeated. See Wikipedia for good information about the song, plus an English translation and also a guide to pronunciation of the Scots.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne

Never seen It's a Wonderful Life huh?
@@xtinkerbellax3 yes, the song is in Its a Wonderful Life, but it is NOT nearly as hauntingly beautiful as this version.
This song is so comforting though I couldn’t stop crying when I listen to it, so beautiful, so calming
Makes me cry, no matter how many times I hear it. Yes, SATC brought me here too.
Me too.
this was played today at the funeral of my best friend. she loved this song. :) may we all live our lives with loads of love and happiness.
