Hi, I've been watching for years and really enjoy the channel. Back in the mid 70s I worked two summers at Post In Battle Creek to help pay for school. I worked a few times in the building that made Grape Nuts. Believe it or not the product actually starts out as a loaf of bread and is then dried and processed to make those "nuts". I have fond memories of snatching a chunk of that steaming bread and snacking on it! So, it was funny to see bread being made from it. Keep up the great content!
My mom would make these on Sunday as muffins then toss them in the freezer. We'd put one or two out before going to bed and that would be breakfast before school during the week. During the 1970s, it was considered 'healthy'.
Muffins, yes! I knew that recipe looked vaguely familiar. Mom would chop up raisins or dates to put into them. Thanks Glen and Emmyali not only for the memory, but the reason to go buy some Grape Nuts.
As a teenager in the 80s I made them as muffins too. They were our favorite. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I'll have to get my daughter to bring some grape nuts back from UK.
A few years after I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic, it became fashionable to tell diabetics to eschew fat lest they die of heart disease, and eat complex carbohydrates aplenty. I ate Grape-Nuts a lot. It does have malt (quick-acting sugar), and the starch is very digestible. Raises the blood glucose faster than eating candy. Also it’s so compact that it’s easy to eat too much. Arguably one of the worst foods for any diabetic. Using it as an ingredient is surely better than eating it for breakfast!
One of the first things I found out when I was diagnosed (late onset at 42) was to avoid cereal. It's insane how fast it spikes your blood glucose, even plain stuff like Bran Flakes. But I guess that's what it's designed for, to give you a boost in the morning.
And they still recommend a high-carb diet for diabetics. If you want to upset the dietician in the hospital, refuse to eat all those carbs they put on your plate. I think I must be doing something right, as I am still on oral meds after 30 years and my HbA1Cs are in the normal range.
@@jjudy5869 i'm diabetic and have never had a dietician tell me to eat a lot of carbs, what they told me was to eat whole grains when i did eat bread and pasta
Type 2 diabetic here, currently controlled. I love Grape-Nuts and have since I was a kid. I don't know where Post gets their serving suggestion for the cereal from, but I rarely eat 1/2 cup of it at a time. I follow what Weight Watchers taught me in the early '80s: a serving of any cereal is 3/4 oz. It doesn't look like much, but when it's added to a carton of Greek yogurt or 1/2 cup milk it's more than enough.
When I was an aide in the hospital they said complex carbs like toast for diabetics, cc with peanut butter before bed so the sugar doesn’t drop during the night.
My late husband loved Grapenuts. I thought he was kind of nuts for liking Grapenuts. : ) Seeing the cereal box in Glen's kitchen made me smile, remembering when Grapenuts used to be in my kitchen here in NC. Thanks, Glen. I love everything about your channel.
About to throw this in the oven. Added 2 smashed bananas I needed to get used up and some cinnamon to make it more appealing to my kids. We'll see how it goes!
I have a history with Grape Nuts. It was my breakfast favorite when I was a child. Back then I would put them in a bowl and pour the milk on them before I bathed and dressed giving them time to soften so I wouldn't break my teeth! Had a hankering a for some of the old time breakfast cereal a few weeks ago, and found that Grape Nuts cost 5.89 per box in US dollars. So much for reliving my childhood memories. Love your shows Glen, even though I don't do any baking. TY.....
In my experience they are ubiquitous here in the USA! Wikipedia says that production stopped for a while due to the pandemic and resumed at full capacity in mid-March 2021. There’s a link to a manufacturer page that is vague about the length of the hiatus and doesn’t mention anything about Canada not getting a return.
I remember if you had a bowl of Grape-Nuts and didn't wash the bowl right a way they would cement themselves to the bowl. You would have to chisel them off.
I had never heard of such a thing. But seeing Glen get all happy face and say he really like it. It made me go and buy some Grape Nuts. I made this recipe. It is really good. I am glad I made it and loved it. I will def be making this in the future as i have a whole box of Grape Nuts.
I have made banana bread with grape nuts since the late 70’s the recipe came from the box. And I prefer them as muffins though I always had to make a loaf also for my dad 😊
This is why I love my community cookbooks. I found a recipe for Grape Nuts bread in one of my collection decades ago and it was one of my favorite quick breads for years. It makes a nice gift at Christmas since it is unique yet so delicious.
My New England grandmother past down a delicious recipe for Shredded Wheat Bread. It has molasses in it, which gives it such a great taste and smell. I always knew when she was baking that bread because the smell in her kitchen was amazing!
Oh my soul, my grandmother used to make that as well! We’re from New Brunswick. They used to sometimes call it health bread. It’s my absolute favourite bread. I still have her recipe!

I live in South Carolina, USA, and my local Publix Supermarket does have Grape Nuts cereal on the shelf. I'm going to try this. It looks very similar to a muffin recipe I've made quite a few times using All Bran cereal.
I recently made some sour cream (used plain yogurt cause that's what I had)banana bread and softened some grape nuts in the yogurt before adding. It's great.
omg yes, grape nut ice cream is my favorite kind of ice cream! yes i am oldish.. but i've loved them since i was in my teens. I think they remind me of my grandparents cause that's the only place i would get the cereal as a kid.
My husband's favourite ice cream flavour is Grape Nut, and it is indeed readily available in the Maritimes from numerous companies (we live in Nova Scotia). And one origin story is that the ice cream variety was invented in 1919 in a restaurant in Wolfville NS where we live. It's not my favourite flavour, but many people in this part of Canada love it. 😋
My grandmother made muffins and my favorite, grape nuts custard, back in the 1950’s. You can still get them in the U.S., so I occasionally make the custard. Thanks for the memories.
I eat Grape Nuts a lot now. They are now easily available in the US, but the first year of the pandemic, if you found a store that had them online, they were priced 3-4x regular price. I remember a recipe for mock pecan pie that people made when I was a kid. I didn’t like nuts much then, so the mock pie was more appealing to me.
One of my earliest memories in life. Grapenuts were my favorite. My mother opened a new box and gave it to me and, I spit it out. She was confused and, I was mad! Someone had made my favorite food taste terrible! She got the old box our of the trash. Her and my dad were looking at them and, my dad noticed that the box had a new tag added to the lable. It was the first box with the new formula fortified to meet the new US Government mandatory nutrition standard. I've always thought that that's when they started adding so much sugar to breakfast cereal to cover up the heavy mineral taste the fortification added.
When I came to Nova Scotia 20 years ago we could buy Grape Nuts at any grocery. Many years ago they stopped carrying them. I now buy them when I’m in the US. Makes for a terrific vegetarian nut loaf and looks like this bread is also worth trying.
I’m pretty sure that Grape-Nuts are on the shelves here in Louisville Kentucky now. I think I’ll give this a try. I remember having them as cereal as a kid. The trick is to not put too much in your bowl because it takes forever to chew the crunchy little nuggets!
They are listed as "in stock" at the local supermarket and Target here in NJ, so I guess they're making them again. Years ago we got some as a free sample. Both my then-husband and I hated them. I put them out for the squirrels & birds and they didn't eat them either. To me, they really do taste & chew like the seeds that are inside of grapes - not good.
I love grape nut ice cream! I remember it from when I was a kid. Back in the 70's. Couldn't find it for years. A local ice cream company, I think from Maine, started carrying it. It must not have been a popular flavor, our grocery store stopped carrying it. Don't know what it is about it but I love it.
My local grocers still sell Grapenuts, and with your assertion that they do not go stale, I, like my mom, add the milk, then put them in the fridge for 10 minutes before eating. Also, I remember when they came in an unlined plain pasteboard cereal box because...Grapenuts cannot go stale!
Curiosity meant that I had to look up the company that you mentioned. Grape nuts are expensive to buy but are available in all UK supermarkets. I love the malty flavour. I am intrigued by the idea of grape nut ice cream mentioned by some of your followers .
The custard shop from my childhood (1990s, and is still around today) makes a lightly maple frozen custard and adds grapenuts to it. They call it Brownbread, and it's delicious. When I'm back home visiting my parents, I always stop by for some of it. A scoop or brownbread and a scoop of lemon is a fantastic comforting combination
Grape Nuts. Gravel with milk for breakfast. I quite like them ish. I buy a box once a year, or so, to feed the grandkids. It gives them something to talk about with their friends. On hard done by their lives are. Or how nicely weird their grandad is.
My grandfather used to pour grape-nuts on coffee ice cream. I still buy 'em occasionally. Love it. We have grape-nuts ice cream here in Massachusetts too, by the way!
I love my 2 ...4....and 8 cup measuring cups for baking, cooking, making tea, serving gravy or heating a bit of soup. Bread is always better with butter!!
A favorite childhood dessert of my mother’s is Grape Nuts pudding - it’s a custard. Maybe it’s unique and nostalgic the New England area? I’d never heard of it until she ordered it in a restaurant when we were visiting Massachusetts. For mom, it’s a comfort food.
@itzel1735 that sounds right for what I remember the pudding looked like on the plate - it was cut in to a square. That was in 2012. I saw a recipe for it years ago but don’t recall the details.
Does anyone else stop the video at the recipe page, so they can read the other other recipes?! Can't help it - now I want to try the tea rolls from the little old ladies of Yarmouthport!
Just made a loaf this cold Ottawa afternoon and it is delicious. I have always loved GrapeNuts and luckily can still get boxes at a local Scottish/Irish store.
reminded me of the time I made some brown bread(it was either pumpernickel or anadama) and the yeast failed so I ended up with a brick. My husband ground it up and we had perfect homemade grape nuts!
Interesting!!! Please note that in Jamaica 🇯🇲 Grapenut is used in their ice-cream and it is very popular ice-cream call grapenut ice-cream. I can get a box of grapenut to buy in Asda Supermarket the same as Walmart here in the UK 🇬🇧
maybe some kind of cross cultural thing, jamaica and nova scotia being historically so close, it was a popular recipe here too. now there's a jamaican grocery store close to downtown dartmouth there might be a revival.
I can buy Grape-Nuts at my local grocery store in the states. I know in Louisiana our local grocery store Rouses carries it as well as Walmart & Target. I’m curious about this and now want to make it.
in the 90's when i inherited an unwanted bread machine, i used to replace a significant chunk of the flour with grape nuts. and i thought i was so clever for "discovering" this barley bread hack.
I’m in TN and Grape Nuts did disappear off the shelves but have been back now for a bit. The ice cream thing is funny because I like it as a topping for ice cream. 😊
This looks good. My mom made muffins using Grape Nuts. I’m in Minnesota and we can get Grape Nuts at the local grocery store and I also checked in Amazon carries them.
My mother made these in the 1950’s. Very good though the cereal itself wasn’t a favourite. Fun to remember. I had no idea the cereal was still available. Remember too that the muffins were tiny in comparison to today’s.😊
I was wondering where you managed to find a box! I'd love to try that bread. Our local ice cream parlour, Holman's, manages to source Grape-Nuts from somewhere for their homemade ice cream and it's delicious. Though, I have a feeling anyone who enjoys it is a person who really likes Grape-Nuts to begin with or grew up eating that flavour.
Here in my corner of the US you can find both the original Grape Nuts and the Grape Nuts Flakes. I grew up eating the former and heard about the latter listening to the old Jack Benny Radio show. I admit this is an interesting recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Grape nuts were a family favorite. We always added some coffee to the grape nuts with milk. The hot coffee softened the crunch and gave you a hot/warm cereal. Try it!
This sounds like it would be really good with rum or whiskey soaked raisins, or currants mixed in, or some kind of diced dried fruits. Cinnamon or nutmeg might go well with it too. I'm going to pick up a box and experiment.
My late aunt was a French Canadian from Manitoba and was a terrific cook. Her bread recipe containes pre cooked Sonny Boy cereal and produces six loaves of the moistest, lightest, tastiest bread out there. I am going to weigh all the ingredients and convert into grams so it can be scaled down hopefully into two loaves at a time. I remember eating grape nuts as a kid and I thought they were bitter so I never tried them a second time.
I think this recipe actually used to be in the grape nuts box itself. I remember making it several times growing up as a kid because they're so easy to make.
I love Grape Nuts! It’s been hard to find in my stores here in Georgia for the past couple years unfortunately. Looks like a good bread! Thanks!🎉 Just checked Amazon and a 20.5 oz. box goes for $4.49.
I have no clue WHERE the idea of grapenut ice cream originated, but I never heard of it before moving to the Boston suburbs fifty years ago. I found grapenut custard ice cream only at independent ice cream stands/shops and it became one of my favorites. Also at that time (when, IIRC, Velveeta tasted more cheesy than it does today), I knew someone who made a zucchini casserole featuring grapenuts. My effort to reproduce it came out watery. She cut the zukes into half inch dice so couldn't have wrung it dry as one would with grated squash. Perhaps it was salted to drain it. There was probably some sweated allium involved. The squash was mixed with a sauce made with evaporated milk, Velveeta, and grapenuts, put into a casserole dish, topped with grapenuts that had been moistened with melted butter, and baked. It was a great side dish for a grilled or baked animal protein. I could see diced potato or sweet potato being included.
Dutch Dreams on Vaughan Road (in Toronto, near St. Clair and Bathurst) offers grape nut ice cream. Finally tried it a while back - wasn't too bad at all!
Thank you for this! You've reminded me that I have a box in the cupboard that I should use up soon. I like that by adding Grapenuts, a whole-grain cereal, that you get some heft in the quickbread. I will be trying this soon! BTW, I went down a rabbit-hole at one point looking for ways to make non-meat versions of sausage gravy and found a recipe with Grapenuts. It wasn't too bad when I made it, actually. I just forget that I have it in the cupboard. I won't now!
Grape Nuts as hot cereal is lovely but I only get the craving once in a blue moon. This will absolutely be made soon with the partial box that's been sitting in the cupboard for a bit minute.
Oh I’d love a slice of that on this cool northern Ontario morning ⛄️ do you think of any other cereals that could sub in for grape nuts? Raisin bran???
I used to make bread and muffins out of Cheerios when my kids were home. I can't digest them myself. You would probably need more of them, though, since they're not as dense.
Too cool! Geez I remember Grapenuts as a kid....chew chew chew 😂 or make a bowl and let it sit for half hour or so and....as a kid we'd sneak in a bunch of sugar😂 being older they'd break my teeth😜
This B'Bommer says Grape Nut Lovers unite ! All kidding aside, I've also been eating them since I was a kid & have sprinkled them on many things. We currently always add them to Crunchy Granola Raisin Bran cereal. Yummo! Besides their crunch & flavor, I also really appreciate the amount of Iron, B6, Folate , Thiamin & other nutrients they pack in those tiny little bits. 😛 I'll have to give this loaf a spin . I wonder if a smashed banana might taste good in there, too ? And yes, they are available here in the US, all be it they don't come cheap 🤑. Stay warm up there, you two !!. 🏖 Kj in Tampa Bay 🥰🤗
I was curious so I checked Target here in Minneapolis, they have Grape Nuts again. Now I need to look up the local news stories, I sorta remember the company stopping production to focus on more popular items……. Due to production issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic Grape-Nuts were temporarily discontinued in 2021
Grape nuts are made by Post Cereal, not General Mills. I doubt if Minnesota local news talks about Grape Nuts, unless to mention their unavailability during the COVID pandemic. Cheers,

Yes, of course I do, too!
All the time!
Absolutely, then i wonder if Glen will make them some day. Would make for an interesting series- "Farm team recipes"
Always. And then take a screenshot shot if its a recipe I want to try.
Just made a loaf this cold Ottawa afternoon and it is delicious. I have always loved GrapeNuts and luckily can still get boxes at a local Scottish/Irish store.
Grape Nut pudding was really popular in a diner I worked in back in the late '60s. It was custardy and delicious.
That looks beautiful - may have to make this
reminded me of the time I made some brown bread(it was either pumpernickel or anadama) and the yeast failed so I ended up with a brick.
My granny made grape nut ice cream growing up and I cannot wait to try this.
I’m in TN and Grape Nuts did disappear off the shelves but have been back now for a bit. The ice cream thing is funny because I like it as a topping for ice cream. 😊
I haven't thought about Grape Nuts in years. I'd like to try this recipe.
Interesting timing. Just last night I finished my box of Grape Nuts! Now I have to grab more!
This looks good. My mom made muffins using Grape Nuts. I’m in Minnesota and we can get Grape Nuts at the local grocery store and I also checked in Amazon carries them.
[5:41] Best before 10/04/22; it's a quality assurance date, not an expiration. As long as the package remains sealed they can last a long long time.
My grandmother made the same recipe with bran flakes for years when we were at our camp in northern Maine
Amazing looks delicious +1👍😋
Here in my corner of the US you can find both the original Grape Nuts and the Grape Nuts Flakes. I grew up eating the former and heard about the latter listening to the old Jack Benny Radio show. I admit this is an interesting recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Grape Nuts are rocks!!!
I have never enjoyed Grape Nuts, but I would be willing to try the bread.
Grape-nuts were one of the only cold cereals I sort of liked.
Anyone else remember the Grape-Nuts ad with Euell Gibbons? "Tastes like wild hickory nuts".
Love grapenuts! Fav 90's cereal from my Mom's health phase 😉🤣😍 We have them here in the US on our cereal shelves at our grocery stores. 💜
I made this bread, yummy. Mine didn't turn out as pretty as yours but it is delicious. Thanks for sharing.
In Maine they make grape nut ice cream and grape nut pudding. Yum
This looks Great! I have to try this, I always liked grap nuts cereal. Thanks for sharing w us!
Lemon zest and walnuts are a great addition to that recipe
It does look like the kind of bread that would be good toasted with a little butter and jam. Thanks.
I think this recipe actually used to be in the grape nuts box itself. I remember making it several times growing up as a kid because they're so easy to make.
This looks really good
I love Grape Nuts!
We can get grapenuts here in the southern US. They weren’t off the shelves long before we got them back
Dutch Dreams on Vaughan Road (in Toronto, near St. Clair and Bathurst) offers grape nut ice cream. Finally tried it a while back - wasn't too bad at all!
I grew up on grapenuts. This sounds interesting. I think I can still find it at the local super market. Might try it out.
I remember grape nuts muffins.
Grape Nuts are on the shelves in the USA. Saw a box, yesterday.
Grape-Nut ice cream is one of my favorites! I’m originally from Maine and it’s fairly common there.
Maybe Bran Buds, but doubt they'd have that super crunchy texture.
I used to make bread and muffins out of Cheerios when my kids were home. I can't digest them myself. You would probably need more of them, though, since they're not as dense.
Grape Nuts Pudding is great. A New England Diner fare.
Too cool! Geez I remember Grapenuts as a kid....chew chew chew 😂 or make a bowl and let it sit for half hour or so and....as a kid we'd sneak in a bunch of sugar😂 being older they'd break my teeth😜
They are back on the shelf here in the US at the grocery stores.
that would make great french toasts
Cheers,
The grape nuts are hard little critters indeed. Like eating a bowl of buckshot 😅😂❤
I have this from my Great Grandmother from Iowa and she marked it 1937. Her recipe states to leave it in the milk overnight.
