    As someone who lives in maple country, this is awesome! I learned a lot during this video, very well done as usual! Thats really interesting that its smokey. I've had a few maple whiskies I really enjoyed that had that character.

      Thanks! Looking back it’s probably dependent on which grade maple syrup you use. If you use a lighter syrup it might not have that Smokey character

    We are working on a project we call Maple Drank. It is pure maple sap (1.010 right out of the tree) boiled down to 1.100 and pitched with wine yeast. So sort of the opposite way of getting to mead strength "maple must". Cheers!

      Yes, I was thinking of doing it this way as well. I boil all my own sap and I think this would be a good way to make a drink with less total boil time.

    Another great video Trent. Question: I see that you always seem to use your refractometer for you final gravity reading. Do you use a calculator, like the one at Brewersfriend to get an accurate reading, or does your refractometer give accurate readings with alcohol in the solution? Maybe I just need a better refractometer!

    • @TheBruSho
      @TheBruSho  3 роки тому +1

      Hey great question. Yes I always use a calculator since alcohol effects the reading. I do it because I find it easier than using a hydrometer and collecting a large sample. But occasionally I do both to compare and make sure my refractometer is accurate. Thanks!

    Interestingly there was a historic farmers brew in Vermont called Maple beer. Essentially watered down maple syrup boiled with hops and fermented. Usually drunk after the grain harvest farmers did mention that a pint of it was enough to knock you off your feet so it's probably not far off from 10% ABV.

      Thanks for the idea. My plan is to boil my sap down to the right gravity and ferment from there instead of diluting syrup. I want to cut down on boil time. Maybe I'll try a batch with some hops thrown in.

    Another great video. I have had beers with maple syrup in them. I have had beers aged in maple syrup. I can't say that I have had maple wine but I am willing to try! If you were trying to clear this up with gelatin or another fining agent would you add before or after you back sweeten?

    • @TheBruSho

    This is exactly what I was looking for when I wondered if I could make something similar to mead with maple instead of honey. Thanks!
    Was it tolerable before you backsweetened it, and just not to your liking, or would you recommend potentially altering the initial recipe?

    • @TheBruSho
      @TheBruSho  3 роки тому +2

      That’s great! This turned out fantastic just how I did it in the video. I wouldn’t change anything. The slight sweetness plays nicely with it and balances the alcohol burn. But if you want it more dry you can go without sweetening and it will be great.

    If you can find Grade B maple syrup, I've heard its more flavorful. It's a shame all you can ever find in most areas is Grade A. It looks like there's Grade B on Amazon for ~$40/gallon.
