My father who is 79, played this kind of music throughout my childhood. I have such respect for all the wonderful music of the past. Thanks Dad for introducing me to it!!!
I love hearing that some of the younger generation appreciate the music from my days, my children heard them too and even though they keep up with today's they still listen to and know all the older ones and so do their children now.
In 1965 I saw JoeTex sing this live in Los Angeles on The Lloyd Thaxton Show. Joe met us in the green room; he was memorably polite and very cool, all at once!
When men would sing about the love they had for another woman. When they kept their pants up and looked like men. Handsome clean cut smelled good hair neat!!! I miss the men of yesterday!!!!👌
Those were the days. Listen to the tenderness in his voice, I remember my father playing this record as a child, I eat, sleep and breathe music I did have an excellent teacher. My Father thank you, Dad!
This song came into my head today after many years. It goes without saying I now can not get it out. I remember hearing this when first released and how much I loved it then and now.
Love this - was just a child when this was first released I am now in my 60s and discovering these oldies but goodies all over again - sorry to say this but modern music just doesn't cut it for me

Growing up in 64 when this came out.We blasted the radio. We were young. But we knew there was truth in the words. That Joe Tex sang to us. Rest in peace .God bless the dead....!!!!
70s nostalgia everybody on my neighborhood block sitting on the front porch blasting this down home music all our parents were from down south Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee etc. Us preteens had to listen to this great music Now I glad our parents introduced us to rhythm & blues……🎼 BEST MUSIC 🎼
The year was 1969 I had a hard cover book with the words of this song, I remembered standing on a ice drum with a stick for a microphone Singing with the loudest voice I can to this song.... Joe Tex.. RIP
And into March of 2021...! ! I'm holding on to this great song as a young man back in the 70's would be jamming in the basement partys back in San Fran.
Even though my children my children are in their twenties, and listen to todays music, now and again, they will send me a video with an oldie, saying, mom, you remember this, because they grew up listening to them,as those were the songs i used to play when they were young. They know a lot of oldies but goodies.
Mom you played this song so much when I was growing up. I hated hearing it. It took for me to grow mature and experience life to to truly understand why you kept this song on repeat. Thanks Mom miss you.
Joe Tex was one of the many great singers of the day that I had the pleasure of seeing perform at the Murray the K Shows, in the old Brooklyn Fox theater 1964-66. he was very underrated.
For the next 12 years off & on, Joe left us with a nice string of hits that will never be forgotten. The words in this song are very touching. Reached #5 (for two weeks) 1/30/1965..
I listen to him when I was a teen ager and now at my 75's I listen the same way but with some nostalgical thinking cos some of the group of that golden time had been gone away.😢.
On this day in 1965 {March 3rd} Joe Tex performed "Hold On To What You've Got" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Three months earlier on December 29th, 1964 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #5 and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #2 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart... Joe Tex passed away on August 13th, 1982 at the young age of 47 {heart attack}... R.I.P. Mr. Tex, aka Joseph Arrington, Jr., and Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013}...

It's songs like this that return my memories to Bessemer and attending Dunbar on the North Side and then going to Carver (Bulldogs) before leaving for Chicago in December 1966. Mom and Bobby and Roxanne are gone on home now. Mom even returned to Reform, Alabama and She and my Dad got married and Dad is gone too. GOD BLESS!!!!!!
